Well I would say that auto cars are the shit, I can bang gears all day in a t-56, but autos get the job done when it comes to drag racing. My A4 Z28 is a beast when it's time to bust some ass it's all really on preference to be quite honest, just hope you can rail some gears if your in a 5 or 6 speed!! And ls1's only came in A-4 or M6
Beefcake I call bullshit! No such thing as a 2002 ws6 with a 5 speed! The ws6 package only came optional on v8 models, which only come with T56 6 speeds if u got the manual option!
@XxMotleyMattXx NOT REALLY IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE DRIVER ....... A BUILT T56 AND A GOOD DRIVER WOULDNT GET OUTSHIFTED BY A SILLY AUTOMATIC 6 SPEED IS THE WAY TO GO...........
@383EROCK On the street, your right. In a 1/4. The auto is better. A built auto will launch and shift WAY faster than you can smash the clutch, shift and pop the clutch.
All the new autos are electronically controlled and tunable. With an aggressive tune the shifts are virtually instant. You CAN NOT outshift a modern electronically controlled automatic performance car made in the last 15 years. It's humanly impossible. Even the most experienced drives in manual cars lose time due to the shifts. They hate the automatics when drag racing. You get excuses like "every time I shift you just pull away", even if their shifts are very fast.
I agree that a performance built automatic will out perform a manual. However, stock manual gearboxes hold up a lot better than stock automatic gearboxes. So for someone who doesnt have a whole lot of cash, go with the manual gearbox.
I have an automatic 05 GTO and I've smoked tuned up mustang's and camaros at the tracks automatic is way more consistent most "hard asses " that drive manual and think they are unbeatable usually can't shift for there life with a manual at the right time
for drag racing auto's ftw faster shifting and a lot more consistent i have a 94 trans am gt lt1 pretty much stock and stock 4l60e and when i push the trans performance button it shifts hard and quick for stock
the automatics are actually faster than the 6 speeds unless you are a sick driver. BUT the fact of shifting through gears while doing it is the fun part
*To the people defending automatics on here... THANK YOU! Sadly most people assume automatics are worse than manuals. In stock form, most likely the auto is worse, and for circuit racing, yea they're worse. But for drag, built auto's completely outperform manuals 10/10 times. I only chose manual because it's much more fun to drive on the street and I'd like to get decent gas lol. 4500 stall and a shift kit isn't exactly economical enough for me right now haha.
i cant believe it ya im young im 24 but when i was growing up workin on cars i was raised believin automatics couldnt handle the power that a stick could has things change that much? ive always worked on old ass cars so im new to these cars plz message me if u can answer
@viper12988 Autos can hold as much power as they're built for; Same goes for standards. You're not going to throw 500ft/lbs of torque down a transmission that is designed for 350.
@raditz5 i was going to come up with a witty response basically restating that you will never consistently beat a auto car on the track with the right supporting mods..but then i realized you said you owned a mustang. you insulted yourself on that one, gtfo
The 4l60e is only good when stalled with new rear gears after that its a beast , but a stock auto ls1 will not beat a stock manual ls1 with proper shifting. Auto's give up a bit of power and the stock gearing is horrible. Terrible gearing
If u wanna go fast, u get an automatic, u wanna have fun, get a manual. Simple as that. Only reason I say that is because an automatic shifts faster than we do.
@thegagededor i've won alot of races driving a standard as well. as far as alot of street cars go i would probably choose standard over automatic. i'm simply proving a point that auto is nothing to mark down to a "pussy that can't drive", as alot of these kids think they could hit a perfect shift point every gear every time with over 400hp.
@trmn8r18 Ignorance is bliss. I love driving sticks, it's fun, but if I had a choice for a race car, it would be an automatic. Anyone with real experience will tell you the same, kid.
@XITroll13 You hit the nail on the head brother. Everyone here defending manual transmissions has the thought of a "stock automatic transmission" on the mind... once an automatic is built up, FASTER shifting, STRONGER shifting, end of story.
@DZydrunasC Exactly. The people that always talk shit are the ones that have never put their asses in a vehicle with a race prepped automatic. Hell, not even a race ready trans, just one with a shift kit and a decent stall. They drive their moms automatic minivan and assume that's what it's like.
@XITroll13 You're telling me you'd drive an automatic rally car? Or anything SCCA spec with an auto trans? The only thing automatic is good for is drag racing. It doesn't apply anywhere else in the real world of racing where you need to be in control of your engine more than just flooring it for a few seconds then braking.
@240sr20drift No, sorry. I meant to say for a drag car. For autocross, rally, road courses and spirited "street" curvy course I prefer a manual all day, so you can control the power better. "The real world of racing", Are you saying that drag racing isn't real racing? Next thing you're gonna say is that drifting is more real racing than drag racing.
@XITroll13 No the fuck they wont? Why do you think ever single actually RACE car has a manual transmission. Do some research before you talk about something you don't know.
@KeepItRoostin658 Shut up stupid. Maybe you should be doing the research. Race prepped automatics eat manuals all day long on at the drag strip as far as shifting speed is concerned. Manuals are good for road courses and rally cars. I've been racing my cars for 20 years. I've had manuals and automatics and a good automatic is always better than a good manual for drag racing.
@KeepItRoostin658 Yea, that must be it. Why don't you read all of the other comments about autos and manuals all over this page? You watched too much Fast and Furious kid.
@beefcake3131 The discussion isn't about a higher HP manual not being able to beat an automatic, it's about shifting speed versus the two. I have no doubt that you are beating automatics in a race. A decent automatic setup will shift faster without having to get out of the power to shift the gear like in a manual, period. Increased line pressure and torque management delete in an auto is going to out shift any manual 100% of the time.
There are a lot of mediocre race cars that are manual. Modern top of the line race and road cars, including Forumla 1 cars, are all some form of electronically controlled automatic or semi-automatic transmission. Meaning no clutch pedal to hit. Formula 1 hasn't been manual in a couple of decades.
