  • That Loco's Long! Lol!

  • the pentrex video of the big boy, forgot to put that in.

  • Actually the pentrex video said that it could pull 5 mile train on level track as it was constructed,an ideal, but not in the realm of reality.I had a centennial copy of the article in trains magazine, but it was destroyed by water damage, the train heading for Utah had the 6900 as lead unit and 5 sd units not sure what number designation, thought 45's but not sure they were around back then,it was a very long train and 6900 pulled the cargo and the idling sd's up the mountains by itself.

  • Lets see UP bigboy do that, and the 6900 series were fitted with larger than normal pilot plows because of their extreme adhesion to the rails, these were bigmen, the incredible hulk of the rails.I heard a story where one of these rounded a curve and breaked for a rock slide ,knocked the front truck off the track and kicked boulder as tall as itself down a ravene, only dented the pilot, boulders beware.

  • @kittty2005 One Big Boy could pull a freight train 5 and a half miles long by itself! To add icing to the cake, the Big Boys were not the most powerful steam locomotives by far. The N&W 2-8-8-2s (Y6Bs) would generate 34,625 more pound feet of tractive effort than the Big Boys. The Allegheny 2-6-6-6s generated 1,500 more horsepower than the Big Boys.

  • I love this loco, makes me cry to see it reduced to meanial tasks. These locos had a better alloy coupler than previous models and had to have a soft start feature added to prevent ripping the coupler out of lead car, this behemoth is so heavy even with a 3% grade the wheels did not slip and a standard notch 8 start would rip the coupler out of lead car on long train,so they came up with a solution and this was testing involving the worst worst case scenario.

  • Who was the idiot holding a baby out on the side of this massive loco? AND, while it was moving on a turntable?

Who was the idiot who allowed this to happen? Talk about shades of Michael Jackson. Grow up and act responsibly!

  • its even still got its beacon hw coo

  • Comment removed

  • Anybody know what the cost on one of these brand new would be?

  • Great video! That's a lot of power...very impressive.

  • Wow I love this locomotive. GM EMD built, I believe the X in the designation stood for Experimental and has 6,600 HP total.Would love to see this in action.........

  • Hey?...what's the current largest locomotive in operation in the US?...besides this one.

  • @JetMechMA: AC6000's (and C6044AC's) are 76 feet long, while SD9043MAC's are 80 feet long.

  • What a beautiful machine. This is a special video that captures it in a way that no other video can, with it being on a turntable like that. Great job. I've been in the one on display in North Platte NE and for some reason it just really grabbed me.

  • It might end up in general service during a ferry move (for example, Cheyenne to Portola) but otherwise limited to special service now.

  • @cchan006 And even then, its prob dead in consist

  • This is what children think live under their beds.

  • i miss the rail road after all the years i put on there. and yes mawzaroo its hell working them derailments. i saw a engine go over one time in altus oklahoma where a apprentice in training hit the front brakes instead of the car brakes and they slammed forward and rolled that engine over. it took two cranes to get it back up again. working the accidents and losing friends i dont miss. it seems somebody was always getting hurt. but i miss the job and the friends i had. god bless.

  • there one in trs 2006, its my fav to drive

  • These locomotives, cannot beat the 125`s

    HST`s.

  • this thing probaly was hell to the engineers backing up

  • awesome video

  • Whaauuuu...thats what i calld a huge locomotive. I like it wery much. Can you tell me more about this locomotives engines. Is the engines a GM 16-645E3 ???...Are these locomotive equipped with a silencer. I really want to hear this big locomotives go up to run 8.

Wery nice locomotive. Thanks. I like this video wey much. 5 ratings from here.

  • Yup, I believe 645E3's are in the DDA40X's, including the 6936. As for high notch running, look for cnw8577's video titled "Pacing UP 6936 west" right here on YouTube.

  • SWEET!

  • Very impressive.

  • We got 6944 at the St.Louis museum. But they said UP pulled out all the pistons so it would never run again. Shooth move UP.

  • These were awesome engines. What a thrill it was to hear the power of one of these monsters when they fired up. It is too bad that they were too ridged and heavy. They were a bitch to rerail when they went on the ground

  • wow that thing is huge!

  • HUGE machine. This thing was built to try and match the power of one steam locomotive.

  • Does it ever come off the table?

  • The 6936 is often on the move, so after that weekend was over, it left the table and went back to Portola, CA.

  • This is a locomotive!

  • it was way to damn big.. the repair cost was more than the profit margine. incredible locomotive. for its size

  • That is a monster, would love to hear it under torgue

  • its basically 2 sd40's in one. back when railroads tried to out-do each other by having a bigger dick

  • used to bring these 6900 to omaha shops for service, they where nothing but junk. always on the ground cause of the weight. if one side was down then the whole unit was out of service, which mean . that two units where out of service,,,,,,

  • impresionante maquina!!!

