This was always the hardest sonic for me to nab all the chaos emeralds. Sonic 2 just required patience and practice, 3 and S&K was a piece of cake but Sonic 1 was frustrating beyond belief because of the difficulty of the later mazes and only having 10 chances total to get them all.
