I bet this stuff will show up in Mercedes and Cadillac headlights and taillights before long. Hopefully they won't be blindingly bright like those stupid LED and HID lights.
ideas are nice for sure but so expensive they will never be anything more than concepts or prototypes, i just wish tv's and monitors were on the market.
@stigyo92 OLED is cheaper than LED since all it is is plastic that lights up they have had this technology for like 50 years they just didnt know how to manipulate the lighting
@cavmanier try again. OLED based screens are allready popular in cellphones. The next pkaystation portable will used OLED screens. If complex screens are possible, why not just simple lights ?
I was just talking to my friend about this tech. I wonder about making entire walls out of (maybe this) a substance that could change color but be able to maintain color with or without being lit and/or powered
@drumslayer27 they would still need some kind of chip for info and battery for power, I would hate for a battery to explode in your eye. maybe solar contacts? WiFi to computer to change the contacts color or style? maybe in way way way future.
whoa i just had an AWESOME idea.....how about we do this for the lighting on walls but with a switch to change the lights into a tv then back to a light
I am not so sure about this if the thing lasts a couple year it might be all worth it. But you can probably make it change its color tuned to the users mood. I bet that's not cheap either but how does that save you $
I am not sure about that. LED last long life but OLED may not last as long. That word Organic used on OLED is really a marketing term. There is nothing organic about how its made. It just means its variable in anycolor on light emitting diode unlike LED that has fixed color.
No no its really an organic diode its not marketing term. It got its strong and weak spots over common LED. Its a long story how OLED was born, Kodak started the research about Organic Eletro-Luminescence in 1980 So the technology was originally called OEL. OLED is also part of a new generation of organic electronics. There's also a project about an Organic Chip using the organic diode technology. The only thing I'm not sure is if it makes a good lightening. Well lets see.
they say it lasts 3-5years, but this technology is young still, not before long will it last atleast 10years, and i wouldn't even mind a 5year lifespan. if they can get the price down so you don't have to spend thousands for a 11inch screen, i wouldn't mind.
Well I would not say that. I mean, look how the computer technology changes. I think its not a matter of technology, its more a matter of marketing to make people pay for this stuff.
But ist OLED invisible when its tourned out, or white ?
@billybobjoe198 1000 hours blue phosper looses 12% brightness red & green around 8%. This means the light will start to appear yellow over time, but will outlive old fassion light bulbs. I would not yet invest in a TV.
I still like the traditional incandescence light bulb and candles. I like the old ways of lightning stuff. And I think oled lighning is not bright enough.
the first LCD displays werent bright either, jjust wait a few years and it'll be fantastic. low energy consumption, low heat production, 'green', thin and easy to use...
You should also talk about the lighting that it is not only no glare but its more natural then led, and by the way you never mentioned LEDS which give a very glarey light (depending on package).
Granted, diffuse lighting is cool. But I want my wall to be a DISPLAY. Hahaha! In fact, what I really want is to replace the combination projector+screen by a new screen only. I don't think any projector could compete to an OLED screen in contrast or brightness or saturation.
@ForceDestroyer correct but you cant resize a oled screen.projectors can project on large contoured surfaces without any setup, like projecting on trees also OLEDS will be very very usefull for projectors themselves since they can be formed with ito, a clear conducter and the projector can go right through it, maintaining the contrast and brightness.
the main dificulty in projectors is that the higher the resolution, the higher ammount of light you need to push through the screen oleds fix that
I can imagine a very very huge building with OLED panels , a bed lamp for the whole city. A whole pavements of light. IMpressive...Mass production of the polymer (PLASTIC) in CHINA. alternative to toxic mercury is the tagline of GE.
BUT Is this biodegradable. Is lifespan very long enough to limit minimal usage.
Is the particulate polymer toxic to lungs or brain. (health & safety ?!!!)
What are the disposable strategies to avoid hazardous pollution...
Who in the world wants white OLED light for a wallpaper. Make it an OLED display, morons or better make it a HoloVizio screen... and cheap also. I'm waiting..
no but realy oled on TOP of tile flooring would be cool or oled wall paper have a blue wall one day and have a wall with video footage of a beach another day
Walls will be a source of light and display tvs.You can change the look of you room to anything you wish for.How about a tropical island with some cool sound.
GE actualy came up with the first LED I believe theres some website where some one has a LED museum its pretty cool stuff seeing how fast it has progressed even if OLED's isn't there invention its incredible, whatever next.
hmmm yes oled is impressive but still ahve u even seen the design of the plasma lightbulb it is the size of a tic-tac and can produce more light than the oled but still ingenious design
The potential in how OLED can be applied to surfaces is its advantage. The stuff can be applied via "ink-jet-like" printer to any surface you want making it as flexible and durable as you want.
dont get me wrong though, im not rippin on you or the plasma light bulb; that little thing is amazing and I think they are both going to be used in modern lighting.
You can learn more about GE's OLED technology by visiting the Global Research Center blog (see my profile for a link). The work we have been doing has the potential to be really game changing and is definitely something to keep an eye on!
@grcblog Well.. Many companies are actually working on this type of lighting, it's a natural progression in lighting, making lights of the most efficient source invented so far. Props on the big OLED christmas tree though, pretty cool.
Buy PANL Stock, they are at the forefront of OLED, the company is called Universal Display the stock symbol is PANL

The OLED is kind of an evolution from LED, They're very similar, but OLED is Organic!!, in other words: cheaper, stronger and Green.
it also uses less energy than common LEDs. So not only cheaper in production it also is economic.

? I disagree with you for now. Like I said there are nothing organic about OLED except it saves energy and you might even say its all greener but...