everytime that clutch gets ingaged u lose a tenth of a second or less or more well unless you power shift without using the clutch then u must have big bucks shifting like a ass hole
@Tylerhesh just another prepubescent teenager that knows absolutely nothing about what he is talking about, and has no facts to back up his argument. i've stated my case in the comments below. if you have the mental capacity to read it, please feel free.
The fact remains that nearly all cars (that i've seen or built) that run faster than an 11 have had an automatic. Don't forget about the 2spd powerglides.. Or even the Automatic trannys with a manual valve body that don't have a clutch pedal. Thats not a traditional "bang in gear", but rather a gear lever (Just like almost every automatic i've ever seen has).
@MXJohnHMX1: You will never be able to shift faster than a properly prepared automatic. If your talking a stock TQ conv., sure, of course. Lets stick a shift kit, new valvebody, and a more durable tq converter in and see if you can shift fast enough then. Even then, a stock tq. conv. will in most cases hold its own power. better than your clutch will if you add power. Case in point: ls2 m6 GTO. Launch it a few times and see if you aren't begging for a ls7 clutch
Even with my LS7 clutch I still run into heat issues once in a while. Prob doesn't help that I have an Aluminum flywheel. I would go with a Monster Clutch before going back to a LS7 clutch again. Same price range and holds over 200hp more. Agreed on a Stalled Auto car. They can get out of the hole hard and depending how you have the stall set up for boost or N20 to N/A can be very dependable. And you can't out shift an auto.
@sonataroger if you think skill is redlining it, you obviously suck ass at driving. knowing your car and what it can do/can do well is skill. not getting in it and letting it bounce off the limiter. and who said autos don't go to redline?
Keep in mind that i'm not hating on manuals, ladies. I've driven stick cars all of my life. But I respect a car with an automatic, and that will be my first choice on any car i intend to drag. To the guy that said a clutch in a manual tranny will never slip, you obviously have never made any real power or you've driven n/a civics all of your life. If your putting down high numbers you risk it slipping no matter what kind of tranny.
Agreed, I drive a M6 and i love it because I have more control of the shift points and just how I drive in general. Don't get me wrong autos are good off the line, but once I get first gear planted its pretty equal in performance of both. The fun factor is what its all about. Still no reason to hate on a Camaro. Atleast hes not driving a slow ass mustang.
Autos win races if you suck ass at driving. It is a fact that if you can drive a stick the right way, you will beat the same exact car if it's an auto vs. stick. Redline it.
in alot of cases autos are faster, it eliminates the possibility of human error quite a bit. i was always told manuals are to impress high school girls, autos win races.
@jdmfreak92 is not about the car,is the driver.I own a 1995 camaro n it can go around turns pretty well.hell u can even drift with them.there's a lot of american cars that can drift.don't u watch formula d?
@mustangjustin01 Although I do agree with you when it comes to torque playing a factor in drifting, but if that was the only thing that mattered, why don't more American cars drift? It's not all about power as much as it is about suspension geometry and the chassis of the car. I've never seen a camaro dominate a track event, sorry. If you have prove my ignorance and show me.
There's plenty of "Americain" Cars in the professional Drift series. There has been more and more since those series have matured simply because the V-8 cars rarely have any engine related hicups, most of them are N/A so the throttle response is spot on and the torque makes it easy to just leave it in one gear the entire go-round. Samuel Hubinette during an interview stated that he would shift 2-3 times in the 2008 season during a tandem match, which allowed him to concentrate...
Now I understand that in D1 and Drift Aus they run mainly 4 and 6 cyl. But as things become more competitive and the Jap V-8s become more commonplace there will be a convergence over to the big displacement engines. Sadly.
@SpecialKLSX I said car, not engine. Don't get me wrong I love american engines and some american cars. Especially 240s with ls motors in them. All that weight in the front and nothing in the back makes them so easy to get sideways. I'm just not too fond of camaros, but hey everyone has their own opinion. I just hate when people don't even give the car a chance because it's not AMERICANNNN. Know what I mean?
@jdmfreak92 INdeed know exactly what you mean. However American cars have it just as hard as Imports of any variety because of the notion that they cannot handle to save their life even though said cars are very competitive on circuit races in series where your not allowed to do extensive suspension/brake/aero modifications.
@mustangjustin01 we are americans we build cars the way we like them wich means for a straight line most of the time drifting is somthing we like to do in the grocery parking lot around here lol that dont mean we are better or that you yall are better that just means we have diffent ways of fun we like the heart pumping adrenalin rush lol now i cant stand auto cars that takes the fun out of everthing. im not hating on imports i like them to my fav is a supra
@mustangjustin01 Who do you think invented drifting you idiot... Learn to spell and learn your shit. Drifting only started coming to America a few years back
@lowerdragoon ok sorry about the spelling its my damn computer not me.... oh and for your commet the drifting series has not been here but for a few years yes but drifting has been around for way longer then i have just for fun though and i was not even taking to you so plz go fined that poctet rocket honda you use to own and shove it up your ass and mine your on damn business.
@mustangjustin01 Lol maybe i was a little to harsh when i typed that. But its true drifting has only started here a few years back. And for your info, i don't Drive a pocket Honda..
Girls in general is a good thing. Besides if you street your car its better to have a Manual Trans. It is understandable if you only drag your car to have an auto.
@mtwut Dude, you are, Dehydrated-rock-hard stupid. Stupid so stupid that it goes way beyond the stupid we know into a whole different dimension of stupid. You are
trans-stupid stupid. Meta-stupid. Stupid collapsed on itself so far that even the neutrons have collapsed. Stupid gotten so dense that no intellect can escape. Singularity stupid. You emit more stupid in one second than our entire galaxy emits in a year.
@mtwut Continued....Perhaps this is some primordial fragment from the original big bang of stupid. Some pure essence of a stupid so uncontaminated by anything else as to be beyond the laws of physics that we know.
@mtwut Dehydrated-rock-hard stupid. Stupid so stupid that it goes way beyond

