  • Can you do sea battles on the demo?

  • hey my demo isn't like that... i just can do tutorial and a battle... ??

  • Oh, I wish there was a game made after the movie. Does anyone of you guys know a game with its priority on naval battles?

  • where did you get the demo

  • In my Empire Total Wat I use Acheron and Surprise as a third rate ship of the line

    is cool

  • HMS Surprise would never have been able to take out the mainmast of a Constitution class frigate with one broadside.

  • My only complaint is about something you can't change playing that game. The French flag in Empire: Total War is pre-French Revolution. Obviously the movie (and books) are set in the Napoleonic Era. If such a movie had been made in Napoleon: Total War, the flag would have been more accurate.

That having been said, everything else is completely awesome.

  • @ShenanigansOHooligan In the Total War games you can change just about any graphic you want. I learned to mod Rome: Total War, and changed African Elephants into Indian ones. Just learn to mod, or download a mod with the correct flag. :) twcenter dot net my friend.

  • @Tsarevna303 I'm not the one who made it, and I wouldn't mod games even if I had the necessary software. I was merely pointing out that the easiest way to do something in the Napoleonic Era would be to use the game set in said era.

  • @Tsarevna303 I actually happen to have both Empire and Napoleon, so if I wanted to do such a thing, I'd probably just play Napoleon, though neither is installed at the moment. (They were too distracting during NaNoWriMo, so I took them off, but I haven't gotten the time to reload them yet.

I can mod certain things for Sims 1&2, but beyond that, I've never really had much interest in doing so. (Most other games don't require decor that actually matches...)

  • how he make in 2:52 he watch into ship board . And can i do in Napoleon total war the same too?

  • @ShowYourWorking They didnt want to bog everyone down with having to go back and forth (tack i think its called), so they basically made it so you will go much slower when going against the wind, but if you want you can tack. Keep in mind this is not sea battles only game, its also land battles. And its a great game!

  • Wow, how'd you get the view from the gun deck like that?

  • @andyhwang2009 All Chinese underestimate you British because of British drug cartel.

  • Where can i buy this game, or downoad... plz tell me.. nice game, looks awesome! :D

  • WHAT! THAT LOOKS REAL!!!!!!!!

  • how do you get the gun deck view?

  • I had my go at recreating Master and Commander: a Sixth Rate versus a Fifth. I won! All i did was take out her rigging early on, out maneuver her, and attack her stern.

  • Bad guys won

  • Comment removed

  • Actually, the Santisima Trinidad was a four-decker. There were quite a few 3-deck ships operating during the Napoleonic Wars.

  • The water is the best iv seen so far in any game.

  • Suprise only had one gun deck, she's a sixth rate, not a 4rt in the ship of line.

  • In this battle it's two 3rd rate ships, but HMS Surprise actually is a frigate 6th rate and the Acheron is a frigate 5th rate.

  • so whats this 6th, 5th and 4th rate stuff about

    im intreged

  • @Hoboman145 - check wikipedia using those key words for a full explanation. Simply put they were a RN system for nominally and indicatively "rating" and thus classifying a ship's gun power. A 6th Rate was a small frigate [28-30 guns - like the Surprise], a 5th Rate [35-40] etc. up to a 1st Rate [120+] - like the Victory or Agamennon.

  • ok thanks i get it now cheers man

  • Actually, a first rate began at anywhere from 78 to 100 guns, depending on the year (ships got larger over time). During the Napoleonic Wars, a First Rate started at 100 guns

  • @Hoboman145 all the ships that are classed as frigates are given a rate the higher the rate the smaller it is.from 4th rates and onwards they are called ships of the line(of battle)e.g a 1st rate would be called a first rate ship of the line

  • @HSPCVIDEO yeah, in the battle, the Suprise went against a 4th rate, but in that game its damn near impossible to beat at 4th rate with a 6th rate

  • first rate ships of the line such as the victory have/had 2 ft thick solid oak hulls thats 60cm, a cannon ball cant go thought that, that easily, u'll have to get up quite close to even get half way

