i like this video. people need to stop spedning 200 or 300 dollare on a facking axe!!! this is a relatively thin axe... it will bite deply with a good sharpening. this will hold an edge as well as ny other axe out there! really what youre doing when you buy a hardware store axe is saying im going to pocket this 180$ and im going to make this axe "mine" over the next 2 days with some custom work.. youre buying the axehead though... dont expect the handle and wedge to last.
Is this axe still available, I can't seem to locate it anywhere online or locally. What a great deal for an American made product, and just a few dollars more than the cheap crappy Mexican made axes. Thanks for the great review.
@AhnkoCheeOutdoors Hi thanks for the sub and the comment. I bought mine at Jay's Sporting Goods in Clare, Michigan. You could try googling them and giving them a call. I haven't been there in several months so I am not positive they still carry them :)
I rather like their full size axes, they are good cutters.
Just remember, that if you use a mechanical grinder to sharpen them with, you may heat up the edge and make it more brittle. Slower grindstones, possible with coolant, is better. This goes for sharpening any edge that has to resist impacts afterwards.
I got one of these today from a hardware store and have gathered about a weeks firewood already, I wanted a fancy tomohawk by cold steel etc, but I think these are much better value for money. The top is a little dodgy like you said, but axe is very solid. Mine got light rust after about 5 hours of being wet (like most high carbon steel I guess), so make sure to have some sort of oil.
ps. these would make a devastating home defence weapon!
Specifically a splitting axe. I expect this would be prone to jamming if attempting to make deep (3/4" and more) cross cuts (two hands and body motion into seasoned haerdwood), but is ideal for splitting kindling with an easy to use wide blade.
They also make a really good camping axe with a handle approx 23 inches long (a bit bigger than the GB small forest axe) but still small enough to carry in a pack. It has the normal shape head not the wide edge as shown in the video. Price wise it is about 1/4 of a GB or Wetterling axe and it is still made in sweden (not hand made though but still very good for the money)
hey i typed in bahco and i came to this review. i live in the uk and you probably dont realise how much of an insight this is into your life. liked the bit about "you might aswell just chuck it into the swamp," and "you can use this axe for anything." My wife suggested petting the dog with it...I wouldnt give her an axe after that. or a spoon. liked the review. :D
Hehe, well, no, I never would guessed that this little vid was much of an insight into my life, actually. Glad you like it tho. And if your wife suggested petting the dog with the axe...well...just try to stay on her good side. Thanks for the comment! :)
I bought it at a store called Jay's Sorting Goods. They do have a website, but for some reason I am unable to leave a link in this reply. Just google them and you should find it
I don't know if they are D2 steel. The only info I could find online is that they are "high quality carbon steel." Is there any way to tell by looking at it?
yeahh, that is a good axe, bahco make good tools, but i dont know if the company still is swedish, i think Snap-On buy some of it 2007, but who cares they still making good tools,
Yeh I don't know if Bahco is still swedish owned or not. I know the old name was Sandvik, I think you're right about the Snap-on buyout. But these axesreally are great!!
Thanks for the easygoing useful review. Those European wide and thin axeheads are nice. Thanks again!

Wondering if you know of any places online to purchase this tool. I looked on Amazon, nothing there, any leads would be helpful.
Thanks!

good looking axe for twenty bucks. Are they D2 steel?

karlsefni01 2 years ago
Seroiusly doubt this axe head is D2, it is far too brittle & chippy for the task it's likely a medium carbon alloy steel.
I had a very similar one which was GS & stamped 5150.
Hehe, if it's a pain to sharpen, chips a lot It's D2! ;-)

A lot of Bahco/Sandvik products are still made in Sweden.
I use & love Sandvik 12c27. If you get a chance to use it/ test it, do so. It's the only stainless I'd use myself.
Great video bud.
