I miss her.......her brother is genious and now she gone. Leon russell wrote this and his version is best but she was so good.O well ..........Makes me sad she died so young..goodnight Karen
I love her overdubbed backup vocals on Carpenters records. Nothing on earth sounds like that. Its like taking Linda McCartney out of Wings vocals. Its just not the same.
Made to be enjoyed on a cold day, with a wood fire blazing and a glass of port to hand. This song is part of a cluster of tracks at the end of the Song For You album that together make up one of the best concept pieces ever. It really needs to be listened to in the context of the album.
To my sweet Mom, Brenda....There's no one more important to me...can't you please see through me cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song for you. You taught me precious secrets of a truth withholding nothing. You came out in front and I was hiding but now I am so much better and if my words don't come together listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding. I love you in a place where there's no space or time. I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine. Love, Michele...
I dedicate this song to my mother and best friend, Brenda Mae. Mommy...I love you in a place where's there's no space or time...I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine. And when my life is over...remember when we were together....we were alone and I was singing this song for you...... With all my love and gratitude from your daughter, Michele Renee
One of my favorites by Karen. I remember it on the radio in the 70s, though it was not released as a single. In response to a post that said Whitney's version had soul and even Christina's had soul, but Karen's didn't, well, this version certainly moves MY soul. Please don't define soul for the rest of us. Karen's version moves me in a way that the other versions don't. All their wailing and vocal acrobatics mean nothing to me. I don't relate to it. Karen's version has soul and touches MY soul.
This song has been performed and recorded by hundreds of singers, nevertheless it has never been nor will it ever be performed like Karen Carpenter did. Funny how no matter the song, after she interpreted it, it became "hers and hers alone". I miss you every day, Karen. Your voice brings comfort to my soul every time.
this song has a very interesting refrain, bridge--very sophistacted--not your typical 32 bar wonder. And what can one say about Ms. Carpenter--she is divine.
The Carpenters took their lumps from the critics of their time - lyrics too "saccharin" they said... But like fine wine, their music has aged well over the years and occupies a place in music history transcendent of their contemporaries criticism...
It is all about the low notes, there are three who have the control in the lower register that Karen had: Sarah Vaughan, Mavis Staples and (gulp) Anne Murray. Everyone else wails away. In this song it is all about the timing in the "and I'm singing this song for you" at 0:25. Andy Williams does this as well (it is the phrasing that Uncle Leon wrote. Nothing against all the others who miasmize this phrase, but the close cluster is wonderful.
I'm happy to say I had the pleasure of meeting the man who wrote this song, Mr. Leon Russell, and he was a total gentleman, even granting me an autograph. One of my favorite song writers of all time. This song bears a lot of the responsibility for that.
In Litlle Girl Blue Part 2 (What I did with all the money I made off of Karen Carpenter's misfortune) Randy Schmidt should pay his usual kudos to him, himself & he & mention to the world that he indeed is denton's teacher of the year, & Remind the people once again that put him on the NY times best sellers list that, He became a Carpenters fan in 1989 after watching The made for TV movie, The Karen Carpenter story, WOW what a historian (NOT) How many you tube channels does this guy have?
Inside and out, Karen Carpenter was one of the most beautiful Souls to ever be on this Planet..........even Hypatia of Alexandria can't rank with her. May Karen's memory last as long as the Earth itself..........surely no voice in the Cosmos could ever be as sweet........and Human.
i love the carpenters i grew up with thier music and i love it itt is too bad that karen died so young thier will never be a voice like heres again we miss you karen
If you don't get emotional or melancoly when this angel sings then you're not human imo. Sweet Jesus what a talent! This woman could have sung the alphabet and I'd be in tears :)))
Much props to Mr. Russell for writing such a beautiful piece, but the late Donny Hathaway completely made this song, as far as I'm concerned. The accompanying instrumentals are absolutely epic.
@housebanks22 Leon Russell wrote this for his first solo album 'Leon Russell', which was released in 1970 on Shelter Records. A slow, pained plea for forgiveness and understanding from an estranged lover, the tune is one of Russell's best-known compositions.

