Good video. But I saw a few faults. I mean the power low kick looks pretty ineffective when you leave your leg out there to be grabbed, you dont need to leave it out there for more power; the impact is enough to shock the leg. Getting hit like that when leg jaming is not good for your bones. Also when the guys kick they dropped their hands up open for an interception to the upper body. I really liked the moving away one though, I would only leg jam if I really needed too.
Excellent video, and Sugarfoot Cunningham always lends a touch of class and experience to anything. You must have something going on if he was there...nice job and thank you for posting this.
Why do you almost never see this in MMA? Leg kicks are like 40% of a Muay Thai strikers arsenal. Defending against leg kicks should be one of the most common drills shouldn't it? :P
@stinkypete14 yep ^ ^ and i know a guy that used to be in one... now he runs a thai restruant not too far from my house, he teaches me muay thai sometimes :P
'Amateurs' why say that ? these guys are bloody brilliant, yea so what he dropped his guard i spose when your 7 times undefeated champion you can do what the hell you want even if it means dropping your guard :) only if your new like me you cant afford to drop your guard and be defensive you have to be right in there ! ya know ?
@jamescourt1000 It's funny. He won the "world title" (he has never fought anyone near the top of the Kickboxing/Muay Thai world) 7 times, yet never got defeated. How the hell do you win the same belt 7 times if you never lose?
@ralph3nuis are you retarded? being on youtube shows you are able to use the internet; why dont you google some of Peter Cunningham's fights to see for yourself.
@hondaonly I've seen them, he only fought no-names. Where's Rob Kaman, Peter Aerts, Ernesto Hoost, Frank Lobman, Jan Oosterbaan, Ramon Dekkers, Peter Smit, etc.
@ralph3nuis hmmm all of the names except for Dekkers was in Peter's weight class. Are u sure u know whats up in the sport or are u just throwing names out there? Peter fought Dida and played with him the 2 times they fought. Yes, I agree, a fight with Dekkers would have been great but unfortunately this game is also a business and that fight never happened. It would be great if Sanchai would fight Anuwat too but that too has politics involved.
@hondaonly His biggest fight was against Dida Diafat, which ended in a draw. Dida Diafat got his ass kicked by Ramon Dekkers twice. Don't get me wrong I respect Pete for what he's done for the sport in North-America, but saying he's a world champion or one of the best ever is just a joke.
this is a lot different than the shield i learned. in the shield i learned, you bring both hands up and put them on your head with your elbows facing outwards to protect against the clinch
this is a very risky blockingtechnique there is way too much space between knee and elbow wihle blocking if he fakes the low kick the rips are open ;)
Thanks for this vid. Also thanks for going into detail of the parts being used etc.
I remember one time I had an instructor that wouldn't teach me this tech but she said she wanted me to figure it out, and she going to kick me till I did. I have a high tolerance of pain. I did the backing away thing, that pissed her off so she came with a kick to the mid, I blocked it with my shin. She asked me why I could block that but not the low I said. "cause someone showed me".
@AKITA26 Amatuers ???? ha ... he is only a 7 time world champion my friend ... if you can do better, please contact us so we can set up a live youtube viewing ... LOL :)
@hondaonly World champion in what? Who has he fought? The guy is right, that's wrong technique. He's always welcome to come train with us in Holland though.
In the other video on leg kicks it shows you counter kicking with the same leg you checked with but in this demonstration you're countering with the opposite leg you checked with... does it matter which leg you counter with after you check a kick?
although I am no "expert", I suggest trying to avoid EVER letting someone kick your kneecap...... It does hurt the kicker's shin, but the pain caused to the knee is severe, long lasting, and can result in serious knee injuries. It happens in sparring, but to advocate it...... Just dangerous.
Hi i've been doing muay thai on and off for a couple months now av tryd my best to make classes but not had the money to pay for fees is there anything i can do at home that would improve my fighting technique.I'd love to become a professional fighter but i dont have the financial situation to afford lessons .
@zakkloves Im sorry, just curious ... what exactly defines an expert in your opinion? Peter Cunningham is a 7 time undefeated world champion (50 fights). Shawn Yacoubian 15 fights) was ranked within the top 10 muay thai contenders & Rick O' Kane (30 fights) a former champion. Please do your homework before commenting such absurdity.
@zakkloves Hi zacluvss, this video was meant for the novice and is just the beginning part of a 5 minute demo. I mentioned your comment to Shawn and he would love for you to come by so he can show you what a real champ moves like. Please pm us your contact info and I would be glad to put you in touch with these fighters :)
@hondaonly LOL i bet he didn't send u that contact information did he, lol. he seems a little off tho, i mean with the check of balance wen he steps in for the counter low kick if you gona com in tht much towrds ur oponent i wudn't sugest such a dramatic swinging the right arm, you'd eat a counter right or left from someone who knows what they're doing. obviously i'm no man to critique the great sugarfoot though but you should be aware of that in a video trying to teach others proper technique.
@ephasm yes, Peter has fought in Paris, Australia, Mexico, Canada & England. Shawn has fought in Canada & Guatemala. Rick has fought in England from my recollection

only problem with pulling away is that if you dont pull away far enough, you'll get kicked hard with both of your legs straight, which isnt good.

@matklstrength ha ha .. yeah .. happens. .. thats why you need to choose which defense to do when a kick is coming your way

far too many fighter never ever develope the ability to move in and knee cap block the incomming kicks or knees ..
however every single thailand fighter almost always knee cap blocks and re-attacks and quickly ..
