  • This song is awesome and love the vid

  • I've listened to modest mouse for YEARS and am a huge fan and SOMEHOW I've never heard this amazing song until today. WHAT THE HELL!!!!

  • Woo-oo, woo-oo!

  • @MrRwilcoxen yeah it's fan based

  • "oh what's the use"

  • some fag said this song was raping to his ears

  • Comment removed

  • fuck u! thats how

  • @kfrolf09 Whatever. Enjoy your gangrene.

  • these videos are awesome! i especially like when it slows down like a joke tryin to make another joke laugh HAH HAH. and really, who cares if he was on drugs? look at the work that has come from it...incredible.

  • thanks! i'd love me too if i were someone else. haha

  • I love that part "I held in my hands, a beating heart of a robot."

    thats badass.

    modest mouse is great, man.

i love smoking weed to his shit.

  • Modest Mouse is the ultimate pot band

  • Im sorry to let you in on this but modest mouse has been based off of heroin and the crazy thoughts that isaac brock comes up with when hes fucked up

  • he was a meth addict not heroin... thats why the music was soo damn loud like on lonesome crowded west and shit... if you ever listen wired its actually really rediculous sounding...

  • and how exactly do you know this

  • he doesnt deny it, hes affirmed it many interviews. plus the song its all nice on ice is kinda a dead giveaway...

  • oh ok thanks

  • He was into it all. Lounge is about H.

  • O: Can you talk a bit about "The Good Times Are Killing Me," and how it touches on the band's reputation for over-indulgence?

IB: "There's been a lot of drug abuse. The only drugs I've ever actually written any music on are pills, pot, and alcohol. Acid or coke, you can't write songs on that shit. I kind of regret how much I did drugs. There was a point in time when it seemed like a good plan, but it probably wasn't."

    Exact words of Isaac.

  • You're a fucking idiot. Get your facts right dumb fuck.

  • You an idiot he directly references speed in several songs. There's also other interviews besides that one.

  • Send me the song and lyrics.

  • @ianmamy im sorry but no one cares just saying :D

  • I'm gonna start a band that makes music that sounds overtly drug influenced and then have a bunch of people comment my YouTube videos saying, "he mus have been so hi when riting this my fav" and I'll get on here on my own account and be all, "Fuck you guuuys, I tricked you! I wrote it while sober!" and then the world will crumble because fans of good music will no longer be able to say drugs caused all of it and from that point on, hearing my music will decrease the pleasure of their high.

  • @TheSpoonRooster wuh te fuk?

  • u fucked up ur plan alllllreadyyy

    smart!!!

  • @TheSpoonRooster

thank you for so much win

  • @iphicrates123 *bows* I'm here to please, Iphicrates.

  • @TheSpoonRooster Yeah you do that, meanwhile I will concentrate on working, studying and other things related to having a life....

  • gonna break it gonna wreck it gonna try to make it all make sense!

  • yes, yes :3

  • What's the use.

  • wish the song audio was higher.

  • 3:49 - Greatest guitar riff ever.

  • <33333

    amazing song

    amazing band for sure (:

  • There are so many things wrong with that comment.

  • you don't understand

  • Hey I don't know if I'm preaching to the converted. But have you read the lyrics to this? Existential, futurist it is phenomenal.

  • I agree, nice, one of my fav songs.

  • I was born in the factory far away from the milky teat whats the use! oh whats the use! must funniest lyric alive!

  • lol

  • I love Modest mouse for the lyrics

  • I have to say I can completely relate

  • LOVE this song!

  • made a book for my graphic design course at uni based on this- it's kinda irrelevant to the song or it's lyrics... but shows how much i love the song i guess! :)

  • i love this song-at first i i thought it was boring but it was actually beautifully complex and interesting. I like how modest mouse in this album uses so many points of view as seen espeacially in this song *i cant spell

  • I love this song, it gets so great. This, Education, and the view are some of my biggest faves over the rest.

  • whoah what was she smoking?

  • Everything.

  • modest mouse makes the best road trip music if your by yourself

  • haha. i totally agree. its cause you get to scream the isaac brock scream as loud as you want.