trans-stupid stupid. Meta-stupid. Stupid collapsed on itself so far that even the neutrons have collapsed. Stupid gotten so dense that no intellect can escape. Singularity stupid. You emit more stupid in one second than our entire galaxy emits in a year. Nothing in our universe can really be this stupid.
@mtwut autos are for people who cant shift or shift fast enough to beat automatics, especially because all cars that have automatics have torque converters and ALWAYS slip =less power to wheels
@LetsPlayCel Thats the stupidest thing I ever heard. I don't care how long you've been driving manual, you're still gonna screw up a shift here and there, because human error never goes away, you are human after all.
@TheGagededor If you're gonna sit there and say that you have never missed a gear, then you're a liar. I've driven sticks for about 20 years, so, I'm pretty good at it, but I've missed MANY shifts. It happens and it will cost you the race, usually, and a loss is a loss even if you missed your shift.
@mtwut I have a 6 speed manual in my new Mustang because it's fun. I have always thought sticks were fun. Stop grouping everyone together. Does it impress high school girls? Shit I been missin out. Sounds more like you wish your automatic was a manual. Am I rite? I think I am.
@relentless4g63t maybe, maybe not. I just sold my 400hp(crank. about 320whp) 14b awd Talon and bought a Firebird bone stock. The talon was definitely faster(the instant torque on the T/A is amazing though) and I do miss awd a little, but I was not looking forward to breaking trannies with more power. Cant wait to run 15psi on the LT1 with some water/meth injection :D
Opti-Spark is your best friend. Better do the MSD before your water pump leaks all over the distributor. Just saying. Anything can be built. A LS engine would have been a better start. Good Luck!
@98DemonZ28 Already been through the dist. Thanks for the advice. I'm a DIY kinda guy and would not have the extra $2-3000 that an LS car would've costed($4-6k all around my area) for a pretty long time. Rather spend it on my turbo setup. Best of luck to you too.
@wootman223 the camaro is the one you see in the video dude. and im pretty sure they teach children the difference between "an" and "and" long before they teach computer skills
I kinda dig the fishtail wing, altough it is kinda big for that car and not like he's running over 190mph on a road course at leguna Seca but hell.. Looks good
@xarnoldx10 Well, I'm not sure if you've ever raced before (even just for fun on a track) but automatic is the most consistent for 1/4m ET's. If it was heads up, I could understand having a manual.
@19010938409 Doubt it.. 4 different types of materials used to make body kits... and there isn't really an easy way to tell what material it is unless he takes it off and flexes it or you painted it. So this kit could very well be lighter than stock. Yes the wing may be more drag, but its more downforce also.... camaros were always bland to me..I'd lose the spoiler as its a little much, but the kit is fine

