I have a better answer: Sit your parents down, proceed to tell them you have cancer and only 3 months to live. When they get shocked and upset, just say "No, just kidding, I'm a drag queen!" ;)
You make a GREAT point about that unless it's a final, major career choice, that you shouldn't need to tell them. And the way you connected it to the hobbies with model planes and stuff was amazing :P
