i can now see the pig picture on the 10 comandments! he broke it down to wear i understand it! damn man! i done broke alot of them but i say my payers err night and i hope to go to heaven! i would repent but i dont wanna feel like im taking bad advantage of godnd i kno that if i repent to soon im might not live up to my promise but l luv god!!
Didn't moses murder a slaver? And as for the "moral code" in the bible do you think it is right to force a women to marry the guy that raped her? (OT) Or how about genocide? Stoning of homosexuals to death? Dashing midanites babies on rocks.. I think you can forget "biblical morality" for it is evil.
If I intentionally kill a person am I then guilty of breaking the commandment "Thy shalt not commit murder" or do the commandments have get out clauses exemptions if you will , if your reply includes the word illegal who's legality has precedence.
I respect that, I disagree though. I do so on the ground that we have these rules, yet no one seems to be able to keep. Because if this to me it would seem that they come from something outside of us. What is that something is the question. (Still working on that answer myself.)
I'm just curious. Leaving aside the commandments that relate to God, since you are not a believer, do you believe the rest of them which relate to how we treat our fellow man are good and worth while rules to live by?
Why did God give the Ten Commandments to Moses? And why was it done at that particular time in history? Why not earlier or later? And how were people judged before the Ten Commandments?
Excellent questions. I'll do my best with them. I believe the first three questions are all tied to the fact that God was establishing Israel as a nation and getting them ready to enter the promised land. There were many things that were needed to prepare this people to function as a society and the law addressed those issues.
He did not however want them to be just any society or any nation, but rather a people who would be his and would be called by his name. This required some very high standards, but it also required a way to deal with the fact that humans would often fail to meet those standards.
As for how people were judged before the law. Well, I have several thoughts about that. One would be the fact that according to Romans, a certain sense of right and wrong is instinctive to our nature, but sadly, since the fall, so is sin. We also must consider the fact that prior to the law, God often communicated with people directly and told them what he wanted. So people were not completely ignorant of God.
We can see in Genesis that God warned Cain about falling into sin and we can see from many other places that God called certain things wicked and that he counted Abraham's faith as righteousness. Therefore, implying he had sin that needed to be covered. Also, Joseph knew it would be wicked to sleep with Potiphar's wife, so it's clear there was sin and that people knew something about it.
Finally, in Romans 5, Paul tells us there was sin in the world from Adam to Moses, even though those people did not sin by breaking a specific command as did the people after Moses and therefore, death reigned in those people as well.
Very good video, Mike. I'm guilty of putting TV over Bible-study time, certainly. It does not place a relationship with God in first place, so I try to make "dates" with God. Daily "dates" like one would with a person. It helps as a thought provoking kick in my rear. Once I get there, I realize how I would rather be there, with him, rather than anywhere else. What do you think about working on the Sabbath?
Well, keeping in mind that under the new covenant we are under grace, the Sabbath becomes a personal thing between God and man. (Colossians 2:16-17) As Jesus says the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Therefore, we have the responsibility to decide upon a day, between us and God, on which we will not work, but we will spend extra time with God.
Thank you, Mike. I recall my grandfather refusing to do any work on Sunday, preparing all food before hand, back then it was work day to day, just to give the day to God. Today it has changed and it has given me pause as to why. He and his wife both held to that very firmly, even with all those kids to feed!

God's authority has precedence, but he also grants authority to the state.

Well, we are all entitled to our opinions and as long as we don't mock each other for our differences, I have no problem with anyone expressing them.

Even as a deist I always thought the Ten Commandments just make sense. It's sad God had to point them out to us.
