The added value of physical danger is questionable (it's harder to gain experience when injuries are more likely to be severe). On the other hand, back then the danger wasn't just physical to the driver. The cars were running on the limits of reliability and races were long and at the upper limit of driver endurance. Finishing was something you could be proud of. That ragged-edge racing, IMHO, is what made for the romance and excitement above all else. But that could just be me.
He sure resembles Shewmacher, perhaps he returned to finish what he'd started. Racing was so deadly back then, so many died in their prime, it was so sad. There was a romance about racing that is somehow lacking these days though, it's just the times I suspect. TV didn't exist for most when these races were going on and life wasn't so diluted with extravaganza. I remember listening ot the Indy 500 on radio, how it'd make my hair stand on end when they said Gentlemen Start Your Engines.
Von Trips had a invitation to visit friends for the same day. The plane crashed everbody dead. I am not a person who believes in wonders or something like that, but it's strange: one day an two possibilities to die.
He would have deserved the 1961 chanpionship more than Phil Hill. Enzo Ferrari in one of his book remembered Taffy as one of his favourite drivers both for his ability either for his deep humanity . Surely he would have written a different palmares. In Monza a "stele" remember him and the poor 11 people involved in the crash. Somewhere i red about a part of responsabiity for Jim Clark, but it's difficult to say...
Stefan Bellof was the best german driver after Schumacher. von Trips,as well as Phil Hill, were sitting in the superior Ferrari 156,which made easy work of the Lotus',Coopers and Porsches. Stirling Moss' win in Monaco in 1961 was brilliant as was his win in Nurburgring. He was driving an inferior underpowered Lotus 18...
Would von Trips taken the 1961 title had he lived? Who knows. Some say Phil Hill would have won in anyway since he knew Watkins Glen better.
True, and that killed him. But he still holds the overall lap record at the Nurburgring after all these years,so he was very quick. Some even say he would have won in Monaco in 1984,had not the race been stopped because of rain.
Monaco '84, everyone talks about Senna's brilliant drive in the wet, but watching it at the time it was Bellof's drive in the Tyrell that had me spellbound! I reckon he could have won that race if it hadn't been stopped early!
Stefan Bellow was a gifted driver - no doubt about that. And he was quick - sometimes too quick. Other drivers have the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and become even better drivers. Unfortunately it wasn`t Stefan`s faith.
Senna will always be a legend. And rightly so. Ayrton didn`t deserve his fate like Stefan or Wolfgang or the spectators that were killed in 1961. RIP.
@fzr2 there's an unwritten law of internet comments that anywhere Senna's death is mentioned someone must chime in with "yeah but nobody remembers Ratzenberger" and anywhere Senna's 84 Monaco drive is mentioned somebody has to pipe up about Bellof
@fzr2 for sure ..a wasted talent...but with all respect...the tyrrell cars were much more than a toleman.... they re champions in the past ..and the tolemans were nothing....
Thanks for the vid. Wouldn't Wolfgang von Trips be equal to Michael Schumacher when he won the first German world championship in f-1 and maybe some more?
The belief that Wolfgang von Trips would not have been spared from his fate, when a plane he was scheduled to fly to the USA crashed over Scotland, is an urban myth...
I thought it was Southern Ireland. If you believe George Anderson, we agree to go only so far and this man had "two chances to die and none to survive" on September 10, 1961.
oh boo hoo- if they didn't like it they shoulda switched to golf.