  • This is the longest ever produced one-section diesel locomotive and has 6600 HP.

  • That is some sweet footage of a GIAGANTIC locomotive! How much HP does it have?

    10,000? 5*****

  • wtf... that's a freaking monster of a train. What on earth is this used for? my god lol. I'd hate waiting at a railroad crossing for this train to go by. lol.

  • what a monster... they should spin this thing 24/7!

  • That engine sounds like a monster just idling there like that. Looks like it'd just eatcha alive.

  • Must have hit a nerve here - just too fucking hilarious... lol

  • Guys, why dis eash other? We're all railfans here. Regardless of what country or culture, trains are trains :)

  • I remember as a kid listening to these trains link up and "hitch rattle" down in the Dunsmuir Yard as they took on cars and loads and crews. Ahhhh the good old days!

  • "Blodpreassure"? What the hell is that? Is that like a french word for "we can't do anything for ourselves so just sit around criticizing everyone else"? Or maybe the french word for "Well, Our stinking trains go BACKWARDS faster than forwards!!" lol

  • You just keep eating those Big Mac's (not a locomotive) then you will find out what your "blood pressure" is.

And please go on picking on the french - I don't care since I am not french.

But hey -at least your comment made me laugh, so I guess it's not completely useless....lol

  • The "Big Jack", although retired, remains as one of the most powerful land vehicles ever constructed. It's starting tractive effort has only been matched by a small handful of other locos. Dwarfs anything Europe has. Too bad, so sad, bye-bye!

  • As far as I know the starting tractive effort of an DDA40X is about 600kn.

One half of the European IORE locomotive (build in Germany, operated in Sweden) is rated at 700kn.

    Not sad at all...

  • I'll tell you what - the newer GM SD90's have a tractive effort of 890 kn each. That's that.

    Too bad, so sad, bye-bye.

  • Alright, you win this one.

However I have the slow your nationalism a bit, as in times of globalisation, all electronical equipment of EMD hhp locomotives comes from Siemens Germany, and GE hhp engines get their electronics and semiconductors from ABB Switzerland.

  • I don't care who wins... I love talking about trains!

Also - I'm not a nationalist. American, yes, but my favorite tennis player is Roger Federer, and my favorite race car driver is Ron Fellows, a Canadian.

  • The "Big Jack" pioneered the use of modular electronics in railroading, the test bed for the reliability of Dash 2 locomotives in the 1970's.

Europeans pioneered the AC traction technology in the 1980's, yet another railroading revolution based on electronics, for better reliability and efficiency of traction motors.

Too bad there's no longer an economic need for the DDA40X, or we'd be seeing 8000+ hp "DD40AC" today, matching or exceeding the awesome power of the mighty UP gas turbines.

  • GE should have been in a better position as it is with the AC6000CW, 1 engine produces 6000 HP, the same the DDA40X had to have 2 with! Think if you had a DD6000AC locomotive! Thats 12,000 HP right there, but why go through with complicating when you can just add 2 of the same single locomotive? Thus why the DDA40X was elimenated, Efficency.

  • yeah. but this locomotive was constructed in the 60`s and i don`t think even GE or GM/EMD had the technology to produce engines with 6000 horsepower or more at that time. GE also had a big double engine locomotive at that time, the u50c and that locomotive only produced 5000 horsepower with 2 engines..

  • yah my god I could imagine seeing a DD6000AC built damn that would be huge

  • Sorry Europe.

AMERICAN TRAINS ARE THE GREATEST, HEAVIEST, BIGGEST SONS A BITCHES EVER BUILT!

  • You forgot one important thing - American trains are also the slowest trains ever build....... sorry america.

  • That may be, but I love them all the same.

  • Funny, your profile says your location is the USA. No wonder no one likes like France. Anyone can make a train go fast. You have to have the economy and power to run 3km plus long trains packed with goods and supplies to fuel such a strong nation. Face it, you are just jeaolous. At least we don't pay what translates into 5-6 USA dollars for a gallon of petrol. Yes I know you buy in litres.

  • What are you overreacting for? Beware of your blodpreassure... lol

  • IORE fucks american trains in the ass.

  • Not when it comes to raw, unbridled horsepower.

  • At least 3 times of the length of our EMD exports ...

  • IN A MEXICAN MUSEUM EXIST ONE DDA40x de number 6911

  • uhhh im getting dizzy lol

  • That's no moon...it's a space station! Cool vid!

  • it would be tops to see one of those rolling down the tracks in england,if they dont break under its weight

  • Wow....what a beast
