Hey cat. cats are cool, and dogs drool. anyway. just yesterday I brought home a 99 1200 sporty. Its awesome, really low miles. Really decent price. Cobalt blue.
Hey man, congrats on your new bike. Wish I could afford one. Been on disability for a while now. I do have a great looking bike though just not that one. Enjoy.
@cminsel83 I've owned 8 different Hardleys and still own a '03 100th Anniversary Ultra Classic. Like I said....everyone makes mistakes....much like your parents did.
JLchevz... buy the 1200 XLC (custom)... the only time you notice the difference between a 883 or a 1200 is when you get on the throttle hard... and more importanly when you decide to trade it in or sell it... i bought my used 1996 xlc 7 yrs ago for $7,500.00. I just traded it in and got $5,644.(not bad for a 14yr old bike) I did keep the bike in excelent shape and updated over the yrs.... never gave me a bit of problems. 135mph in the 1/4 mile on a 1200...70 mph on a 883 in the 1/4 mile.
dont buy a 883, get the 1200. I owend a `1200 XLC for about 7 yrs...bought it for $7,500...traded it in on a 2007 Vrod
limited edition #286 of 1400. I loved my sportster...they have more horse power than the big bikes.. sportster 1200 has 68-72 bhp. soft tails and baggers etc.. have only 55 bhp. So when some other harley owner says something stupid like its a girls bike...race for titles. hmm..the 883...maybe a girls bike..LOL
Looks good. I ride a lowered 883 converted up to a 1212cc, with my 883 gearing, and it flat out moves from a light. Only thing I'm not crazy about are those auto turn signals, and a hard ass seat, but I'll never ride Jap. again. I wanted a NightTrain, but had a Sportster pocketbook, and I not really a live to ride, ride to live biker anyway.
Yeah, the 883 is still no slouch. They can run high 13s quarter mile with a few simple mods. That is still faster than 95% of the cars on the road. The 1200, on the other hand, can run mid 11s with similar mods.
They're A bit heavier to ride with the clutch and that but i'm sure it's fine if you know how to use it :)
And For me it's not gonna matter so much how much torque is in it because here in Europe you cant have more than 35 horsepower until you're 20 ( soon to be 24 ) so if i get one it'l still feel small :D
Beautiful bike man! I ride a customized 883 Sportster. They are far from a chick bike. One of the most popular Harleys ever made, been producing them for over 50 years now. I love my Sportster.
For those of you who claim that a Sportster is a "chick bike", just search for Harley Sportster on Youtube and see how many videos there are of "chicks" riding Sportsters.
Are these bikes reliable for daily driving or are they only for weekend riding? Are they low maintenance or do you have to working on them all the time? I've heard that the engine starts leaking after a few months is this true? I'm interested in one but reliabilty and maintenance are some of the first things I consider.
First off, you can use Sportsters for both daily and weekend driving. Second, the reliability and maintenance of Harleys has improved over the years. From 1969-1981, AMF owned Harley and they only thing AMF cared about was quantity, not quality. That is what tarnished the Harley name cause bikes would break after a couple of months. Even brand new bikes were pulled off the delivery trailer would leak oil and bolts would be loose. After Harley bought back the name, their reliability got better
I'm looking to buy my first Harley, and of course I have fallen in love with the Sportster 1200C. I'm a pretty big guy, I'm 6'2 and I weigh in at 280 pounds. Do I need to go to a bigger engine, or could this be the bike for me? How about if I get down to around 200?
Thanks for the input, I was at Mike's today and I took one look at the Sportsters in person and I knew it wouldn't cut it. I did, however, fall in love with a Dyna Superglide Custom, its been modified with new straight pipes and the bars are raised. Be on the lookout for a video of it in the next months.
Nice bare bones bike like the Ol' Sporty is a cool ride. I have a 2000 1200 Custom and always enjoy being out on the 2 lane with it. Keep It In The Wind ;)
sportsters are respectable bikes besides, girls cant tell the difference, but the new rubber engine mounts don't make them as happy when they ride anymore...
I started with a sportster and kicked her to the curb for a dyna lowrider much better ride. Oh I forgot to mention I am a female 2004 and after are much better not as much vib. other ways to get that we must not crash the bike lol....
Hey, 'Extra'...these bikes will out-handle and out-brake (2004 onwards) any of the standard overweight 'Cruiser' type Harley. Well, the 1200R will. Higher top-end, too. I'll bet that you run some superannuated jap bike, and only dream of owning a Harley! Probably a car driver. You twisted, cynical sod! 17000?...that's probably the number of brain cells you have.
Actually the 1200 Sportsers from 1998 to 2003 were probably a little better handling in my opinion but the 04 to 08 are great as well and I do like the brakes on the 04 upwards a little better than earlier models.
Thinking very seriously about getting one of these. I have a Volusia and have had it for five yrs. with no complaints except it needs a taller 5th. gear. How is the Sportster on the freeway at 70mph as far as gear ratio? By the way, your bike looks great and sounds great.
The 1200 Sportsters cruise at their very best between 70 and 80 mph with a lot left in them. Sell the Volusia and get the 1200 Custom Sportster XL. Get some screamin eagle pipes, nice leather saddle bags, sissy bar and windshield and you will be a happy biker for a very long time.
Nice man, been looking at the same bike. Was wondering if you had to pay MSRP for it? I'm about to go the dealer and wondering if you could let me know what to expect. Thanks.
Yeah, I just walked in and pointed at the bike and said " Gimme" pretty much. I had the flu that day . the salesman walked up and said "You're approved, let's do the paperwork" and I rode away a half hour later.I think the bike was stickered at $9695.00.. Probably could have done better, but.... good luck.... Get One!
Nice Sporty bro.

is there a big acceleration speed difference betw the 883 and 1200?
ITbiker2020 3 years ago
Yeah, the difference is huge. Basically the difference between a 600cc and 1000cc sport bike.
Fearnight 3 years ago
can the 883 beable to get up to speed on the highways no problem, or will it feel like struggling while running at hw speeds???

Yeah its wicked sick for you guys... we have the exact opposite when it comes to Drinking/Driving..
You guys have 16 for driving.. we have for drinking... you got 21 for drinking.. we have for driving :P
And also you guys got so much easier to actually get the license... we have to do so many tests !!..