We live in a world where the media just adds fuel to an already burning fire.Randy Schmidt is no different!!! How much substance can there be to an Author who purposely only puts part of Richard Carpenters head on a cover of a book that he has written, and then he states, when you get done reading the book, people will understand. Little Girl Blue is a mere Pamphlet compared to all the Facts that he couldn't get, some things "MUST" stay private Randy, because we know you would print it! GB KC
People are waxing lyrical about how great Amy Winehouse was, the girl had talent which she never realised; that's the worst thing; she hadn't offered anything in music for years. On the other hand, Karen marked herself as a legend through the biggest selling albums of all time, a true endearing legacy to a lady who HADso much more to offer. No comparison I'm afraid. RIP Karen and Amy.
@1980Houdini I respect both Amy and Karen. Amy is my generation, Karen my mum's. I dont think there is any reason to compare them. They're both legends in their own right. Amy also had the best selling album of the century in the U.K. She also had so much more to offer and that's what bought me back to this song again, as her posthumous album is to be released December 5th and she covered this song, which we be equally amazing as Donny's and Karen's version, I'm sure. R.I.P <3
I would like to put this one out there & roll the Dice for the world to read & see what they think of this idea. I would Love more than anything in the world for Richard Carpenter to get the Carpenter band together (including Herb, & Burt who were a Big part) & do a tribute show for Karen &Tony. Why not one more time, for the good old times. Everyones getting older each & every year, I really believe in my heart that this would be special & Karen could be included on a Big Screen with Pictures
You'll always be remebered by the wonderful songs you sung.one of which is A SONG FOR YOU.....a classic song that will linger in my mind for the rest of my life...a day after tomorrow.
... its hard to find words to describe this beautiful song ….. at the very least its breathtakingly lovely…. To the 26 dislikes ( so far ) may God forgive them ….
So sweet, what a tune. Karen Carpenter, ELLA Fitzgerald, Luciano Pavarotti, and last but not least Frank Sinatra; vocalists who could truely reach the soul.
People have been asking me about if I knew of any other Carpenters material that would be released to the public. I know personally that there is quite a bit of product out there that people will enjoy, especially alot of backstage footage, but ultimetely the decision will be up to Richard at what he wants to release weather it be outtakes, or other product. However some footage will stay private, including some of my own footage, & I will always honor that. However it's time to open te vault!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I will go on the record by saying Karen Carpenter's problem was ultimately SELF ESTEEM, that lead to her eating disorder. Over the last 10 months countless people have told me that I was right about Randy Schmidt just wanting to sell books, however pay no kudos to me. The fans usually find out the truth. I can add 25 chapters to Randy's INCOMPLETE book. The people who wouldn't talk to him will talk to me, because I would NEVER throw people of whom I Love under the bus, especially Karen.
@vmuto1 Naturally, anorexia and bulimia is def a self-esteem problem,However,it goes lot deeper than just that and we are not professionals to proclaim that..Being a woman and growing up in that era in general i feel as if"having felt as if you had no control over your own life"(over-protective) parent's,just as Karen's life..as most a girl's life was back in that day, coming fro a religious aspect as well......If the book says anything less then i will def not buy it!!!!!!
I bet her recording of this song made Leon Russell cry! What a voice! RIP, Karen... you made millions of girls want to sing, play the drums, and rock. You opened the door for generations, and I'm so glad I got to see you in person. What a lovely soul.
My 8 year old son compares this version with Michael Buble's. Every time he hears the iPhone playing Buble's version, he tells me to play the one with the lady, it's so much "smoother"
As for The Carpenters & The Hall of Fame. Look friends, The Carpenters did their own thing, ONE BIG THING, that people should know is they didn't sign up to be on anyones team, or kiss anyones ass. They recorded, did touring galore around the world,, recieved grammies, best selling American group between 1970-80. Richard even says,"you dont have to like us, but you can't say we're not good" They we're ORIGINAL, & that pisses people off still today. Even Donny & Marie has seem to forget KC & RC.
What an amazing voice. Minimal instrument arrangements and her vocals are mind-blowing. Gone are the days when singers actually could 'SING'. Wish I was born in the 60s or the 70s...
is the original album version from the remastered cd also remixed by her brother? cause if it is, i might as well just buy the 40/40 compilation instead...thanx
Wonderful song, wonderful voice. Great orchestration by another 'giant' in the music business, Mr Perry Botkin Jr. When talented individuals like these meet .... 'something wonderful is bound to happen ......
Known this all my life, hearing it anew today after finding a discography for another amazing artist . Karen & Richard's hands are full with the vocal & piano, so who puts all the rest of this together? A creative genius in the form of arranger/orchestrator Perry Botkin, Jr , writer of the song Bless the Beasts & the Children. It's his placement of the lush strings, the backing vocals, the sax solos & the dynamics that take this pretty song & help transform it into the work of art we love today.
Your voice is Oh! so gorgeous, Karen your stay on this planet has left so much for some of us to enjoy, I am now approaching my eightieth birthday. perhaps if there is another place you will be topping the charts BUT HAPPILY? F_ANTASTIC LADY.

With each day that goes by, now going on 10 months, I'm still sickened by the fact that Karen's friends Carol, Debbie & Frank actually "ALLOWED" Randy Schmidt to bring both himself & his book to East Haven & even worse Nathan Hale Elementary School. I Love & Respect all three of you & I'm really glad that the most precious & private things about Karen Randy will NEVER have to know. The post reaction that Mr. Schmidt was there was Not well received by East Haven. Still isen't!
@robbieoros Jesus Robbie, I read the first line of what you shared, and i thought- YEAH ! ...Thats how i'm feelin' too ! i did not expect it would be for a like reason, Loss... until i read on. i lost my best friend right after Graduation...and after 24 years, for some reason, 2 or 3 times a month, he comes back like its yesterday and i did not cry this time till i read your post, i'm sorry for your pain Bro,.... But, as a Career Hospice nurse, i Have SEEN...and i know you WILL see them again.
yeah, i gotta say, i'm a died in the wool 43 year old Rocker ! but, i loved Karen and Richard Carpenter since i was a wee tot, and after all these years and more than a few Hard Miles... i still got nothin' but love and appreciation For the way their UNBELIEVABLY SMOOTH Vocals and Arrangements, and Wickedly Heartfelt Melodies and lyrics, still Tug at my little kid soul... screw it, i'm proud of my Gentle "whipped cream" center. i'm a good man, and Richard and Karen Remind me of that, Thankyou !
One of the best female voices of all time...Karen Carpenter did not die from anorexia itself, but from the side-effects of the disease. - Why Karen, Why??!!(ML)

Karen has a "gift" (i think that's the right word)...
a gift that enables her to sing a song and make it sound and feel as if...
- she sings for no one but you.
- she sings with only you in mind.
- she invests in every emotion that the song require because every song is for you.
