I do ITF TKD, and i think it depends on the martial artist though. although i have to say olympic tkd (WTF) would have a slightly harder time defending themselves because they are so used to leaving their hands down, and their focus is highly on speed. What you practice in your dojo/gym, is most likely what you will use in real life.

20+yrs of practicing, making national team and coaching on all level etc gives some weight to my opinion. Ref don't kick, players do... don't tell me match 0-0 in overtime round is exciting. Even Athen wasn't that great, you need a highlight reel like this one to really appreciate. If it was boring to me, imagine the general audience that know nothing about TKD. Broken arms are common in TKD when blocking kicks. Also, the concept is when your blocking your not countering. Of course you can't counter everything, then again you can't block everything either. Oh and often depending on where the judges are, they will still score a blocked shot

Actually, in an entire tourney, only a few matchs are interesting. Since I've stop competing (was on CAN team) and became an MMA practiotioner/fan, I have a hard time watching TKD. Went to watch Can Nationals when in Mtl 2-3 yrs a go and I ended up staying an hour. I understand of course cause of the tourney format, guys try to save themselves for later matchs but it makes them boring.

TKD are the best leg users hands down. Nobody can touch them in tech. or in power. Thai boxing has some power, but there inventory of kicks are minimal, also there movement is also a factor since they do not move much, easy target to hit. THey depend on power, while TKD sees power as only one aspect to win the fight.

ITF and WTF styles are completely different. Thai boxing would probably have a better fight with ITF because of the usage of hands in their fighting. Not saying either way is better, but ITF throws more punches and lower kicks.

It's a really great sport! I like it! Lots of coordination and speed involved with it. And he's right up there. It's not a real fight. This is a serious competition, but there's a lot of control involved. It's very different from MMA and Thai boxing. However, these guys are fast! I've sparred a second degree black belt before and he was really quick. Mind you that I faced him with MMA style type striking.
