Funny to hear the millonaire rock-star who complained about taxes in his song 'Taxman' and lived in a sumptuous Victorian palatial home, surrounded by lavish gardens attacking the Pope with lies. I love George, but come on. He was as full of shit as anybody else and in this song he exhibits a monumental hypocrisy.
Sorry, George fans. I tell it like it is and you know that I'm right.
To quote a line of another harrisong:
"It's easier to look at someone else's wealth that to see yourself".
@UgRacing I have my eyes open, thank you very much. The fact is that in many of his song lyrics George came across as a loving and compassionate individual, but in this particular bit of lyric he sounds like a religious fundamentalist. One expect from somebody like him a different message than "my hindu religion is great and your christian religion is bunch of lies". It make him sound like a fanatic.
@SoundGardenX I agree! George had a sound that were only his and I don't think it really showed in the stuff he did with the Beatles. And it's not the instruments he used or that it was insired by India or whatever. It's more the way he did it, the way he wrote it and the way he sang it.
Does that make me a total geek for even thinking about it?
I think George weas on the right tract - as a christian I think he was mistaking his true lord - i know he knew JESUS but could not fully accept his divinity - Jesus said quite clearly - m(sic) I am the way the truth the lif e- no man gets to the father but through me.....should this be true.....i think hes the only one who ever proclaimed this...regardless- God bless you George!!!!! rest in your peace.
barilko5551: This great man is gone from the world and "sitting at the right hand of his god" (someone said that upon George's death - maybe Mia Farrow? I am paraphrasing.) Please don't cheapen his beliefs by injecting your own.
I think they should have used more updated pictures. Only thing wrong. His spirit comes through his voice everytime I hear it.. He had very strong faith.Probably what kept him going all those years.
beautiful comments i,m so glad to be in here away from the hate thats on you tube sometimes beautiful comments for a beautiful man rip george & john GEORGE we miss you
This is a really sweet and good song, the lyrics are worth thinking of :D
I personally believe that one can belive in Jesus even if one belives in Krishna, ´cause God, Allah,Krishna etc. are all the same.. it is we peoplee who are making these religions different from eachother.
Jesus is in our hearts, it´s there we should be looking for him :) I don´t see that there´s a problem in mixin religious beliefs a bit, everyone is after all entitled to believe as they want, don´t you think?
"You don't need to designate or to emigrate before you can see Jesus - If you open up your heart - You'll see He's right there - Always was and will be - He'll relieve you of your cares..."
Oh and I'm sure that I'll be attacked by both sides of the argument for my last comment but seriously guys why the heck does a beautiful song by a man seeking God have to spur so much hate?
"For He says to Moses, 'I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.'"
I personally believe that the way to heaven is through Jesus Christ but that he is infinately more merciful than most Christians give him credit (I mean he did die for our sins!) and will let into heaven whoever he damn well pleases: Muslims, Jews Hinduhs etc. included. I feel this non-confrontational and yet non-universalist version of Christianity is underrepresented.
They believe Islam is the way to God, but in the end, God will weigh the hearts of non practitioners/believers to decide if the may get into heaven.
I have to applaud you for your belief - nothing turns me off more from religion than the idea that people I love could be banished to hell on a technicality.
God is love, and compassion is a manifestation of love.
"He is infinitely more merciful than most Christians give him credit."
It is said that God?Jesus Christ's greatest attribute is mercy. We will all need it at our death and I will be calling on the name of Jesus Christ. I am sure George did as well. He just mixed in a lot of other names as well that are NOT the same as Jesus Christ.
Every knee shall bend and tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. He will take care of those above the earth and below it.
No need to use the words "Jesus" or "Christ" to proclaim him. God is more than any human can imagine. don't underestimate the ways that people can find God.
Geroge already found Jesus Christ. Let it Be. "I believe, yes I believe, More I cannot say. What more can I say" John Lennon
Wonderwall, relax. as George sang in this tune, Christ is in your heart, awaiting on you AND He will relieve YOU of YOUR care.
Don't fight it. Explore why you are you adamant about denying Jesus Christ. What was it that led you away, or what has happened to make you so bitter. If you were not raised with Jesus as Lord, then that explains it. George's idol was Dylan.
Your still talking as if Jesus is the only path in life, there are many others. George followed a different path, and stuck to it, and if you cant deal with that, its your problem, but don't try to force your religion on us or George.
More like...Jesus isn't just one thing. The Living Word of God made flesh (please note - alive, dynamic, not locked into black print in a book...that's called "bibliolatry" and is a form of idolatry) can be seen in many places. George saw it in Krsna, whose law is love, love, love, always love. I have no doubt Jesus sees George's heart and loves him deeply, even now.
Great melody but NO truth to George's 3rd verse I am sure George knows that now.Pope never owned one share of General Motors. George misrepresented or out and out lied. Pope is qualified to quote us more than the sock exchange. The hypocracy is so great. George blasts the church yet brother George was probably a pro-abort. He was so blinded like all of us. I like rosary beads, and George said he like his prayer beads. "to hope you can see Jesus" Listen carefully and pray for Georges' soul.
Why is sharegrace taking George's lyrics so literally? Are you serious? Do you not know about how British wit often includes an element of sarcasm to it, and that's likely why he wrote that line? You also got the other line wrong; it's "You don't need to designate or to emigrate before you can see Jesus" AND...the Vedic tradition is older even than Judaism.
Pope Benedict XVI wears handmade red leather Italian loafers that would normally cost over $600. He lives in a palace. He wears robes embroidered in gold when he celebrates Mass.
When George says "When the Pope owns 51% of General Motors and the stock exchange is the only thing he's qualified to quote us" he's referring to these materialistic indulgences such as costly shoes and robes, etc.
And don't even deliberately misunderstand what I'm saying and say "Benedict wasn't Pope when this song was written." Hello - George is stating that the Pope, whoever it is, lives large, with lots of bling and fancy stuff, and riches keep one distant from God.
