She was great and she knew it, but she was humble and down-to earth. She was a legend in her own time and she also knew it, but she was sincere and straightforward. She was beautiful talented, elegant and polite. She was a conservative, that's why when she passed away the liberal Hollywood and the media didn't mention it much. She lived a very special moment in history and played what the era demanded of her to the top. God Bless Her!!!!
Wow, Lena has such class and humbleness, that is so lacking with the stars today. Stars today "Know Their Great" and they love looking at themselves. She didn't like her voice, but I think that's what made her work so hard. She has a great, one of a kind voice, I don't want her to sound like Aretha, Ella, or Billie, all of them are great, but she had her own style that was lovely, no one can sound like her, in her day singers had their own style, unlike today, these girl singers sound alike.
Her last television appearance on one of my favorite television shows when I was growing up. I think I remember watching this very episode. I wish Rosie had a show like this now. This show had common respect, family oriented, and a good dose of non antidepressive positivity to it.
Lena was one classy lady!!! An excellent role model for women and young girls of any race! God bless you Lena!!! You helped make our society and world a better place for your having been here!!! R.I.P.
She was such a very impressive woman, and so generous and considerate. She had so many sides to her. There was even a very rigid side of her that was shown in the 1960s, as activist. The Lord really blessed the world with a glamorous figure that was Lena Horne. My sympathies to Gail Buckley her daughter and granddaughters Amy and Jenny. God Bless.
@erc355 Lena was at NY Presbyterian Hospital when she died. Someone said that she was being treated for another illness then had a heart attack. They think she had a DNR and was not kept alive by extraordinary means.
She's got a great dry humour! I am an obsessive Billie Holiday fan and I think Lena More than did that Billie song justice. R.I.P. Miss Horne...Her and Billie are probable having a great big jam session in the sky right now!
In 1981 I took my grandmother's sister to see Ms. Horne's one woman show 3rd row seats at the "GoldenGate" theatre on market street in downtown San Francisco.I had always knew she was significant to black culture and music thru out the years.
We never know until it is too late how our life choices affect that of our children. I will never forget the sadness I saw in her son's face. I worked with him for about a year -- he always talked about his mother and how he left him. I am sure, she did not know how much that hurt him. Although she may not necessarily be the blame --- she did leave him.
Although I so love Ms. Lena, I cannot help but wonder how she felt about her son.
@yurherenow - we all get old (God willing). How about we respect older people. They might be slower and not as well as they were when they were younger, but many did so much so that we could have a better life. Show some respect!
In 1967, I worked with her son. He told me that when his mother divorced his father (Jones) she left him with the father and she took the daughter. I thought that was just terrible. I was so sad to read he had died in 1971. He looked just like his mother.
There have been rumors forever that Lena's then husband was not his real father. But since her ex-husband, his "father" raised him, she shouldn't get the blame for his fate, not Lena. Her ex did not want the daughter who looks just like him.
That's sad having to leave his mother at a young age. Did they meet after he grew up, if you have read anything mentioning that? I guess his drug problem is attributed to a broken childhood. R.I.P. Lena Horne, I hadn't heard about her until just now I read about her death on a news site. Her stunning beauty in this black-and-white photograph promoted me to google up.
you can really sense her disdain for hollywood in this video and it's very understandable. she was signed to MGM thinking that she would become a star like her contemporaries (betty grable, rita hayworth, june allyson) and was relegated to just singing roles that could easily be cut out of films. sad she only did 2 actual roles. she would've been good in pinky and show boat.
MGM tried and tried to get roles for her and couldn't because of the times and lack of financing, it's all in the James Gavin bio of Lena. It wasn't going to happen in the 1940s.
Yeah I know. I'm reading it now. They feared to integrate her into the films, they nixed the script that would've had her with judy garland in the pirate, and she was too light for cairo.
MGM did not try and try to get roles for Lena...you must remember that MGM was the biggest studio in the business and that they could have developed film properties for her if they wanted to but it is courage they lacked...

Where did you work with Ted?
lenahorneclub 2 years ago
I worked with Ted at Verbum Dei Catholic High School. The ONLY reason I believed she was his mother is because he looked just like her.
What happened to him? He seemed like such a nice man. He seemed sad about not being with his mother.
LADYDAEE 2 years ago
Ted died in 1970. I think OD. He looked just like Lena except that he had green eyes.
