Some abusive parents, especially back then more so, believed they owned thier children and had the right to do what ever they wanted to them. What I would like to know is why she did not have any biological children. And how did she aquire the adopted children? And why she adopted those children.
@upcycle She was unable to have any herself; she just went to an adoption agnecy and applied for them (back then it was very easy to adopt esp if you were rich and famous) she adopted them because back then it was a show business accessory.
i read online that Christina was very spoiled too,other Hollywood stars would say how Christina would throw awful tantrums. Mayby by the time Joan's last two kids came along she was a better parent to the last two girls, she was better with them and a more experienced parent.
Well, i too believe in Christina's story. No one would put themselves through decades of public scrutiny and backlash if none of what she claimed happened in her book didn't happen. This is a heavy subject and I dare say it will be contested amongst fans and non-fans alike; did she abuse two of her adoptive children as claimed by Christina? It does not help that Crawford never really had the chance to reply since the book was published posthumously. I read the book in 1979 and I have to say it neither warmed me to her or otherwise. Joan Crawford was a Great actress and knew her craft well. So well, that she fooled the public that she wasn't a monster. If any you you have ever been physically, emotionally, or sexually abused by a parent, you know that they always want you to put on a pretty picture in public. I will remember all of Joan Crawford's fine performances in the movies but, even if I wasn't in her home I know that she was evil to Christina and Christopher.
It is my intent to make no provision for daughter Christina or my son Christopher for "reason that are well known to them"..so was Ms. Crawfords will...she didn't cut out Cathy or her other sister...there are reasons deeper then what we will know..she was a flawed, messed up and very driven to never go back to the poverty and abuse she came from and all the men in her life used her as did 2 of her 4 adopted children...there much more to his woman that MOMMY DEAREST.
i believe joan was her worse with kristina. i also believe from watching this woman in many interviews and other national broadcasts that she was very fakey and self centered. she was shallow and to her fame and looks was all that mattered. i think she dealt with a great deal of depression and mental illness that was overlooked in those days she thought she was grandiose and when her abilities failed and looks faded she lost her mind over it.

Eve Arden was one of her BEST friends. She commented to reporters that she didn't really disagree with Christina accounts. Eve said she always loved Joan but she should not have had children. Eve said back then, she didn't know what to call it but now, they call it bi-polar. Joan covered this by drinking which would only make it worse.

I think Joan was a strict disciplinarian taking everything to the extreme, she had a rough childhood, she became obssesed with perfection, being always the best, living by rules and so on. I think she definetely was an unfit candidate to be a mother, but i think there was a human need to. People that knew her for many years said that she was taking things too far. Obiously christina was angy with her and her unusual ways of raising a kid.
i was confused whather she was an abusive mother or not, UNTILL i read bob thomas' joan crawford biography: the woman was a strict disciplinarian taking it to the extreme: When christina was little, she loved judy garland and when she was invited to perfom at crawford's house, christina back talked joan, and she punished her by not letting her see her most favorite star to perform. she locked the kids for hours when they misbehaved, etc etc etc. Bob thomas knew her VERY well.

Christina did Joan a bigger favor than anyone else could have and that was to keep her memory alive in the minds of generations who would had no other reason to know who she was. It's not as though anything in Mommie Dearest is cruel to the point of implausibility.
If I were abused and hated this woman I would have cut off all ties...my understanding is she financially supported Christine for many years into her 30s..I don't respect anyone who waits til the DEATH of a parent to tell how bad they were...how convenient....that could happen to anyone and cannot defend yourself from the grave. Again I think Ms. Crawford was not the best parent but such is life...better life she gave to her adopted children than the one she came from.
@1927Norma -- If you've ever seen the movie, you will see that Joan never supported Christine. I too had the same type of mother, my story is identical to Tina's story and the reason why we stay is because we don't realize the abuse until we are well into our 30's and beyond. As children, we know that something is wrong, but we feel we can try to do better or be better in order to halt the abuse. But the more you try, the more the abuser will find other reasons to abuse.

I have read Mommie Dearest and seen the movie. The movie is absurd! Christina is portrayed as sickening sweet and her mother as a horrible monster. I don't know how anyone could have believed it. Maybe Joan wasn't the best mother ever, but Christina seems like a very vengeful and conniving person. In the book, Christina has letters from Joan that sound reasonable, but then Christina turns it around to sound horrible Joan's other surviving daughter says she was a wonderful mother!
@JoanCollins2009 Just one thing more...My mother saw JC within feet at the Fox Theater in St. Louis promoting a movie...my mother told me a black lemo pulled up and a chauffer opened up the door and there was a massive bar inside and out walked this very tiny petite woman with freckles, bright red hair and an Herman white stole...she wasn't sure at first it was her...then she realized it was JC. She never forgot that..Mom passed in 2008...miss her and her life stories. :)

Everybody had publicity machines that showed them working for charities, giving donations and the rest. Joan Crawford is far less than the only celebrity guilty of media manipulation. He said that he got the impression that his sister had written the book expecting Bette Davis to have died by the time it was published. She had been very ill after having had a stroke and she had a very very difficult recovery. A lot of people thought that she'd die, but she didn't.
Unlike Crawford, B.D. had to contend with someone who was able to defend herself against the charges hurled at her.
I like Joan Crawford, but I've been taught there's three different sides of the story. Christina's, Joan's and the truth. So I'm not going to sit here and act like I know what happened. It does not help that Crawford never really had the chance to reply since the book was published posthumously. I read the book in 1979 and I have to say it neither warmed me to her or otherwise. If any you you have ever been physically, emotionally, or sexually abused by a parent, you know that they always want you to put on a pretty picture in public. i believe joan was her worse with kristina. i also believe from watching this woman in many interviews and other national broadcasts that she was very fakey and self centered. she was shallow and to her fame and looks was all that mattered. i think she dealt with a great deal of depression and mental illness that was overlooked in those days she thought she was grandiose and when her abilities failed and looks faded she lost her mind over it.

