Anyone can do a 'technically good' diddly long fast boring guitar riff as long as they practise playing to within an inch of their life. But where is the fun in that? Like I said, it's boring. The same cannot be said for the Stones or much of the guitar work Keith has put down over the years. His music is based in the blues. It's emotional by definition. If you don't understand that, why are you even watching this video?
On the whole "technical vs emotional playing" thing, I think of it this way: There's a difference between writing and storytelling, but each skill is useless without the other.
People don't realize that playing fast dosn't necesarily make it "good". You can play the fastest riff or solo in the world and it can still sound like total shit.
There is a interview with him and ronny woods, that i've seen somewhere that says it all... The journalist ask to both of theme separately, who plays better, and keith says, "actually we are both pretty lousy, but together we are better then 10 others"
Keith is brilliant but comparing him with Joe Satriani is silly. I don't mean one is better than the other, I simply mean they are fields apart in terms of type of music. Mick Jagger had Satch as his tour guitarist a few years ago...I don't think he would pitch up someone he thought was useless. BOTH artists are valid in what they do.
all the saints will tell you the same thing...where it comes from and possible ways to get there...keith is such a being...hes got the combination to the vault...
there's no right or wrong way to play a guitar be free and do what you want as long as you like the way it sounds thats all that matters i ditched my high e string years ago because it kept breaking and i never used it
If only we had known about open G chord tuning back in the 60's and 70's. That was the secret to most of Keith's work. Jimmy Page used that trick too.
Well said re Joe Satriani. I couldn't tell you the name of one of his songs, if he's written any. Keith is a living legend and the Grand Master of what he does, composing great songs and playing guitar with class and originality.
@Ylviste Wow this is from a year back, I can compare and I just did, well a year ago lol. I was pointing out that shredding a guitar does not mean that it's better. People are always going to say whats better in regardless of their respective genres. Just an opinion.
@Razorc195 Umm, yeah .... me too. :-( I mean it both ways.
Kieth is also one of the shrewdest and most eloquent interviewees about Rock music. The dude really knows what he's talking about. I read somewhere that Pete Townsend was equally good in expounding on the Rock genre. Maybe, but I know Keith can bring it home verbally and musically. He's kinda' like my blues encyclopedia. :-)
Quit smoking Keith. Wanna see and hear you at 100.
I spent many hours figuring out minor, diminished, augmented chords etc. from open tunings, and it does perk you up - constant fascination with creative "ways out" as Kieth says. The scales are a bitch to play on open tunings. It can get very technical. I was always watching Kieth's hands and saying "WTF is he doing?! This makes no sense!" LOL! But it really does. You have to recreate all the patterns/positions. It's a real bitch, lol!
Interesting that he mentions seven string as well, because that is technically the ideal tuning for open G (but obviously not practical for the sixties era electrics). Russians have been using open G on seven string guitars as a standard for years.
Is this a serious question? This ain't Kieth, but I can tell you the answer is no. He retunes the strings so when you strum the guitar with no fingers on the fretboard you get a G chord. Tuning the low E down to a D just doesn't sound good, so he removed it. Simple as that.

I just saw you sing "Hickory Wind" from the Gram Parsons tribute concert.
Could you do an album, playing the acoustic, you singing ? That would be nice.

Gram Parsons probably influenced Keith to use 5-string open-G tuning also.

my dad is like a huge stones fan, so he has two guitars one tuned to regular 6 sting, and one to Keiths 5. heh.
I always said keith likes 5 cause he's a great bass player (dirty mac for the win, and come on he wrote the bass line to Sympthy).
