I remember when Kid Rock was runnin shit in the Detroit hip hop scene back in the day he was puttin out monthly mixtapes called the Bootleg Series and featuring local rappers from Detroit on them. I think the series went from like 1993-1995. I dont even think 50 was rapping at that time. And I'm sure people were doing it before Kid Rock... thats just the first dude I remember doing it.

Wait.. what? Nobody invented the mixtape, that shit's been around ever since people started releasing instrumentals for their singles. Most mixtapes are just underground and sold locally. I'm assuming he meant he made them mainstream, which isnt anything to be proud of. The whole original purpose of mixtapes was for those that didnt have a beatmaker but had flows.