  • @lilgreggy07 Just two weeks ago I took a 12 hour trip, and listened to only MM, RHCP, and Beck.

  • @austinFLAUGH Good combo for driving.

  • @lilgreggy07 forever alone.

  • @lilgreggy07 This is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about.

  • @lilgreggy07 hahaha you just reminded me of a 24 hour round trip i went on like 3 years ago when I listened to this CD on repeat without touching any part of the radio or cd deck the whole time

  • @lilgreggy07 Well.... it would be a long drive for someone with nothing to talk about. Shane, another awesome video! My 2nd favorite from WWDBTSES (Little Motel is incredible!).

  • this song is great high but we were dead is basically the most amazing cd of theirs drunk in my opinion, but ya know long drive is obviously the best.

  • The songs are great while sober.

  • This is true, but when high you have a whole new perspective on some of the songs and get to relate and experience the song in a whole new way. Modest Mouse is brilliant regardless.

  • good point..

  • I've never heard anyone else make comparisons of MM and XTC, but yeah. not that MM is an XTC ripoff or anything. but there are similarities. especially this song.

  • no..

  • Ha,ha ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • please, someone else go back to about page 4 and look at the arguement between ashdefpot and dude421

    fucking hilarious.. "wanking tosspot" haha

  • Been a fan since I was 13 and first hear their ugly casanova Cd.

  • @kateastrofee Ugly was a solo project of Isaac's.

  • this is my ringtone....i love issac<3

  • All And All Out Of All These Statements, Modest Mouse=Dime

  • Right, regardless of this seemingly important conversation being held in regards to Meg White and how the lead singer acts on stage, I love MM, and have been a long-time supporter. Anyone here not a band wagoneer?

  • I love modest mouse :]

    Dude421:

Ahh someone who uses proper insults instead of just swearing like a sailor good for you ;P

  • haha, "wanking tosspot".

  • hat der sänger n sprachfehler?

  • I love the verse at 3:44! <3

  • ive only seen them once live and they were great. they were amazing on baronvonbullshit, and on most youtube clips. although i have heard in the past hes gotten very drunk.

  • I don't see how Meg capable of such behaviour, but Isaac, well, of course he is, he's Isaac, what'd you expect, he's a rock-star, he can do whatever pleases his fancy.

As well is Meg, but Meg is such a little voiced lovely... hmm

  • First, MM sound great live, especially when the sound systems around are set up well. Some stages fuck sound. We all know he loves alcohol and drugs, and can be like that, but who cares? He's a crazy, interesting dude. He has a personality, plays, sings, and writes lyrics better then any in my opinion. Meg, the white stripes...fuck them...they are ok, but nothing special.

  • Just because someone finds out about MM late in the game doesn't mean they're jumping on some bandwagon. Snooty people like you are a detriment to the music industry.

  • I saw modest mouse live, and it was a great set up, and it was disappointing. At one point, the main guy gave his guitar to a stage hand so he could yell into the mike for a song. Worst band I've ever seen live, and I've seen 20+ good, famous bands.

  • the main guy? wow, youre dumb

  • I saw them and thought they were as good as you could ask for. You sound kind of stupid so id like to know what your version of an awesome show is.... dry ice and lazers i'm guessing.

  • My kind of an awesome show is one where you actual feel like your seeing someone live, not just listening to someone do karaoke. Yes, I know they were doing it live, but it seemed more like I was listening to the cd while watching some guys stand awkwardly on stage. There was almost no (and I mean NO) crowd interaction. And I'm just going to ignore the stupid comment.

  • Doom876 never mentioned anything about fans that come in late in the game. He was talking about appreciating the artist's work for it's intrinsic merits, and not letting the behaviour of the artist impede the impression the work itself has on you. Unless this was accidently posted in the wrong spot. Youtube can be retarded.

  • i love MM. Its amazing.