I think Joan was a strict disciplinarian taking everything to the extreme, she had a rough childhood, she became obssesed with perfection, being always the best, living by rules and so on. I think she definetely was an unfit candidate to be a mother, but i think there was a human need to. People that knew her for many years said that she was taking things too far. I too had the same type of mother, my story is identical to Tina's story and the reason why we stay is because we don't realize the abuse until we are well into our 30's and beyond. As children, we know that something is wrong, but we feel we can try to do better or be better in order to halt the abuse. But the more you try, the more the abuser will find other reasons to abuse.

Wow some really dumb comments here. Emotional problems cause cancer? People really believe Christina? I think her daughter just wanted money and attention. A lot of these celebrity kids are ungrateful shits. Didn't Betty Davis' daughter write a terrible book too?

@PMnews1 The world is an evil place and always has been. The world is a beautiful place and always has been. There are good people, bad people, people who are a bit of both, victims and victimizers everywhere and very very few people, even in Hollywood are ONLY one or the other. Life isn't as "black and white" as that.

what a nasty mother..trying to get Christina.. jobs...nasty horriible lady...this shows more about JC and she kept a bed in a hospital....later 2 beds beds for motion picture performers...all medical exp. paid by Joan..she kept that by choice silenced until after her death...what a nast ugly Mommie Dearest she was...wished I had an aunt or grandmother with that mojo....not perfect no you were not.....but you had aheart..not perfectsince career was primary..but who else would take care of you???

@JoanCollins2009 I was making my previos statement in the vein of sarcasm..I can't say I lover her since I didn't really know her as a person but I think all the negative hype is just that...Christina released a book after JC died and if it were true why wouldn't she do it before her death and at least give a response chance? Two of her childred hated her and the other two loved her and said there is nothing in that book Christina wrote that they ever experienced...guess we will never know.

No one is perfect, Joan tried to pass the image of perfection, and cancer is always a cause of serious emotional problems. I really admire her, but mommie dearest was a schock

I have read Mommie Dearest and seen the movie. The movie is absurd! Christina is portrayed as sickening sweet and her mother as a horrible monster. I don't know how anyone could have believed it. Maybe Joan wasn't the best mother ever, but Christina seems like a very vengeful and conniving person. In the book, Christina has letters from Joan that sound reasonable, but then Christina turns it around to sound horrible Joan's other surviving daughter says she was a wonderful mother!

@JoanCollins2009 Just one thing more...My mother saw JC within feet at the Fox Theater in St. Louis promoting a movie...my mother told me a black lemo pulled up and a chauffer opened up the door and there was a massive bar inside and out walked this very tiny petite woman with freckles, bright red hair and an Herman white stole...she wasn't sure at first it was her...then she realized it was JC. She never forgot that..Mom passed in 2008...miss her and her life stories. :)

@PMnews1 Nearly every celebrity or politician does the exact same thing. That is the way the studio system worked back then. Everybody had publicity machines that showed them working for charities, giving donations and the rest. Joan Crawford is far less than the only celebrity guilty of media manipulation. Doesn't make her a child abuser.

@Cedricfollyman I remember an interview with B.D Hyman's brother. He said that he got the impression that his sister had written the book expecting Bette Davis to have died by the time it was published. She had been very ill after having had a stroke and she had a very very difficult recovery. A lot of people thought that she'd die, but she didn't.
Unlike Crawford, B.D. had to contend with someone who was able to defend herself against the charges hurled at her.

I like Joan Crawford, but I've been taught there's three different sides of the story. Christina's, Joan's and the truth. So I'm not going to sit here and act like I know what happened. Joan is not here to tell her side, but that doesn't take away from the fact that she was a superb actress. Mommie Dearest or not, I will never get tired of her movies.

just reading some of the comments and ppl need to learn to agree and to disagree. if you believe joan was a peach, great! if you believe tina told the truth, fine. IMO all celebs have two sides to them: private & exclusive! we don't know what personal demons they have because we don't know them. we can only assume and be conspiracy theorists with a lot them.

There are some entertainers who are always nice to their fans from the beginning and never change: Tori Amos, Wynonna Judd, Goo Goo Dolls to name a few. Then there are others who taste success and change. I feel this shows a person's true character. I've seen it.

I'm not sure if she was a good person, all I know is that I freaking love the movie I don't know any thing about Joan Crawford I just recenlty found out about the movie being a documentary

Boy, do I love Joan Crawford! ever since I watch her in "RAIN" , She bewitch me and was just tatoo in my mind as the greatest Dame in the world!! and at the same time I also had the chance to watch her as "Blanche" in "WHO KILL BABY JANE", in my infant mind I had just witness almost 40 years of work between one picture and the other, and wonder how the same person live through all this time in wonderful movies!!

To everyone who commented about Ms. Joan.....how do anyone know about what happened behind closed doors? Im not saying that she did or did not abuse her daughter but really? I mean just because you're big fans of hers and don't want to believe that she would be that ttype person doesn't mean that she didn't do it. All you people sound very uneducated. Unless you all was actually there and lived with the family then i'll listen to you....and that goes to the old farts in the documentary also.
