The sound is horrible, which makes it sound like Carl is the only one singing. Yet, his voice is so incredible, it carries and sounds great. RIP, Carl. We miss and love you.
mike douglas was the coolest millionaire/host of all time. he had co-hosts who were some of the most radical folks of the 60's and nothing seemed to faze him! john lennon and yoko ono, Sylvester stone. stone was so out of it he could barely speak-mike was very nice and just cruised on through.
What's all this here about schoolmarms? Is that term (whether one word or two) even in this song? Anyway... Kudos to Mike Douglas for putting the gorgeous Dennis Wilson up front--and shoving Mike Love in his Manson-phase to the back.
They seem to be playing live here. Dennis is certainly playing the drums that we are hearing.
Sounds like all of the mics are turned way low except for Carl's. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I would have liked to hear the harmonies a bit more though.
@stingray1964 That's probably why he was so upset about Pet Sounds and Smile. It wasn't music to be played live, so they could get anyone to sing his parts on the records.
@dytakeda Mmm, yup you're probably right. I just bought the Smile sessions....(so amazing) so what's the deal...? It was never released at the time? The Beatles must have heard it though...I hear so much of Seargent Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour in Smile....??
@stingray1964 Smile was never released at the time, so it's stature grew to legendary proportions. The Beatles never heard it, but drips and drabs eventually got released like Surf's Up, Vegetables, Cabinessence, etc. Some of it re-recorded like Windchimes. Mike Love didn't want the BB going that direction, I think because he was afraid audiences wouldn't come to the shows if they couldn't do the latest music live.
@flgal88 His "sweet face." As a man, I would not have brought it up; but as an older man when so many formerly older faces now look young, that is an accurate description.
@flgal88 Wonderfully pure voice. Notice he had no vocal support? I suppose we must accept that many of the past masters are no longer with us, but their music lives on. We are lucky because we can enjoy them still.
@rocksinger45 Yes Carl had the voice of an Angel. This is just one example. In Carl's defense, the public address system can be crummy. I recall my first rock concert in 1969, The Turtles, whose voices were super on radio and albums. Well the PA system was so bad all we could hear was the music. Awful experience. Everyone kept yelling between sets, "TURN UP THE PA." They never could.
@rocksinger45 Thanks. That is comforting. Maybe one day singers will seek to duplicate precisely these voices and instruments as orchestras do with classical music.
@MyPaulHenry To duplicate the music as it was is imposible because music like works of art are period pieces, you see it's the way the guitar amp, strings, recording studio, tape recorder, tubes etc sounded on that day that make a recording sound the way that it does. Many people have gone into recording studios and said can you give me a Motown sound or what ever and have failed miserably, that could even happen at Motown studio because the sound is frozen in time. :)
@rocksinger45 You said Carl Wilson had the voice of angles. An obtuse or an acute angle? Oh wait you meant ANGELS. Wow. Do I feel stupid for trying to make you smarter!
@rocksinger45 That's 'Angels.' And don't let your insecurity show when someone corrects you. You look bad. Love, your school marm. (BTW, 'school marm' is two words, not one).
@DailyMouth Absolutely not insecure. I tried to spell schoolmarm and it came up in one word so you do your own search and see for yourself. OMT, I've never looked better.
@rocksinger45 Ha! Made ya look! BTW, school marm (two words) is the correct English version (Queen's English). Schoolmarm (one word) is the Americanize version. But, we be good, yes?
@DailyMouth Er...no " It should be "schoolma'am" the apostrophe indicating the omitted letter "d"- from "School madam". not the apostrophe and the complete lack of the letter "r".
@2469jeff Yes I did...sometimes the print is so small on my lap top that I can't make out what I'm typing. So one else mentioned the same thing to me.
So glad they did this live. Carl's voice is so pure, I can see why Brian treasured it so much. Slight pity that the background harmonies are obscured by the music, but I'm real glad to see this.
@quieterrps Wow! I did not know Brian had that opinion, considering Brian also has done a beautiful rendition. They can make their singing voices very similar: duh, I should know that since they were brothers.
Yeah. Proper acoustics are vital. That is why it is so hard to duplicate studio recordings.
why do people hate mike love?

Funny to see how much Carl licked his lips when singing. I think he continued that habit on into adulthood but was just hard to see with the beard.