  • oh no, I got nege-comments for saying they were crap live--I guess I must be completely wrong then, because if I don't like Modest Mouse live I must be a wanking tosspot. Their sound was soo good, it was like Golden rock-cum being wedged in me ear. thanks, M.M.! :)

  • Hey dude, I totally agree with you...Modest Mouse are my all time Fave band, but they suck shit live, fukin' horrible. People are fukin' idiots, they think if they like a band they have to drink the kool-aid, and every band they like is SOOOOO fukin' great live...what a bunch of sheep...

  • Aye, they're good in the studio-- and back in mid-90s they sounded better live--sure they were only a couple of kids straight out of Issaquah, but they really felt the vies. I mean, they played a fuckin great "Dramamine" for 9 years--it sounded straight off of of their Lonesome album, but recently the old songs they play is just to please their fans... I know most the only old shit they play is "Trailer Trash", "Doin' the Cockroach" and "Styrofoam Boots".. it doesn't sound like it used to.

  • and ur a wanking tosspot too thinking that ur opinion is 100% right, i particularly like MM live , but im not gonna say ur a fucking idiot bacause u think otherwise(even though you may be a fucking idiot)

  • Wow, what a clever mechanism you employed there...you called me a fucking idiot(how original) by not calling me a fucking idiot. Can you teach me how to be so flippant and clever with my word play? Folks, I think we may be in the presence of a genius(did you like how used sarcasm there? See, I can clever and flippant too, aren't I funny and original?) Let me guess, not one band you like is trash live? I bet there all just fuckin' awesome...what a cipher you are...

  • I've only seen Modest Mouse live in the older shows and I must say, they were fucking awesome. I haven't bother with their latest shows because all the ticket costs are like waaaay out of my price range. Hearing other people saying that they suck live now... is quite shitty.

  • Whatever you say, Joseph Smith.

  • This is a year old; need time to update!

I like Youtube: as many people you can, and will piss off, nothing will happen. Ah, ha.

  • actually, using sarcasm on the internet does make u a wanking tosspot, whatever the hell that is, i just hope its an insult in whatever godforsaken language you speak

  • You must be the smartest, and most musically-inclined human in existence. I'm not being sarcastic; I don't even know what that word means. "Sarcastic"? Never heard of such rubbish. Oh, and Modest Mouse are brilliant live—better than the Smiths and X when it comes to being on-stage. Matter fact, I think ever-thing Brock has ever written in song is justifiable poetic adagery. I never knew why I made such a juvenile attack on 'em, maybe I was wicked fizzy, who knows? Apologies, My Lord.

  • actually,

    fuck you

  • sorry i made you so angry with a youtube comment, my bad

  • Dude421 you are my hero

that's the first time i've seen wit used on youtube

  • Sarcasm or not, it feels good to be praised...

even if it's just for as long as the kratom's half-life lingers in my small intestine.

I'm off to tom at girls taking showers with their sheep, guess I'll read ya when I read ya.

    Slàinte. :L craig

  • ...

    I think I love you...

  • Two pounds.

  • very true

  • I love Modest Mouse. I'm tryin' to get ahold of their older stuff. It's alot more dificult in Australia. Even the Aussie Ebay site bearly has any of their older stuff. I can only get ahold of their latest two albums.

  • Boo. I prefer their old stuff to their newer stuff.

  • thats his opinion and he's allowed to say it. To be honest a lot of their old stuff are really realy really good. And at one point i didn't like their old stuff and only favored WWDBTSES and GNFPWLB, but as time progressed i started to love TLCW and other assorted old ones.

  • Um... s/he didn't even say whether s/he preferred the older stuff to the newer stuff, s/he was just saying how s/he couldn't get a hold of the old stuff. Which is pity; hence the "boo". Really read what someone is replying to before you rush to someone's... defense. It potentially could not be needed.

  • Do you think you're cool because you use acronyms?

  • Yes ^_^

  • lk, ttly! hw cld we nt b?

  • do they do this song live?

  • There best album is def the lonesome crowded west...I like their new shit, but not as much as their old stuff(not enough change ups...their old stuff went all over the place(in a good way))...

  • p.s. regardless of what style it is, it still kicks ass

  • this song is hella good.

