whoever made this video, GREAT job on the excerpts, music selection and timing...that was awesome to watch and remember watching it live that day in 86 vividly
People will argue about who was the better golfer probably forever, and I doubt anyone changes anyone else's mind one way or the other. But this much is clear; there's no doubt who is the better man. And in the final analysis, isn't that most important of all? And it's a helluva tie-breaker...
Also, regarding the lame argument of equipment; an athlete like Tiger Woods would find a way to dominate w/ those persimmon drivers and crap balls just like Snead, Hogan, Nelson, Palmer, Nicklaus, Player, Watson, Trevino, et al did. Likewise, had those guys played w/ today's equipment, they'd still have been a cut above (or more) the rest of the tour fodder. Greatness in sport isn't about equipment or technology. It's about talent, work ethic, and heart. All those guys had it. Tiger has it.
I love how a really cool Nicklaus tribute stirs such controversy regarding Tiger Woods. Tiger's competition is weak??? Equipment helps his short game??? But, I guess it doesn't, in any way, give him an advantage over Nicklaus off the tee?? Jack Nicklaus is the greatest CHAMPION to ever swing a golf club. Tiger Woods is the greatest TALENT to ever swing a golf club. But, soon enough, Tiger will have more Majors than Jack. Then what will everybody say? Jack was great. Tiger is great.
I like the editing, I like the music. Odd to me that some would express disdain for a 1985 issued tune with obvious lyrical relevance playing behind a 1986 highlight reel.
The music that needs to get lost is the embalming muzak CBS plays at intro and outro at the Master's. Golf is a sport of grinding nervous pressure . . . how much cooler, how much more relevant if CBS had the guts to make the "members" listen to Jimmy Smith or the Ventures . . . or anything but that miserable mortician's theme
The fields in Tigers's era are so much deeper than in Jack's era it's not even close. In Jack's era - you had Gary Player from South Africa - now you have Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman, Retief Goosen, Tim Clark, etc. Same goes with other countries like Australia, etc. A Fijian like VJ wold never have had the opportunity to play in Jack's era - given his race and lack of funds. Tiger, not Jack, played in a vastly more competitive era.
@conibral Certainly, Nicklaus faced a stronger challenge more consistently from a select group of players. But, you're right. Top to bottom, today's Tour is just stronger. I'd argue that the TOP players of Jack's era were stronger, simply because they won a lot of Majors. Palmer, Trevino, Watson, Casper, Larry Nelson, Hale Irwin, etc. But, NIcklaus only had to worry about a few guys every week. Tiger has to deal w/ the usual suspects, + YE Yang, Bob May, Rocco, DiMarco, etc.
That was one of the greatest final rounds. With all due respect to Nicklaus, Seve made a mental mistake that cost him dearly. If he puts the ball on the green it was over. I thought he would never recovered from that loss but he proved me wrong with his win at the British Open in 1988.
@herbfletcher Ballesteros made stupid mistakes the entire week. He could've won that tournament by 5 shots. The guy that should be kicking himself over the 1986 Masters is Tom Kite. Short birdie misses at 10, 14, and 18 on Sunday. Then there's Norman, but he's been through enough.
"The battle has joined!" "Your destiny is right here." "The bear...has come out of hibernation." "Maybe....yes sir!" The best 4 hole stretch in the history of golf.
i dont think there is a comparison between tiger and jack anyway, jack is by very very far better golfer and ambassador for his sport than tiger will ever be... to all the ppl out there that think tiger is better one question: lets see if tiger wins a major when he is 46!!!
@thestuvylives the cool thing was that Nicklaus didn't like his footing on the tee, so when he took the time to get comfortable and find a spot to tee his ball, that gave Weiskopf time to answer Nantz's question thoroughly. But, you're right, what he said was brilliant. And, he knew to finish his thoughts just as Nicklaus was about to take the club back. A veteran broadcaster move from a non broadcaster.
okay here's to all of y'all biased sob's, difference between jack and tiger is that... jack had more opponents that didnt think number 2 was fine.... that cared about the number one spot..the trophy .. not the second place prize money., like some of todays players are after....(i think) and dont talk about equipment ..cus' its not like tiger is the only one using new age clubs... i am a fan of both of them... but i think jack is the best (as of now) jack actually beat winners, not chokers.
@BoHoVsGolf Very true - if you watch players like Westwood or Mickelson, it seems like they couldn't care less who is top spot as long as the money keeps rolling in..Got nothing against them but there is just so little passion around these days..We need a duel in golf similar to Federer and Nadal in tennis, those guys are nuts about the game, especially when going up against each other to prove who is the best in the world...
The Nicklaus', the Trevino's, the Watson's were much better ball-strikers in their days. Those balata balls, those primitive clubs and they still shot the scores. We'll have to see if Tiger can win a major at 46 years old. I would still have to say Nicklaus is the best of all time. Although Trevino had the best swing of all time.
Great synch with the putt on 17 and the snare roll into the climax of the song. I am an audio engineer and a big golf fan so I really appreciate the way you did that. One of my favorite songs synched to my favorite Masters and my Favorite Golfer.
