Ohhh... I've always thought that I have to press the 5th fret of all strings to tune it right... looks like I missed the part on how to tune the 5th string ;P Thanks ;P
How do I know how much tension I need on the strings? When you tune the knobs you are only adjusting slightly, however on my guitar I can spin the knobs around several times and I have no idea how tight the strings should be.
Hey ur guitar sounds so cool.. i;ve got a semi acoustic guitar but doesn;t sound tht good. Kindly tell me about EQ setting also i wana knw the difference among tuning types like, Standard E, F major, D major, Standard Eb etc. ?
see i am really bad with tuning by ear but none of the tuners i have lloked at have mic ports so i can tune my acoustic so i cant really tune mine. any help?
thanks man..... @dannyboylee and pasktachi.......tbh if u dont even know about frets and anything else then u should learn those 1st b4 trying 2 play.
Dude, what is with these tuning videos on YouTube? I'm tuning my guitar for the first time so I can learn how to play! I don't even know what a fret is. I'm with you up through tuning the A string, then I'm lost! Arg!
@dannyboylee these videos are for ppl who have basic knowledge of a guitar. a fret is between each of those lines on the guitar. the fifth fret is marked by a little dot on most guitars
@dannyboylee relax. its my first time too. be logical, if you dont know what a fret is look it up. these guys are here to show you how to tune it, not to explain what a fret is. daymn
@Nutmuffin12 Hey, douchebag, I know what a fret is now. I posted that comment over a year ago, so I don't need every single person who JUST discovered this video to comment me about it. Also, my original comment has almost fifty "thumbs up" on it, which means I'm not the only one who was frustrated by this video at first. You shouldn't have replied to my comment if you had no clue when it was posted. You should have done a little due diligence, then replied.
I've never relied on a tuner, only ever seldom used one. I pretty much tune a mixture of the method demonstrated here, harmonics but my best test is strumming an E chord and a D chord because so often one will sound pretty good but the other doesn't so it's about getting that compromise. No guitar I've had is perfect, a tuner is a starting point, then test for that inevitable compromise/balance (the B string is usually the fussy one)
this technique does not work effectively. if you want it 100% you need to tune your guitar using harmonics. if you do not know how to, check out JustinSandercoe's channel, you will fin a video that explains how to do just that. hope this helps.
Actually you really need a combination. Harmonics alone defo don't work and there is pure theory to prove that based on the frequency of each individual string and the relative frequency of fretted notes on one string with open strings. Also take into account the intonation of an instrument and the inherent fault in acoustic guitars on the B-string. Tuning is not always an easy thing for everyone.
well said, as i improve myself as a guitar player i'm learning how to tune my guitar better too, so practice makes perfect when it comes to tuning too
And knowing the particular instrument you're tuning defo helps. It's weird though cos some days I'm on the ball, other days my ears don't work as well.
Actually tuning by harmonics alone does not work as there's a slight discrepancy between the same note at different parts of the guitar. Take A=440Hz (concert pitch, the standard). If you tune your A string to this frequency and then tune the E string so that 5th E string is the same frequency as A open then E will be out when played open. Maybe not by much but will defo be out. Guitar is a tempered instrument with an inherent tuning flaw.Look up the theory.
@joe49790 i know you didnt ask me but yes you are correct..you would have to violate the laws of physics to tune guitar perfect...one main problem is the b string it is a major third higher than the g string...but all other strings are a perfect fourth apart from one another...hope this isnt to crazy sounding
yeah it may be out a tiny bit, but not enough for you to hear though, but it wont be 100% perfect, but still... i have read that theory and its quite interesting :) glad you brought it up tbh
can i tune with an online tuner. u know where u pluck the string online and then tune your guitar to that pitch. would that work the same way as tuninhg it to a piano?
yes, i tune with an online tuner (as my tuner is broken ={) and it works exactly the same way as tuning it with a piano... although i prefer doing it by a piano, but most of my friends prefer it from online tuners and others like the online frequency recordings, i use both online tuners and a piano... it all depends what your used too really.
make sure you have it tuned normally first. then what you want to do is take the bottom E string and tune that to sound the same as your D string, there you have drop D,so instead of having your guitar tuned to E, A, D, G ,B, E, you will have D, A, D, G, B, E. hope this helps, if you need any more help just let me know.
you can also use relativ tuning on the 7th fret on the low E and tune it down, and when the note on thr 7th fret matches the open A you will be in drop D
Excellent. Very clear explanation of relative tuning; I tune by harmonics (classical guitar) or by electronic tuners that usually don't work as well as my ear... But this is a handy method and I use it to check tuning, too. Thanks for probably helping out dozens of usually new guitar owners with a problem not usually nearly so well explained.
guys I'm not even kidding. I'm tuning the 4th string and it snaps right while I'm watching this. It scared the hell outta me. I'm really pissed off, but I like this video. You helped me a lot. On the bright side i have 3 of my strings tuned properly.

ha, you think this is hard? This is easy. Of coarse i can guess from your language that you probably are not the brightest bulb now are you? well if you think tuning that was hard i take it you have never tried to tune a guitar with tremolo.
i can't tune a guitarr and i haven't got any others instruments...so can't you make another video of how to tune a guitarr with help of you ear?? or something :P
