I guess this was a performance from one of Rosie's cruises. She does a great job - especially love that last note. I haven't loved all the vids I've seen of her but this one and "How Lucky Can You Get" are probably my favorites. Oh, and the anecdote she tells at Don't Quit Your Night Job is a riot.
it's Rosie's Gay and Family cruise (or something along the lines of that), so the people in the audience are 'queer'. I assume that is what makes it funny, anyway.
Actually Julia HAS played Velma, in college. I went to Syracuse University with her and she played Velma in a Drama Department production as was VERY good.
Yeah, you know, when I saw her in Wicked I really didn't like her either, but then I got to know her in The Wild Party and Lennon and such and now I have a lot more respect for her in Wicked. I think that her version of Elphaba is very much her own and very unique now... it just took me some time to get used to her style.
her elphaba style is SO different from the others, so it does take a while to get used to. i think she was trying in ALL that she did to be reminiscent of MArgeret Hamilton's role of the wicked witch, and it showed, i think.
Hmm... I agree that she is very different (which in the end is wonderful, cuz I get tired of all the Elphabas trying to be like each other), but I have to say I didn't really see Margaret Hamilton in her portrayal of Elphaba at all.
its all in the little things (and its strongest in No GOod Deed), like the little shrieking sound on some of her notes, her tendency to gesture with crooked fingers, and strongly in her facial expresssions. and i cant help but think if the character that margaret hamilton created ever sang, it would sound either like julia( or eden) since julias sound in wicked is so different than her other sounds, but it is in the subtle nuances of the character.
i do like the nasal quality that sho brings in, but sho always sounded incredibly young to me (understandably since she just came off of hairspray) and that works for her in the 1st act, but against her in the 2nd. i think she sounds like a teenager in her no good deed, and it doesnt really work FOR ME (capitalized for emphasis on the fact that this is OPINION, not an act of war)
Hmm... I don't really think that it worked against her in the 2nd act. I think it was still nasal, but her powerful belting sound made it sound like the more mature Elphaba. Come to think of it, there are no Elphabas that I know of that showed Elphaba's maturity in both voice and character throughout the play except Shoshana. I LOVE her acting. Julia and Eden are good at the Elphaba maturing thing in a little bit of a way, but Sho is the best in MY OPINION (not meaning it as an act of war lol).
No, she hasn't played Velma. I love Julia and Chicago is my all time favorite show. If those two were combined I'd be the first to know. She WOULD make a great Velma though.
"If she'd hear, her babies queer" -audience laughs- "... that's absolutely fantastic... for all..."

Lol I would think Margaret Hamilton would have sung in a very nasal way like Shoshana or Idina. But Shoshana more than Idina but w/ less riffs.

She reminded me of Margaret AND how Gregory Maguire wrote Elphaba. Amazing actress and singer!

"i think she was trying in ALL that she did to be reminiscent of MArgeret Hamilton's role of the wicked witch"
THIS. This is why she made the perfect Elphaba. Because she took the Witch we're all familiar with and made her familiar in a whole new way.
TiPerihelion 3 years ago 2
Wicked was not a spin off of the film, it's an adaptation of the book, which had nothing to do with Margeret Hamilton.
PhantomCake 2 years ago
Way to miss the point. The musical has as much resemblance to the original film as it does to the book - possibly more.
