That's it, renewable energy is mostly free, it is the equipment to harvest and utilize it that costs. But at least it does not emit greenhouse gases (CO2) and I can plug in my electric car too!

The energy comes from the water on a higher level reservoir.
Its not the 10 kW pump making 20 kW power on the turbine, or any of that "free energy" crap (as in energy appearing from nothing)!
It is free energy because he doesn't pay for the water