Jesus said as much himself...when the rich man said, "Good Rabbi, how can I inherit eternal life?" Jesus said, keep the commandments. The man said, I have done so all my life. Jesus said, SELL ALL YOU HAVE...
...and follow me. The rich young man went away disappointed because he did not want to give up his STUFF.
Jesus sided with the poor, who didn't have gold embroidered vestments and gold monstrances and palaces and $600 handmade Italian loafers and a specially built vehicle with a private driver, etc.
George has lots of bling and if you are not living in the streets, there is more you too can give.
Don't you remember when Judas was upset that Jesus Christ allowed the woman to put all the expensive oil over his whole body... Do you know the scripture??
George I am sure realized that Jesus Christ was and is the Alpha and the Omega. Krishna never claimed to be sister.Remember, George was very angry for many reasons. Christ Jesus relieved him of his care. Watch Oliva return to Christ, w/Dan
Excellent Van Hildegarde. Olivia went along for the eastern ride, but she never denied Christ I assume. Plus her parents and relatives, from Mexico I believe surely have their influence on her and Dhani.
I do pray for George regularly. I am sure part of his judgment had to do with the fallout of his embracing Hinduism and abandoning in some ways Christianity. Yet GodJesus Christ reads the heart and be sure that Jesus saw the love of God in George's life. Glad Dylan, Georges hero sang of Christ
No truth to that line brother. Pope owns no shares of GM and he can quote us more than the stock exchange. So if it is not truth it is either a lie or George was misled.
Anyway no hard feelings. Read the other notes made
I'm sure that Harrison didn't really think that the pope owned any stock in anything....he was just blasting the formality of it all...you can be completely spiritual without the structure of any religion
"The "Quiet Beatle", was so convinced. so sincerely convinced that Error was Truth, and Truth was Error..." This is from an article by Mark Alessio who writes for Remnant magezine. The entire article deals with George, the Church and hypocracy. I always liked George, but he was misled greatly and he took many with him. He certainly was cool, right?. Pope Benedict the 16th has written about syncretism. George was a poster child for this.
George seemed bitter. He was in the material world.
Again, share-Being one of the Beatles, this guy went through so many ordeals in his life that we can't even comprehend. You,(we) don't know where his soul is at.
Syncretism is not necessarily bad, there is truth in many other beiefs. Those that are really devout, will in time acknowledge and see Christ.
I agree with you. The Catholic Church teaches something similar. I mean no harm. I just know some were hurt whenever George blasted the Church, supported Monty Python that blasted the Church or made a movie with Madonna, that flopped, that blasted the Church.
George ultimately was on the side of the angels. He knew not what he was doing. Lots of drugs, fame, ego, pressures, sin yes, like many of us. Priest said at Mass today, holieness is constancy.
Again, Do not be convince that Christanity is the only right path. For many it is and for many it isn't. Do not try to say that he was mislead. He wasn't, he truly belived in it. Just because you dont like or belive in it, doesnt mean that it is wrong, and will be proven wrong. Deal with the fact that their are more than one path that one may follow, and each one is right for the person that chose's it. I Hare Krishna
thankyou!! i love the scenes from let it be.. and this is one of my all time fav george songs ! yes ''by chanting the names of the lord you will be free'' HARE OM !
George could use words like dagger but he could lie too. Pope did not own GM and he could quote more than stocks.I saw George play. I liked him, still do. He was a baptised Catholic and abandoned the faith. The drugs, woman, divorce, rock and roll and liberal eastern religion was more attractive.Jesus CHrist loves George. I pray George is getting closer to the beatific vision. Its easy to knock the Church and be misled. God bless GH & those he influenced that are doing well and that are suffering
It was H0Quartz who said there was truth to Georges line about the Pope. I had to point out that the lyrics in the 3rd verse are a lie and inaccurate. I know George was throwing his weight around. I saw him play, liked his music. I met Lennon a couple of times, ahh but remember what George's IDOL said, "You gotta serve somebody and there is a slow train coming." I am sure George had a problem with Dylan becoming a Christian, especially with Dylan's zeal. No room for new age nonsense. Peace to u
That is what some secular humanists, atheists, media types, pagans and others want you to believe. Dylan sang Gotta Serve Somebody and In the Garden not too long ago.
Can't deny it, the Lord Jesus Christ is awaiting on you. He is in your heart and he will relieve you of your care.
George knew Chriat was way the truth and life. He was just too locked into hare krishna teachings to proclaim Christ. Oh so many who have been duped by the new age eatern ways and Geroge now knows he was 1 of them.
No, George and every other Hindu wasnt duped into the hare Krishna teaching, we truly believe in it. Just because you think that Christanity is the only true thing it doesn't mean that every other Religion is false and somebody as intelligent as George would obviously realize this. Everybody is entitled to their own belif's and you don't have the right to go around saying that there wrong. George believed in Hare Krishna teachings not Christanity, so you should repect that. Hare Krishna
The problem with many people who try to apply their own understanding to religious texts is that they are not guided by love. This was what was wrong with the Pharisees who claimed to be know all. God would never allow false religions to gain such credence. You are a product of your own culture, Christianity is all you've known. You're scared of dealing with realities which are far more complex. Muslims, Hindus etc are not damned to hell. And just how well do you serve the Lord?
He could also lie too for the Pope did not own 51% of GM.
"to hope you can see Jesus"
George was blind like all of us. I wonder if he was pro-abortion? How does that synch up with his new age, syncrenistic religion? George like many of us wanted to make his own rules. At the end I hope he asked Jesus Christ to bless him. IF he reincarnates as a cat or a birch tree we will have to ask him. I liked him, and pray for him even knowing the lyrics. We have all been misled and he is no exception.
May Jesus Christ, the alpha and the omega bless, protect and send His Holy Spirit to you. The Vedas mention one who would come and die for the sins of the people. We will know by the fruits if they are for God or not.
May Jesus Christ remain in our hearts as George sings in this song.
I,for one, am truly awake and seeing God for who He really is and, with how I'm still striving and succeeding in doing His work the way it's imbedded in my genetic makeup, then, when I die, I'll know that my work will be done and I'll be in Heaven.