The fact remains that nearly all cars (that i've seen or built) that run faster than an 11 have had an automatic. Don't forget about the 2spd powerglides.. Or even the Automatic trannys with a manual valve body that don't have a clutch pedal. Thats not a traditional "bang in gear", but rather a gear lever (Just like almost every automatic i've ever seen has).
mtwut 3 months ago
@MXJohnHMX1: You will never be able to shift faster than a properly prepared automatic. If your talking a stock TQ conv., sure, of course. Lets stick a shift kit, new valvebody, and a more durable tq converter in and see if you can shift fast enough then. Even then, a stock tq. conv. will in most cases hold its own power. better than your clutch will if you add power. Case in point: ls2 m6 GTO. Launch it a few times and see if you aren't begging for a ls7 clutch
mtwut 3 months ago
@mtwut
98DemonZ28 3 months ago 9
@bossmanltdan what car? gto im assuming? if so sweet ride, as a street car i would definitely like that car as a manual.
mtwut 3 months ago
@1337shellc0der: you drive a mustang, gtfo.
mtwut 3 months ago
@sonataroger if you think skill is redlining it, you obviously suck ass at driving. knowing your car and what it can do/can do well is skill. not getting in it and letting it bounce off the limiter. and who said autos don't go to redline?
mtwut 3 months ago
Keep in mind that i'm not hating on manuals, ladies. I've driven stick cars all of my life. But I respect a car with an automatic, and that will be my first choice on any car i intend to drag. To the guy that said a clutch in a manual tranny will never slip, you obviously have never made any real power or you've driven n/a civics all of your life. If your putting down high numbers you risk it slipping no matter what kind of tranny.
mtwut 3 months ago
Agreed, I drive a M6 and i love it because I have more control of the shift points and just how I drive in general. Don't get me wrong autos are good off the line, but once I get first gear planted its pretty equal in performance of both. The fun factor is what its all about. Still no reason to hate on a Camaro. Atleast hes not driving a slow ass mustang.
bossmanltdan 3 months ago
that spoiler is hideous.
hocka09 3 months ago
That camaro sounds freakin amazing.
wolfdog1987 3 months ago
Autos win races if you suck ass at driving. It is a fact that if you can drive a stick the right way, you will beat the same exact car if it's an auto vs. stick. Redline it.
sonataroger 3 months ago
I'm sorry, but an auto takes all the fun out of driving.

