You could be correct. However, without the Federal Reserve system what do you propose? Gold & Silver only? The problem with that type of system is the money supply is so small you can't get anything done. Or in other words living standards will be far lower. I agree Federal Reserve is not a perfect system. However, get rid of greed and corruption and it works very well.

You compensate with the small money supply. Self sustainers could trade amoungst each other for free(ie: civillian trade routes). Educate people to think for themselves, teach self sustaining techniques, depend less from a central source and more on yourself. Commerce does go down, but the only people hurt would be the traders/bankers. If people could be self sustaining, thier power diminishes greatly.

Think about what that does to the value of the existing money eg. if in 1950 my grandfather saved enough to buy a car ($1500), but kept it for his future, thanks to inflation (creating more money) his $1500 is now worth nowhere near what it originally was. He had the value of a car and now he doesn't = THEFT.

Actually the gold system didn't work for many centuries. It had problems too. Like people shaving the coins is one. But also exactly what I said the money supply shrinks over time and is much too small to begin with. With the world population today I don't think there is even enough gold in the world. The money supply needs to grow to match the economy it serves. Gold alone can't do that. Perhaps we could tie our money to other things of value, including gold, that's possible.
