@voelker16 I normally start practicing following the actual song. Then if possible I try to add fills, etc. to learn to be more flexible and improve playing. For me this only works for slower songs. For fast songs, I can't improvise.

@3YEARSCLEAN I don't remember the beats. When it comes to metallica, I just know the song after listening to it a few hundred thousand times. So I just play what I feel (seek, orion, lightning, messiah, redemption, etc). For tricky songs (battery, dyers, nightmare, etc), I just play (or try to play) what Lars played (emulate as best I can).

Nice work... I've been playing around with learning this song and it's turning out to be harder than I thought. Did you use written music to learn it or do you play be ear? I think Lars is a more technically competent drummer than people give him credit for. When you listen to his drumming it sounds straight forward and simplistic, but when you really listen in more detail, he does some really clever stuff. Again, nice job!

actually no. the colour is different, and lars has high,mid and 2 floor toms. this guy has one floor tom. and lars has his cymbals in different locations. but otherwise,

hey man good drumming but your doing it wrong... the double bass in the biggining is wrong there too much on the second and forth measures you do it. then after the drum break your forgetting the double bass.
