They sent a record out because it is simply the most versatile. you could quite literally use a record anywhere because you just scratch along the grooves to make something vibrate. A cd would be near impossible to understand to other lifeforms. and drawings? forget about it. It would make us look like cavemen.

You also have to fly at least I guess 50000 ship to get all the trash away and how cheep would that be?
