Not only is it demonstrably false, since GDP grew significantly from 1933 to 1937 and was back to its pre-crash high by 1940, but the people who espouse it usually follow up with "World War II got us out of the Depression!" @eline65 Actually the reperations Germany was paying were negligent to their economic woes (they had no money, so they never paid on time, and after Hitler they didn't pay most of it anyway), the major problem was the stupid way they handled the economy (printing money - which led to stupid inflation, another reason why reparations didn't mean much - Germany currency was trash).