  • love your name :)

  • MM's style may have changed over the years, but that doesn't mean that their new music isn't just as good as their old music. Before the Ship Even Sank is a masterpiece

  • they have complex lyrics and music.... but live, their lyrics are still there but I'm not so sure about being complex. they're punk rock live but Isaac is a little too much for me out there if I were up front, so I stay in the back so I can hear everything he says.

i've seen them live before when i was completely in the front and the whole concert was static and little sound glimses from songs I knew but I couldn't hear very well.

  • acoustics ftl?

  • sound was crap. ftl?

  • true

  • i more or less see them making the real video about a robot holding stupid humans hostages while trying to explain it's self

  • don't be haters!

    great song

    great band

  • As a machinery geek, I dig the fact they managed to make their song sound like a factory. They lyrics get in the way of the mechanical music, but the industrial imagery in it is pretty cool.

  • I´ve told this on another MM song. Boys, if you like that band, try XTC, you will love them. My word of honour.

  • if modest mouse were a retro band from the 80's that conformed to the demands of coperate means of production

but good thing they arent anything like xtc

modest is different, engenious ,and lively i am glad about that

  • shanepdonnelly ftw??

  • I love this song. Good video.

  • great song, love the rickshaw parts

  • My favorite song from the album, thanks for posting it!!

  • rickshaw

  • OH, it's always gotta be so modern all the time. Fact of the matter is, just all modern gets old to me some of the time. Its a great pair up of the lyrics and rythm with some of the footage of what your grandparents might have done in the better days of this country, where people actually worked towards a goal that shaped this country for your modern lifestyle. It's pretty cool to see some of that footage being used.

  • Ya know this song really reminds me of the movie of Tetsuo the Iron man

  • tight! you nailed this man! this song is one of their best in my opinion, you got a good tast in music my friend!

  • I agree. The person who made this video needs to ditch the 50's industry imagery, and perhaps try something more...modern? And if your making videos on a PC then it automatically isnt as good as it could be(honestly, media editing is one of mac's few fine points, so much so that all pro media editing is done on macs.

  • I have a mac, but it's just a Powerbook. I'm not gonna do any video editing on a Mac until I get a new MacBook for college next year.

  • ehh. it's all right. kudos still, though.

  • Nothin' ruins a song quite like public domain footage from the 50s

  • I strongly disagree, comrade.

  • pretty cool

  • The guitar hook during the verse reminds me of machines, or a continuous movement, which is what I think they were aiming for.

  • what editing prog do you use???

reply quickly ty. . . (MM is amazing gunna see them in liek 5 days, there sint a song i dont think is amazing)

  • Windows Movie Maker.

  • sweet music.

  • picture a 2 hr long, midnight drive from chicago to central illinois, and waking up to this song. i thought i was slipped some insane drug, but when i really woke up, i realized i loved it haha. modest mouse is amazing.

  • OMG I love this Song

ITs Loads CRAZY AND I LOVE IT

  • The two signature notes from Learning to Fly are similar to one of Steam Engenius's hooks...but the rest is a mash of funk and punk. Overall, brilliant guitar work...it's manic, bordering on rage...but still fun.

  • is it just me or does the little guitar sound just like learning to fly by pink floyd.

  • Wow, I never noticed that until you pointed it out. But it does.

  • yea dashboard is awsome

  • there are deffinally some songs i like on the new cd, but i was pretty dissappointed. i hate to say it but i just dont think its as good as good news, moon, long drive, or lonesome

  • Like a joke tryin' to make another joke laugh haha.

    The album is amazing.

  • the song is called Steam Engenius...

  • for sure it amazing.. i already downloaded the whole CD, i just couldn't wait.. i'm still going to buy it when it comes out though, because i don't want to STEAL from MODEST MOUSE!! I thought it was almost like this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about meets moon and antarctica/ good news... anyways, every single song is AMAZING!

  • this is great, it makes me really excited for the album, i havnt heard the leak yet, only dashboard, which i wasnt extatic about, but this song is great

oh and im pretty sure its called "Streaming Genius"

I remember reading an interview with isaac a couple months ago aobut this song saying it was aobut a robotic massiyah (sp?)