LOL AUTOMATICS ARE FOR FAGGOTS
1337shellc0der 3 months ago
Its tru if you take 2 cars no matter what kind just as long as there both evenly match the auto will win every time stick is funner to drive though

@mtwut Haha, Youtube is not only in America man.....
jdmfreak92 3 months ago
in alot of cases autos are faster, it eliminates the possibility of human error quite a bit. i was always told manuals are to impress high school girls, autos win races.
mtwut 3 months ago 33
@mtwut races in a straight line, not that a camaro would be going around turns anyway.
jdmfreak92 3 months ago
@jdmfreak92 is not about the car,is the driver.I own a 1995 camaro n it can go around turns pretty well.hell u can even drift with them.there's a lot of american cars that can drift.don't u watch formula d?
FearCarlos 3 months ago
@FearCarlos I'm sorry, I've never seen a camaro in any sort of drifting competition.
jdmfreak92 3 months ago
@jdmfreak92 camaros are great track cars to and difting is all about tq with is something imports no nothing about
mustangjustin01 3 months ago
@mustangjustin01 Although I do agree with you when it comes to torque playing a factor in drifting, but if that was the only thing that mattered, why don't more American cars drift? It's not all about power as much as it is about suspension geometry and the chassis of the car. I've never seen a camaro dominate a track event, sorry. If you have prove my ignorance and show me.
jdmfreak92 3 months ago
@jdmfreak92
SpecialKLSX 3 months ago
... On driving.
More to the case is that you have this roster of the top 32 of Formula D Long Beach 2011.
Conrad Grunewald 2010 Hankook Camaro SS
Toshiki Yoshioka Nissan 240LS, Retaks :Engine - 418 Stroked, Supercharged LS2
Chris Forsberg 2011 NOS Energy Drink Nissan 370Z (Odd man out) Nissan Motorsports 5.6L Titan V8 Engine
Tyler McQuarrie 2008 Nissan 350z Engine - 6.7L V8 (LS series it sounded like)
Matt Powers Team Need for Speed Nitto Tires Nissan S14 Engine - Ls7
...ECT!
SpecialKLSX 3 months ago
@jdmfreak92
Not to wall of text you man but it's honestly that anyone who doesn't run some sort of big american V-8 in their car is odd man out.
formulad dot com/schedule/results/long-beach-results-2011.php
Now I understand that in D1 and Drift Aus they run mainly 4 and 6 cyl. But as things become more competitive and the Jap V-8s become more commonplace there will be a convergence over to the big displacement engines. Sadly.
SpecialKLSX 3 months ago
@SpecialKLSX I said car, not engine. Don't get me wrong I love american engines and some american cars. Especially 240s with ls motors in them. All that weight in the front and nothing in the back makes them so easy to get sideways. I'm just not too fond of camaros, but hey everyone has their own opinion. I just hate when people don't even give the car a chance because it's not AMERICANNNN. Know what I mean?
jdmfreak92 3 months ago
@jdmfreak92 INdeed know exactly what you mean. However American cars have it just as hard as Imports of any variety because of the notion that they cannot handle to save their life even though said cars are very competitive on circuit races in series where your not allowed to do extensive suspension/brake/aero modifications.
SpecialKLSX 3 months ago
@SpecialKLSX Hahaha, true that man.

@mtwut exactly why the 1500hp cars are automatic and only have 2 gears... i drive auto and a manual so i dont complain lol
TheCooperBeatz 3 months ago
@mtwut it depends on the car but ether way manuals are more fun and racing a automatic is kinda boring
codizel123 3 months ago
@mtwut except when you have a manual that you know how to drive and they the clutches will never slip like in an auto due to a non built auto.

@mtwut autos are for people who cant shift or shift fast enough to beat automatics, especially because all cars that have automatics have torque converters and ALWAYS slip =less power to wheels

@mtwut
If you still have human error when you drive a manual. You shouldn't be driving a manual.
LetsPlayCel 3 months ago
@LetsPlayCel Thats the stupidest thing I ever heard. I don't care how long you've been driving manual, you're still gonna screw up a shift here and there, because human error never goes away, you are human after all.

TheGagededor 3 months ago
@TheGagededor If you're gonna sit there and say that you have never missed a gear, then you're a liar. I've driven sticks for about 20 years, so, I'm pretty good at it, but I've missed MANY shifts. It happens and it will cost you the race, usually, and a loss is a loss even if you missed your shift.
XITroll13 2 months ago

Good Luck!
98DemonZ28 3 months ago
@98DemonZ28 Already been through the dist. Thanks for the advice. I'm a DIY kinda guy and would not have the extra $2-3000 that an LS car would've costed($4-6k all around my area) for a pretty long time. Rather spend it on my turbo setup. Best of luck to you too.
