I loved this game for the playstation it was just so much fun to play all night long, i just never understand why the people that play this game and record videos of it play in first person mode, it's so dull and boring, play in third person!

@tsuaFzneiH Indeed I remember pressing the throttle button for like a sec made you go directly into a wall and it'd play the collision with wall sound so loud and everyone else had like driven past you two times already :P I still call this the fastest racing game ever released, and it still is! :)

I played the demo heavily as a kid. It ran very slow on our computer though, a framerate of 2fps or even less, without dropframes of course haha.

But I love it. Bullfrog games were awesome. I loved Syndicate and Syndicate Wars.

oh man my aunt gave me this game on my birthday . This game had totally rocked my brains . It was so amazing . I still have this game on a CD . I used to play it on my very first intel based comp more than 10 years ago .

What's not so widely known is that the game was developed in just 3 weeks. Bullfrog had a contract obligation to release so many games to their publisher (EA, IIRC), and where in danger of overrunning. Hence, Hi-Octane.

Considering Bullfrogs normal quality, it makes you wonder what they could have done with more time.

Best racer from this era was probably SCREAMER. See if you can find a copy - was almost as good as the arcade games of the time. It's sequel wasn't too bad either.

It's an awesome game, but there's really no point in playing it with such a terrible framerate. This game was all about the insane speed in ran with on my p133. Borderline uncontrollable yet so much better than Wipeout.

It only had 6 levels, choice of car mad no statistical difference, invisible walls everywhere (including the annoying one on the turn in the second level) but it was fucking awesome none the less!

@Richy0326 Agree, but choice of car did make a difference. I thought the firepower/speed differences between the cars was readily apparent. Statistical -- I guess it depends on your playing style.

the problem is the core which is automatic, change it to for example simple and then set cputype to 486 and fine tune with cpucycles, do not skip frames as it will make it run faster!

I love htis game, but I like even more its soundtrack... with the AWE32 it sounded like real CDAudio (and they were MIDIs I think), now I just get the soundblaster 16 FM emulation with the cards from nowadays... does anybody know any way to get back the amazing sound for this game? I just loved its soundtrack!

one of the great technical aspects of this game was the way you could completely strip all the fancy graphics from it for a lower end PC, or have them really high for a good PC
