  • Such a legend for bringing alot of us white boys into the blues sounds and open tunings. They call him, and us all i think, the tumbling dice...

  • Only few guitarists are always recognisable in sound and way of playing. Keith's always is. Thát's what makes him so good in my book.

  • Keith's intro's to Stones songs like Gimme Shelter is pure genius songwriting.

  • I tried that today with my strat when I changed my strings, and it's friggin awesome

  • good

  • Man when he laughs, those lungs don't sound too good.

  • Anyone can do a 'technically good' diddly long fast boring guitar riff as long as they practise playing to within an inch of their life. But where is the fun in that? Like I said, it's boring. The same cannot be said for the Stones or much of the guitar work Keith has put down over the years. His music is based in the blues. It's emotional by definition. If you don't understand that, why are you even watching this video?

  • On the whole "technical vs emotional playing" thing, I think of it this way: There's a difference between writing and storytelling, but each skill is useless without the other.

  • People don't realize that playing fast dosn't necesarily make it "good". You can play the fastest riff or solo in the world and it can still sound like total shit.

  • @ralphcramdenjr Keith richards is already dead its just nobodys told him yet

  • Keith is the guitar players guitarist....nuf said.

  • long live kieth richards!! <3

  • There is a interview with him and ronny woods, that i've seen somewhere that says it all... The journalist ask to both of theme separately, who plays better, and keith says, "actually we are both pretty lousy, but together we are better then 10 others"

It's only rock n roll but i like it... a lot

  • "5 strings, two notes and one asshole..." one of the most influential and humble guitarists

  • He seems sober in this clip! Amazing!

  • Keith is brilliant but comparing him with Joe Satriani is silly. I don't mean one is better than the other, I simply mean they are fields apart in terms of type of music. Mick Jagger had Satch as his tour guitarist a few years ago...I don't think he would pitch up someone he thought was useless. BOTH artists are valid in what they do.

  • all the saints will tell you the same thing...where it comes from and possible ways to get there...keith is such a being...hes got the combination to the vault...

  • there's no right or wrong way to play a guitar be free and do what you want as long as you like the way it sounds thats all that matters i ditched my high e string years ago because it kept breaking and i never used it

  • If only we had known about open G chord tuning back in the 60's and 70's. That was the secret to most of Keith's work. Jimmy Page used that trick too.

  • Joe Satriani should go out on tour with The Stones. Maybe he can learn a thing or two about Rock n Roll while he is tuning Keith's guitar for him

  • @mystro810 LOL

  • Joe Satriani is a Teacher...but

Keith Richards is a Master, that's all!!!

  • KEITH IS THE BESST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well said re Joe Satriani. I couldn't tell you the name of one of his songs, if he's written any. Keith is a living legend and the Grand Master of what he does, composing great songs and playing guitar with class and originality.

  • funny look-a-like

  • I love playing 5 string =]

  • nice jacket.

  • bless him! always quite self-depricating about his playing...

  • 5 strings

    3 notes

    2 fingers

    Only 1 Keith Richards!

  • 0:54 No wonder you've got to use

capo's on all your guitars ☺

  • actually most of his guitars dont have capos on them

  • You gotta love Keith. Get the book "What Would Keith Richards do?"

  • Kieth wasn't the fastest player in the world, but many

many guitar lines he created were brilliant.

    Very hard to recreate.

  • oh i think he is just listen to the fucking stones the guitar work was always brilliant!

  • joe satriani is a great technical guitarist but his music is so shit compared to the stones.

skill does not always make u better

  • agree, Stones created a sound that is so beyond technical playing..........

  • Yeah...because it is soulless and not played from heart!

  • @GLeNss That is just stupid, nonsense, you can't compare the music of Joe and the Stones, they are so different. Both are amazing in their own right.

  • @Ylviste Wow this is from a year back, I can compare and I just did, well a year ago lol. I was pointing out that shredding a guitar does not mean that it's better. People are always going to say whats better in regardless of their respective genres. Just an opinion.

  • @GLeNss well said

  • being a fast guitarist does not make you good...

rolling stone magizine 's top 100 guitarists were not fast players they were kieth richards, chuck berry.. thats good guitarists for ya..

im just agreeing an elaborating on your comment

    cheers

  • @RalphCramdenJr

Keith is the guitar players guitarist....nuf said. I just wish he'd quit smoking before he kills himself.

  • @Razorc195 Umm, yeah .... me too. :-( I mean it both ways.

