as for the who's better who's best argumetnt. JB is in french so that's no good. AH has no vocal melody whatsoever. SW is musically and dramatically strong. Bowie did the definitive version of My Death, And Scott nailed this one.
I think this song is all about interpretaion really. The Alex Harvey version is menacing while the Brel version is all Galic passion, This version seems to be about performance. You can't get away from Scott Walkers voice. But all are great in their own way.
interesting to hear how each version of this song changes it so much. it's really difficult to compare them. i personally prefer scott's cold and distant character, his singing style makes him seem so detached from the subject matter and i like that effect. alex's is more modern and understandable but brel's character is the most true imo.
The original is obviously the starting point, so IMO it's the best..Then this one...Then the Alex Harvey version, which of course led to Vambo Marble Eye doing their version..when I heard VME's version, I searched and found Alex Harvey, which led to this one, and then finally to Jacques Brel. NEXT?
Sorry for me this is the best version, Alex Harveys is like a comedy act. Alex Harveys vocals can't be compared to Scott Walkers..... NOOOOOO WAYYYYYY !!!
@blame78 "Alex Harvey is the only one who can sing this"
How about Jacques Brel?...
In 1968 this song was my first aquaintance with Brel genius. And I was a Scott Supervoice Walker fan. So understandably, I consider this the best version ever. Scott anglo-sized and sophisticated Brel. What's wrong with that? Brel's dead guy in Funeral Tango IS a snob.
Nevertheless you may be right, I don't know the Harvey version. And I have no desire whatsoever. After hearing David Bowie rape Amsterdam.
I started to listen to it but had to cut it short and he seemed to me to be making an absolute hash of it! different strokes for different folks as they say!
Great to great !!! Cut my legs of n burn myself alive :P I put that on a dole claim once when they asked what will i do if I don't get this benefit ! lol
@Raziul His interpretation is so off the mark I don't believe any amount of musicianship could save it. This version is a kin to Britney Spears' cover of satisfaction. Totally missed the spirit of the song.
this is great. humour, drama, music. perfect.

Nice voice, but the version lacks the emotion and passion of the Alex Harvey version to me, personally.

This sounds like the easy listening version of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band version.
If you want to hear this song with incredible passion, check out Alex Harvey.

Scott Walkers version is probably THE best, followed closely by Marc Almond.