  • I honestly like the ship battles in Sid Mier's pirates much better. If only they could combine the land battles from this game and the sea battles from sid miers

  • looks very cool - -but ... no pair of square-rigged frigates could go in circles like that; one or the other would lose headway and fall off, possibly exposing the vulnerable stern in the process like at 3:50 -- bad move, you have to close with the enemy and board eventually, these short-range cannonades aren't even taking out any rigging - ha, the larger frigate is heeling over - so, these guys were shooting to sink, not to take as a prize? Doesn't sound like Aubrey...

  • this was from the demo, full game are better, but it still a game, not a simulator

  • fair enoough, still looks fun, I was just trying to take the "savvy" I'd picked up from the novels re sea warfare to critique the game in the clip -- sorry if was tendentious-- you read enough M&C and you start ot think in terms of weather-gage -- probably also if you play the game, I bet --

Nothing beats the scene in the movie when they take the first volley, out of the fog - my wife and I were staggered - good CGI cannonballs, and sound of round shot going past - yow!

    Cheers

  • @SupernalOne you obviously know your boats

  • @WilliamGreenHALL

Only from reading the entire Master & Commander series 3 times - and I'm still not sure what a ship's knees are :)

  • @SupernalOne 1 year old comment, however you took it to seriously, it's a game not a simulator

  • @MMOTotal

oh sure, the joke is on me, I'm taking it too seriously, I know it -- I've read the entire series three times over the years, and enjoy getting into nautical tactics of engagement - but sure, it's a game, and they're novels --

still, for more realistic game play these ship simulacra should work per rules of sailing - they're powered by wind not steam so they shouldn't be able to go in endless circles - so " the weather gage" etc would make a difference - more skill needed :)

  • Vasa? i thought the Vasa sinked after

sailing the first time not far away of the

    port...

they build the gunports to near to the water and the water got in the ship

    and it sinked.

    ...sry for my worse english...

  • DO YOU WANT NAPOLEON TO BE YOUR KING?!

  • Comment removed

  • dis video reminds me of pirates of the caribbean 3 when the flying dutchman and the black pearl are fightin on the whirpool

  • yeah, nice video, nice battle

  • You wouldent want to head alongside her, go forward you present a much slimer target. Like Nelson go round behind and rake her 70% you'll damage her steering which means easy target as shes a dead fish. Bu dont take my word for it i'm only a reenactor ;-)

  • @StueyLestrange Yes but, Nelson had the advantage of being in the Victory when he did that and the Victory had a very thick hull(being a first rate and all).On most ships, the cannon balls would go right through the front, thus meaning your getting raked to :P

  • For anyone who makes more Master & Commander videos, they ought to know that HMS Surprise was a 28-gun sixth-rate frigate, and the Acheron was basically of the same class as USS Constitution. That's what made Jack Aubrey's victory so epic; he fought a much heavier, faster, and longer-ranged ship, and took her a prize.

  • i thought the Acheron was a razee'd line of battle ship like the HMS Indefatigable, but nevertheless your point is well-taken, her scantlings and armament were certainly similar to Old Ironsides. Its a shame that this action was not canonical because it would eclipse the defeat of the Cacafuego, the cutting out of the Diane and the defeat of Linois in the Indian Ocean as the seminal act of Jack's career - though doubtless he would point to his service at Aboukir Bay as the high point.

  • Well, you're obviously more familiar with the Aubrey novels (I've only ever seen the movie). However, from what I've seen and read about USS Constitution and the other "24-pounder frigates" that the early U.S. Navy relied upon, compared with what they talk about in the film (she's said to be "Yankee-built), then it seems as though the Acheron is definitely a 44-gun frigate.