I Hare Krishna

amber,I still agree there's good points in many beliefs. Still, the Holy Trinity is the real truth.

This album is awesome. Best solo Beatles album. These are all the songs that McCartney wouldn't let George put on Abbey Road/Let it Be/White Album.

"The Pope owns 51% of General Motors and the stock exchange is the only thing he's qualified to quote us".
The man could use words like a dagger!

I must have heard this song a thousand times but I never had any idea that those were the words. Thank you
Treman262 5 years ago
George could use words like dagger but he could lie too. Pope did not own GM and he could quote more than stocks.I saw George play. I liked him, still do. He was a baptised Catholic and abandoned the faith. The drugs, woman, divorce, rock and roll and liberal eastern religion was more attractive.Jesus CHrist loves George. I pray George is getting closer to the beatific vision. Its easy to knock the Church and be misled. God bless GH & those he influenced that are doing well and that are suffering

Sharegrace-It's his brilliant wit,a kind of mocking,if you will. You take all the lyrics too seriously.
The main gist is an absolute. Jesus is here,He always was and will be. The Lord is waiting for all to awaken & see.

Oh so many who have been duped by the new age eatern ways and Geroge now knows he was 1 of them.
sharegrace 4 years ago
No, George and every other Hindu wasnt duped into the hare Krishna teaching, we truly believe in it. Just because you think that Christanity is the only true thing it doesn't mean that every other Religion is false and somebody as intelligent as George would obviously realize this. Everybody is entitled to their own belif's and you don't have the right to go around saying that there wrong. George believed in Hare Krishna teachings not Christanity, so you should repect that. Hare Krishna

I ...don't think he was. His friends seemed to feel he was serious. Does it really matter though?
magegirl8 3 years ago
@wonderwallmusic Dylan was joking about Christianity? Where did you get that idea? He says the opposite in interviews.

@dachille1 I posted that like 50 years ago when I was a silly boy. Forgive me

Krishna bless you.

May Jesus Christ, the alpha and the omega bless, protect and send His Holy Spirit to you. The Vedas mention one who would come and die for the sins of the people. We will know by the fruits if they are for God or not.
May Jesus Christ remain in our hearts as George sings in this song.

I love the Wall of Sound sound on this track. And what amazing words! In my opinion, he was just as good a lyricist as John.
BeatsonsGirl84 5 years ago
Yes, the wall of sound. You can see that Phil Spector was producing the album.

I,for one, am truly awake and seeing God for who He really is and, with how I'm still striving and succeeding in doing His work the way it's imbedded in my genetic makeup, then, when I die, I'll know that my work will be done and I'll be in Heaven.
