“Can you imagine what this man could have done if only he’d been loved?” ~ Henry Kissinger Don’t get me wrong; if Nixon or E. Howard Hunt had told to the world all they knew about the real history of their times, the country would have come apart at the seams.
@mrkeno1000 -watergate (and vietnam) may have been disastrous, but Nixon still did lot of good------his foreign policy was brilliant---China, Russia, Middle East, Turkey. No one could conduct foreign policy like him. I still think he deserves a better rating by historians
@keno8spot --prob the most remarkable political comeback in US history. No one wanted to be Pres more than him. He actively campaigned for fellow Republicans in 64 and 66, stayed in the game, and somehow got the Repub nomination in 68
@loyaldude10 Not to equate in terms of intellect, but I always thought if Al Gore had not contested the election results in 2000 (as Nixon hadn't in 1960, even though he had as much of a right to do so) that he probably could have made a Nixonian comeback in 2008.
@thej762000 ---well---it would have taken a likeable Dem that could not be attacked effectively to have beaten a wartime Pres Bush Jr. Public upset when no WMD found, but Bush and his people twisted facts around like a pretzel, and Rove and his ilk ran those Swift Boat ads and Kerry could never get going. Dont think gore could have survived it either. gore should have won in 2000, when Bush was untested and didnt have power of incumbency.
@keno8spot He got elected president 6 years later through sheer hard work and an intelligent political mind. He was a fine lawyer and a very good wit.
Rick Perlstein called Nixon "a serial collector of resentments" --pretty much sums up Nixon's character.
Extra Irony: most GOP tea party folks today would dismiss him as a "RINO."

Nixon was right about one thing, the media has a definite liberal bias. He called them on it and they hated him for it.

The more I watch Nixon's last press conference, the more I love they way he speaks and displays his bitterness.

@keno8spot A very, very close presidential election in 1968 ( and this was a Democratic party that was pancaked from all angles).