But yeah, it's great to see Aubrey fictitiously invent what would later be known as the Q-ship, itself a Royal Navy design

  • Oh, also, Empire: Total War has some pretty good info on just about every historical unit type in the game. :-)

  • you're right - I just watched the scene where those seaman present Jack with the model of the ship. i guess since the French never explicitly built a 44 gun fifth rate class i assumed they razee'd it. i have empire but my computer sucks (for gaming) and as such I don't play it often. cheers

  • No problem mate. Someday I may read the O'Brien novels... ;-)

  • the movie while quite good glossed over several things as you pointed out above and the fact that the movie was the first and 5th book in the series with bits and pieces books 2 thru 4 thrown in for good storyline, giving the midshipman"his first command" the raft with the lanterns

  • Turned into a bit of a dog fight there. Same principle I suppose.

Looks to me like he went down because he had his leeward gun ports open and heeled over too much as he was gettting more wind as he turned?

  • I like to wreck the enemies masts and then circle and fire at my pleasure :)

  • I like the way she capsizes like a dinghy

  • should have mooved to board her and take her as a prize

  • woohoo TURNING FIGHT!!! GO HMS SURPRISE!!!

  • And getting raked on the stern means nothing I suppose.

  • lol, her rudder would prob be shot away

  • nothin like it!

  • Very well made video! I'm finding more enjoyment from watching ETW naval battles than playing them at this point...I'm quite bad at them, to be honest, but they're so beautifully rendered, I find it impossible not to enjoy watching them.

    Superb video, and great battle

  • a good idea what to do is play a battle, save your battle replay, and then watch it listening to ur fav battle music and enjoy :)

  • very slow, without action

  • Oh and the ships are moving far too quickly.

  • The graphics on the water are very nice but there is nowhere near enough smoke created when the cannons fire and i dont like the way the shots are shown as white lines across the screen when fired. Also the decks when shown from the inside look really bare and they arent crowded enough. It doesnt fully capture the feel of a mid 18th century sea battle.

  • agree

  • there are mods that make the smoke more real.

  • nice playing man

  • what faction has the best navy in the game?

  • i guess english , they had the ship of the line, the most powerfull one at that time

  • US BRITS NO DOUBT XD

I don't know, so buy the game and find out yourself.

  • all but you just choose you side... i chose sweden :D

  • that means you get the Vasa

  • Hey HMS Surprise which was Capt Aubrey's ship was a single decker with a mere 22 guns. I think you are using a ship too big to be considered HMS surprise. Plus the Acheron was a 44 gun frigate which again is underrepresentated by this short video ;-). Just my 2 cents anyway.

  • OK, just one cent of me added... the Surprise was a 28-gun frigate, not 22. :-)

  • realy nice video 5/5 but how did you get the names???

  • heey, I've got the game, but how the hell do you look inside the ship?? :p

  • press the insert key on the desktop when you have the ship marked

  • thx dude :D

  • The physics on this game are beautiful! Anyone know the system requirements? Don't reckon my old lash-up would be able to handle it...

  • Any other British have noticed this? Just realised that one of the bugs/errors of this games, displayed on this demo, is that the British ships are flying the Red Ensign. This Royal Navy standard is flown for Merchant shipping purposes. The White Ensign is what would have been flown on all Ships of the Line, including HMS Surprise.

  • There's mod that replaces [some of] the flag inaccuracies.

  • is this game worth buying?

  • yes absolut, it have a lots of buggs right now, but CA are working on major bugg fixer and shall release more patches after that. so the game will be great, but is great game right now.

  • wondering if the next total war there going be a air battle it be cool if there is

  • the surprise was a 24 gun frigate and the acheron was a 44 gun frigate, it was built in america, the only country to make "super frigates"

  • but the acheron is a napoleonic boat (after the french revolution)

  • can someone pls tell me the settings i have to put this on to make it not lag?!?!?!?

  • i'm pretty sure the hms victory was a sixth rate ship dude

  • Hms Victory was a 1 rate, and have nothing to do with this movie :D

  • oh wait i was thinking hms surprise my bad

  • I did a replica of the master and commander battle, using two fifth rates (one to a team) but I still lost. naval battles are damn hard... I just can't figure them out...