And Jack also shot 19 under at the T.P.C. (The Players Championship) at Sawgrass which stood until Greg Norman shot 24 under 264 in 1994. And Norman should have beat or equalled at least the U.S. Masters record Nicklaus and Floyd set the yaer before Woods did it but had a disaster in that final round while playing with Faldo.
Okay David Toms shot 15 under 265 at the 2001 U.S. PGA. A tournament which Mickelson shot 14 under 266 in but those scores happened in that same tournament while Jack's opponents did it in all of the Majors in different eras.
The competition is much better today. How can Tiger's equipment can be considered an advantage when all his peers use the same stuff? If anything, Tiger has always been one of the slowest to adapt new tech. You don't seem to realize that guys like Player, Watson and Nicklaus etc had as many opportunities as they did because of the weaker fields. They very were talented but most weren't. Jack acknowledges how much deeper the fields are, but then again he actually knows what he is talking about.
@Nexus54a Johnny Miller shot 8 under par 63 in the last round of the 1973 U.S. Open. Shot 13 under (65, 66) for the last two rounds of the 1975 U.S. Masters which Jack won.
Tom Watson holds the second lowest aggregate total at the Open Championship (12 under 268) which Jack finished second in while shooting 11 under 269.
Raymond Floyd shot 17 under 271 (65, 66, 70, 70) at the 1976 U.S. Masters. Shot a 63 at the 1982 U.S. PGA which he won.
@Nexus54a Then you have the normal candidates jack also lost against and conquered. Great players like Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Tom Weiskopf, Tony Lema, Roberto De Vicenzo and Billy Casper. That is a better quality of opposition than the players Tiger competes against in my book.
@Nexus54a Another player I forgot is Ben Crenshaw who shot 14 under at the 1995 U.S. Masters which he won as well as winning it in 1984. And Fred Couples shot 13 under at the 1992 U.S. Masters which he won. My point is all of the players I mentioned all have better scoring records in the Majors than the players Tiger competes against. All of those players I mentioned were beaten by Nicklaus in different eras. Tiger's competition is better you say? lol Somehow I don't think so.
@Nexus54a Complete rubish. Players today have it soooooooo much better. Better playing conditions, Better practice facilities, Better coaches, Better equiptment, Better transportation, Better Money and I could go on and on and on how much easier they have it today.
Besides, Tiger already ruined his chances on being the best Golfer ever. Even if he wins 30 majors. Jack is not only a great golfer, but also a great Father, Husband and Man. Golf is a gentelmans game..Tiger is a pussy and a cheat
I remember thinking after he birdied #10 that it would be nice to see him make a run, but never thought he could win at that point. The next 8 holes were the most exciting golf I've seen in the 50+ years I've been watching the game, and I cheered and cried when he won and hugged his son caddying for him that day. A great day for a good man. Tiger may prove to be as good a golfer, but he'll never be the man Jack is.
How anyone can compare Woods and Nicklaus is beyond me? They are two champion golfers from two different times. We should never compare two of the greatest players that any man will ever see. In ten years time people will compare the next superstar to tiger woods but why??? They will just be the greatest player in there time. Plus there are so many great players out there!!!
18Majors, compare to 145Majors, nicklaus did win around the world? thats one part i think he is better then woods
Google 1986 masters highlight DVD, you can get it about $14, very nice dvd that highlights the first three rounds and then replays the final round as if you were watching it that Sunday...
guys, most golfers have said from the group that played in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Jack in his prime would destroy Tiger, while boxing experts have said Ali in his prime would beat Tyson, and i agree with both of them. Jack is the greatest of them all. Jack had a field of players to compete against who play for the love of golf, not the lure of money.
@RUSHisRIGHT09 3 birdies in a row starting at 9, 10, and 11. Bogey -12, Birdie 13, par 14, Eagle 15, Birdie 16, Birdie 17, Par 18 after a GREAT LAG PUTT.
What you idiots need to understand is that when Nicklaus or Watson or Trevino talk about Tiger being out of their league, they are doing so because they are gracious, classy gentlemen. In reality, Nicklaus in his prime would destroy Tiger.
Even Watson, in his 60's, almost WON the British Open! Tiger didn't even make the cut!
The greatest ever. Tiger who? Tiger has the benefit of playing against bums that care more about the big money each week than the love of the game. Watson, Ballesteros, Floyd, Palmer, Player, Trevino, etc. wouldn't cower and fear Tiger like these heartless hackers of today.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you are spot on.. other than the fact that Nicklas, Trevino, and Watson have all stated publicly that Tiger is the best ever talent wise. Trevino actually said he wouldn't have been able to stay in the same zip code as Tiger. However you opinion must be more intelligent than those guys you claim to be better. the field is stronger today from top to bottom. back then you had the guys you named and that was it. the other guys were pumping gas on the weekends
I have never heard any of those comments by the legends. They just inteviewed Palmer and asked him if he could win today and he said he would and you only need to look at you tube to hear Nicklaus' comments on the subject. Trevino has always been humble but he has been on record as saying if Mickelson had a better caddie he would have beaten Tiger. Tigr fans always bring up the mystery comments why dont you post a video of Nicklaus and Palmer bowing to Tiger.