Kieth is also one of the shrewdest and most eloquent interviewees about Rock music. The dude really knows what he's talking about. I read somewhere that Pete Townsend was equally good in expounding on the Rock genre. Maybe, but I know Keith can bring it home verbally and musically. He's kinda' like my blues encyclopedia. :-)

Quit smoking Keith. Wanna see and hear you at 100.

  • I know exactly what he's talking about.

I spent many hours figuring out minor, diminished, augmented chords etc. from open tunings, and it does perk you up - constant fascination with creative "ways out" as Kieth says. The scales are a bitch to play on open tunings. It can get very technical. I was always watching Kieth's hands and saying "WTF is he doing?! This makes no sense!" LOL! But it really does. You have to recreate all the patterns/positions. It's a real bitch, lol!

  • play scales in an open tuning?? sure,

  • Kieth. You have become a blues God. Just like Sonny Boy and Robert Johnson. God Bless you!!!

  • And...? what is the problem with that ?

  • you see: keeth has studied math;-)

  • Greatest quote ever--5 strings, 3 notes, 2 fingers and one asshole :) Keith is the man! Oh--and nice jacket, too! Long live Keef!!!!!!

  • Great!

Keith IS truly a living legend!

THE greatest rock (and maybe blues, and country!) guitarist EVER!

    Certainly, the COOLEST man alive!

And goddamn HOT and SEXY, too!

  • Good onya Keith!

  • Keith said he "took Ry Cooder for everything I could get".

  • God those fingers are so screwed up, I assume from being old and playing guitar forever.

  • those fingers look like mine are starting too ...I have arthritic bone spurs, but for some reason it does not really effect my Guitar playing...

  • Keef you are looking good !

Keep it up ! its only rock n roll

  • Kitchen Kloth Keith ... the man with a minor chord .. Keep it up KKK!!

  • no he doens't neither. go away you nasty thing. SPAM ALERT

  • blues players so totally rock! yea dad!

  • Nice. Open tunings refreshed Keith. Getting jaded with standard. And then came the avalanche of titanic hits. Brilliant.

  • wats with his finger

  • Interesting that he mentions seven string as well, because that is technically the ideal tuning for open G (but obviously not practical for the sixties era electrics). Russians have been using open G on seven string guitars as a standard for years.

  • Keith: Isn't it true that Open G tuning duplicates the sound/tuning of a banjo.

I can hear it in 'You Got Me Rockin' ...

  • Is this a serious question? This ain't Kieth, but I can tell you the answer is no. He retunes the strings so when you strum the guitar with no fingers on the fretboard you get a G chord. Tuning the low E down to a D just doesn't sound good, so he removed it. Simple as that.

  • Keef you are looking good !

    Keep it up !

  • Brown Sugar, Start Me Up, She's So Cold, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Women.

Bassically most of the Stones hits.

  • She's So Cold ????

  • Yeh, i believe keith plays the song live in open g, i'm not very sure but i can play it just like the studio record in open g.

  • also "Happy" and "Mixed Emotions"

  • in what songs did he use a 5-string guitar?

  • Dear Keith,

I just saw you sing "Hickory Wind" from the Gram Parsons tribute concert.

Could you do an album, playing the acoustic, you singing ? That would be nice.

  • Gram Parsons probably influenced Keith to use 5-string open-G tuning also.

  • Keith looks like a pirate. RRRRRR

  • my dad is like a huge stones fan, so he has two guitars one tuned to regular 6 sting, and one to Keiths 5. heh.

I always said keith likes 5 cause he's a great bass player (dirty mac for the win, and come on he wrote the bass line to Sympthy).

  • living legend

  • I can't believe he answered my question!! I'm so lucky!

  • Sorry for any confusion, I was on another account when I said this comment... but anyways, yeah, thank you Keith SOOO much for your time!!!

  • ✈ ПП

    ❁П

  • dood sounds like he fell out of a cocunut tree!

  • Five strings works for keith. He's done some great guitar work in his life, truly a legend!

  • Haha love his ending statement

  • 5 strings but what notes tuned to? I would like to know 2 must be the same. I play violin I don't understand. g is open then what?

  • His main tuning is G D G B D with the low E string removed. When played un-fretted it makes a G major chord.

  • wow i never knew about him doing that

  • DGDGBD is open G tuning for guitar...I use it when playing Stones material!!! KR takes off the bottom string and plays GDGBD.

  • thank you musicdude

  • Interesting?

  • 5 strings,3notes,2fingers and 1 asshole....

  • that made me crack up

  • SEXY

  • Playing a telecaster without touching the fret board ,that sound can't be beat.

  • very intretsting