  • little trick that you can modify according to cirumstances..stand still..let them attackeven if they have wind..fire at sails..tillthey are sanding ducks..face their stern or front and bombard men or the ship according to your greed

  • I had a similar problem with the demo, took about a billion years (I may be exagerating a tad... ;)) to load the main menu and load battles, I'm happy to say it's VASTLY improved in the full game (still not lightning quick but thats cos my PC is a little out of date ;))

  • lol empire total war is the first total war game where you can play sea battles lol

  • my comps a dual core (two 3.1g=6.2g processor) with a great graphics card but the demo still doesn't work at peak efficiency even on low settings. Could it be that it doesn't support dual cores? I haven't checked whether its using both cores for it yet, cause on games like CoH i usually set it to one and it runs alot better, even on high graphics. Any ideas?

  • First off all you can't say you're processor is running @ 6,2 gHz. You have 2 cores running @ 3,1 gHz, and can't combine them :)

And please link your graphic cards name, so i can take a better look @ it :)

  • dont worry, the demo inst so good and not all the graphics or animations were included...

  • how did you get inside the ship?!?!?

  • You select the ship and press the insert key.

  • 5/5 from me because I saw people falling into the water :)

  • don't worry i never win neighter it hard lolz

  • can you jump from one ship to aother and fight melee?

  • yes

  • Are there marines and stuff on the boats, and if so, do they like fire upon the enemy ships with there muskets?

  • yes it are, when you get close to enemy ship the marines will fire there mustkets on the enemy ship,

  • Yes.

  • 2.53 Ghz intel duo processer, 4 gb of ram, 256mb ATI radeon 3470 graphics card (Vista ultimate), how will empire Total War go with those specs?

  • can't get any better i think

  • for real you gpu is a bit weak so it could lagg but just on high settings probably

  • mine lags on medium with the demo but only after a period of time on low it works fine

  • It can get better, but he should be fine.

  • u know wat 1st they fought paralel 2nd when u seen inside there was a cannon ball smashing through and the guys near the ball didnt even do anything 3rd those guys were stifff as if they were robots 4 the british boarded the frenchies try to make it better plz i rate is 8 1/2 / 10 no offense

  • Comment removed

  • How did you get inside of the ship?

  • press "insert"

  • How'd you customize the battle, with those ships?

  • Great video btw, really enjoyable and great quality

  • Press the "Insert" key to go to a unit's eye view - looks really cool in land battles! You get a FPS view :P

  • because youneed abetterprocessor

  • why is the demo not running on my PC :( ?!?!?

i´ve got a Windows Vista Laptop (1024mb Graphiccard, and only a intel core duo 2.0 GH processor..plls help ^^

  • nice! i love how u got into te ship like that. how did u do that?

  • Hilarious! outta nowhere a message about ur friend playing the demo pops up! Plus, why didnt you board their ship???

  • Comment removed

  • Man, i freaked out when i saw the demo was out and started to download right away. Who gives a crap if the DEMO is missing sound, you get to control the ships, have the battle, sink the ships. Thats all i care about. :)

  • The demo has had LOADS of problems, but the full game won't be crap like the demo, definatly. plus there will be loads of patches for realism

  • Did read that the first patch are the same day the game is relesed! and yes..demo have a lots of problem. speciall sound problem..they forgott to put in half of the sound in the demo! lol

  • lol

  • how did you get inside hull-camera?

  • just press the insert key

  • How did you dothis on the demo??

  • is there large splinters flying everywhere?

  • yes, wood that have been cracked

  • Show us what happens when they collide!! :)

  • Not mutch at all, not even a collide sound.

  • i got a collide sound, alot of peoples demos are missing random sound files

  • when my men march you cant here the footsteps but the cavalry can be heard from a distance is it the same for you?

  • I dont have marshsound either, lots of stuff missing.

  • ok just wondering

  • OMG! U named it Surprise! LOL. What an awesome video! This has got to be my favourite ETW video so far.

  • thanks