I think the only true statement is, until Tiger wins 18 majors, he can't be considered better than Nicklaus. This is statement not even considering that he's had the benefit of better equipment and weaker competition.
@mackertdaddy Maybe he has weaker competition but better equipment? Everyone is playing with better equipment so that part of your statement is stupid. In any case, Jack is the man.
Yeah, I'd agree this remains the greatest day in Majors history.
You had the tragedy (Seve), the frustration (Kite), the agony (Norman), and at the end of the day the most memorable victory of an amazing career - Jack Nicklaus.
It's a shame these Nicklaus posts always end up turning into a Tiger-Jack debate though.
Totally different era, courses, equipment & opponents - they can't be properly compared.
I have yet to see Tiger come from behind and win a meaningfull tournament like a major.I know hes won regular events but never a major. And watching jack come back from like 8 or 9 back was great stuff,
I really do think there's a reason for that. I've caught a lot of flak for saying this, but evidence indicates that Jack's top competitors were better--not more talented, but better at closing out tournaments, mentally tougher, more ferocious competitively--than Tiger's. If Tiger's at the top of his game, it really is pretty much over. If he's hitting on all cylinders, he wins. If he's not, he's probably not going to come from behind. That's how these majors seem to go.
Correct. Eventually, Tiger will come from behind to win a major just as eventually he will lose a major when having the 54-hole lead.
Nicklaus won 10 of 12 when leading or sharing the lead after 54 holes. The 2 he lost were the '71 Masters (even par 72) and the '77 Open (4 under 66 in the duel with Watson). Hardly a choke in either case, but Tiger groupies love to bring that up - the fact Jack is not 100% and Tiger is 14 of 14. Of course Jack won 8 coming from behind to Tiger's so far 0.
Jack was a far better golfer then Tiger. I said it, the thing that makes tiger look so good is his competition is week, I said it, Jack would win 30 majors today if he played against guys that Tiger has too. Hell Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and even Lee Trevino would pack Tiger's lunch in their prime, I said it, Jack drives the ball better he is a better long iron player he is a better clutch putter the only reason Tiger has a better short game is euipment. Jack wouldbeat Tiger easy.
Nicklaus has played in 2 tournaments in the last 2 years and won them both! Tiger won against scared golfers...they are not scared anymore... Tiger is also finding out that golf is tough when you don't make every putt you look at, like he did for 10 years... Thank god for Y.E.Yang staring him down!!!
@BradCarter1888 Your argument is illogical. The reason Tiger has had 'weaker' competition is because he's been SO good that other players couldn't keep up with him. If Jack had been as good as Tiger we would never even have heard of Trevino, Player, Watson etc. Think about it.......
Before you ask - no, I'm not a Tiger-lover. I took up golf (fanatically) in the mid-80s as a kid - Jack's '86 Masters victory is what inspired me to play the game.
@BradCarter1888 What in the fuck are you talking about? Are you seriously saying Woods isn't a clutch putter? That he didn't have the competition Jack had? Ever hear of Lefty? Els? Singh? Furyk? Love? Goosen? Just because Arnie, Watson and Trevino were as good as they were likable doesn't make them better than any of the monsters that have been losing to Woods for more than a decade now.
It's the equipment? Really?
Two more things: it's weak, not week. And it's eat Tiger's lunch, not pack it.
@BradCarter1888 'Jack was a far better golfer then Tiger' = Rubbish, and what's equipment got to do with the price of fish?? if anything it's closed the gap between the great and the rest, and to say Jack was a better clutch putter than Tiger is just plain stupid, until a few years ago Tiger made every clutch putt that mattered, the biiger the occasion the more automatic he was, thinking US Open, Bay Hill x 2, Dubai, US PGA etc etc etc etc Jacks great, but seriously you shouldn't dis Tiger
You were THERE? Incredible. What a privilege. I remember coming home and watching this on tape Sunday evening, after playing in some tournament myself. I couldn't believe my eyes. A couple of times I really thought I'd fallen asleep and was dreaming it, since Jack was always the guy I tried to emulate, golfwise. I still get chills thinking about it. It's hard for me to think of any moment I've ever seen in sports that would compare to it.
look at the leaderboard-i mean its just packed with quality players.this will always be my favourite major.also-do you remember the 1998 us masters when nicklaus got to within 2 shots of the lead on sunday aged 58? incredible.
That was so crazy...hobbling his way around the course, and still hitting it well enough to contend. Totally ridiculous. With all his hip and back problems, I never thought he'd be one of those guys who played well for so long. Snead, you could understand. But Jack? I guess you shouldn't underestimate an athlete like that, with that level of golf intelligence. You heard about him shooting 32 on the front nine of a course opening just recently, right?
I remember when they came on the air in 1998 they cam on showing Nicklaus making birdie at 2-3-5 and he had a makeble birdie at 8 when they went live. It made the hair stand up on my neck when Nance said "the Nicklaus heroics were just begining" good times
Nice vid, I've seen Jacks highlights of this famous Masters win but didn't realise Seve choked, that 2nd on 15 was a shocker

