hangshimkim: anyone who goes beyond Wikipedia knows the song was composed originally in portuguese as "Os Grilos" by Marcos and Paulo Sérgio Valle, by 1964... It may have had its English version sung by Astrud Gilberto in 1965, by Marcos in 1968 or whatever, but, again, anyone going beyond Wikipedia knows that Astrud was not a composer herself. It usually happened when Americans became interested in bossa-nova that songs in portuguese were THEN translated to English and not the opposite...

Sorry to say it, but this woman should know who the composer of the song she's ripping off is! It's certainly not Astrud Gilberto (although she may have sung it as well). It's Marcos Valle and it appears on his record from 1968 called Samba '68. Please do your homework and show some respect, specially if you're going to rip off somebody else!

@alombo67 Haha, sorry to say, but, you're WRONG!!!! In 1965 Astrud Gilberto recorded and released the song. The song didn't become popular till 1967 when Marcos Valle COVERED the single and released it himself. His version was far more successful than the original. He re-wrote the lyrics in Portuguese and gave the song a more samba sound. Please do YOUR homework before you start mouthing off like you know what you're talking about.

She's clearly not lipsynching because of the speed, or she wouldn't be able to lipsynch it (think, people!).

Fofinho has it - it's complex and time-consuming to set up the correct equipment for live performances (it's not just a case of sticking a camera on her - try it with a camcorder and see) so most shows don't bother for just one or two songs. TOTP only has a couple of real live performances a show because of this - it would be impractical to do them all live.

i don't deny she's a great singer (my favourite spice girl in fact) but she wasn't lipsyncing because of the speed of the song. if the song is too fast for her to sing, then how could she have recorded it in the first place? i think she lipped because she had to dance

That shouldn't be an excuse. I'm tired of artist hiding behind that reason. She has toured plenty of times with the Spice Girls and she had to use live vocals. She can sing, but I think she was just lazy. I still love her though

@bbukfan absolutely not, you could sing live if you wished(robbie williams never ever lip synched-dont like his music but he sang live) as did many credible artists/mostly indie bands, yeah lots of people mimed but that was their choice, totp did not "demand" it.

I agree with you 100%. I went to see Pink in Glasgow and she sang everything live - being upside down and writhing about in a net and at one point she was hanging from a massive ribbon thing for the finale and she still did it live. Although, TOTP do have a weird thing about artists lip synching.

oh common ppl, it's the dance and singing is also an ART!!! ppl can always modify the dance a bit. And just another comment for ppl down there who says Emma lip syncing the answer is NO. She is a PRO singer and she keeps her voice well. And i also believe that Emma has a better sense of geography that those of TYPICAL AMERICANS... Why are you so complicated?! She didn't sing live here not because she wants to, but as most of the singers do nowadays, they don't sing live in TV Shows, because it's almost impossible. They can't have the equipment necessary to do live music on TV.

And she knows where Brazil is, but the question was "where is this sound from?" she answered "from south america". And it's true! Not only Brazil has this exotic sounds.