British Open or Open Championship: 11 under 269 on a very difficult course in Turnberry but still lost to the great Tom Watson who shot 12 under 268.
U.S. PGA: 8 under 272 and has also shot a 64 in this tournament in 1964 but lost to Bobby Nichols that year who shot a then record 9 under 271.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
you are spot on.. other than the fact that Nicklas, Trevino, and Watson have all stated publicly that Tiger is the best ever talent wise.

This is statement not even considering that he's had the benefit of better equipment and weaker competition.
mackertdaddy 2 years ago 19
@mackertdaddy Maybe he has weaker competition but better equipment? Everyone is playing with better equipment so that part of your statement is stupid. In any case, Jack is the man.

@mackertdaddy - No truer words were ever spoken... I agree 100%...

Let's just salute them both!

I have yet to see Tiger come from behind and win a meaningfull tournament like a major.I know hes won regular events but never a major. And watching jack come back from like 8 or 9 back was great stuff,
dunny1977 2 years ago 5
I really do think there's a reason for that. I've caught a lot of flak for saying this, but evidence indicates that Jack's top competitors were better--not more talented, but better at closing out tournaments, mentally tougher, more ferocious competitively--than Tiger's. If Tiger's at the top of his game, it really is pretty much over. If he's hitting on all cylinders, he wins. If he's not, he's probably not going to come from behind. That's how these majors seem to go.
emncaity 2 years ago

BradCarter1888 2 years ago 15
@BradCarter1888 this is such a flawed argument.
MattJones1418 1 year ago
@BradCarter1888 You go!!!!
Nedbeaner 11 months ago
@BradCarter1888 Your argument is illogical. The reason Tiger has had 'weaker' competition is because he's been SO good that other players couldn't keep up with him. If Jack had been as good as Tiger we would never even have heard of Trevino, Player, Watson etc. Think about it.......
Before you ask - no, I'm not a Tiger-lover. I took up golf (fanatically) in the mid-80s as a kid - Jack's '86 Masters victory is what inspired me to play the game.
batface76 10 months ago
@BradCarter1888 What in the fuck are you talking about? Are you seriously saying Woods isn't a clutch putter? That he didn't have the competition Jack had? Ever hear of Lefty? Els? Singh? Furyk? Love? Goosen? Just because Arnie, Watson and Trevino were as good as they were likable doesn't make them better than any of the monsters that have been losing to Woods for more than a decade now.
It's the equipment? Really?
Two more things: it's weak, not week. And it's eat Tiger's lunch, not pack it.
nuwanda1 9 months ago

It's hard for me to think of any moment I've ever seen in sports that would compare to it.
emncaity 2 years ago 2
yes i know what you mean.
look at the leaderboard-i mean its just packed with quality players.this will always be my favourite major.also-do you remember the 1998 us masters when nicklaus got to within 2 shots of the lead on sunday aged 58? incredible.
bigpaulothe1st 2 years ago
That was so crazy...hobbling his way around the course, and still hitting it well enough to contend. Totally ridiculous. With all his hip and back problems, I never thought he'd be one of those guys who played well for so long. Snead, you could understand. But Jack? I guess you shouldn't underestimate an athlete like that, with that level of golf intelligence. You heard about him shooting 32 on the front nine of a course opening just recently, right?
emncaity 2 years ago 3
I remember when they came on the air in 1998 they cam on showing Nicklaus making birdie at 2-3-5 and he had a makeble birdie at 8 when they went live. It made the hair stand up on my neck when Nance said "the Nicklaus heroics were just begining" good times
