I was diagnosed with narcolepsy-cataplexy two months ago, and I'm going through different medication now. Provigil worked really well, but I had to stop taking it because of the side effects. I haven't been to school for two years now, and I'm extremely stressed of the whole situation. Also, I haven't seen the sun in many months now. I live in Finland, so now in January the sun sets at 4pm, when I'm still asleep. Right now my life is a depressing haze, but atleast there's some hope now.
Poor kid. I believe I know how this works. Basically it's what the reporter said, but the paralysis is him falling directly into REM sleep. This also causes the hallucinations he has been having, but he is actually dreaming.
I hate how the media generalizes everything, no matter what it is. Never giving the full facts. Only showing what would cause more of a shock to viewers. Most people when you talk about narcolepsy think it's when you fall asleep standing up and just out of nowhere. Many people just have extreme fatigue without cataplexy. I remember the first time I had sleep paralysis, A extreme fear came over me also and I pray non stop to god to help me, I thought it was some sort of demonic presence!
i dunno wtf is wrong wit me , but im always tired, if i wake up early i puke. so i sleep till about 2-4 pm. even then i have no energy until about 9 pm then i cant sleep at all . when i do sleep i wake up like every half hour. i would take sleeping pills but i feel like im gonna die when i lie down from chest pain i also cough up shit all day long.
I don't think most people understand just how difficult it is to live with narcolepsy. All through high school and most of college I had doctors telling me to excercise more, eat better, change my routine, etc. Finally I had a sleep latency test, which lead to my diagnosis. From that point on, my life changed. What is truly amazing is the millions of people mis-diagnosed or not diagnosed at all. Without treatment, it can be a debilitating illness that greatly reduces your quality of life.
I must have some type of narcolepsy - because I've often experienced sleep-poralysis.... whereby I feel I'm asleep or close to falling asleep... and I'll "dream" that I'm sleeping. In those moments, I can't move but I'm still consciously awake and I KNOW that I'm asleep/awake. On top of that, I can sleep at will and can easily sleep 12 hours
@Burnsengine You can experience sleep paralysis without being narcoleptic. The body is partially paralyzed in sleep, but sometimes it doesn't happen properly (sleepwalking) or the mind wakes too soon (sleep paralysis); most people experience one or both of these at some point, and it's associated with a number of other disorders besides narcolepsy (migraines, for instance). See a doc before you self-diagnose, to be on the safe side. ;)
@StupidIdiot12345 Hahaha, yes I am indeed a poor troll, that was kind of what I was going for in that comment. Crazy as it might sound, I actually happen to be the guy who was interviewed in this segment... I was just having some nonsensical fun with the odd phenomenon of finding a YouTube video of myself.
FYI: That paralyze/can't move hear/see things is called a 'scissor lock', and is common in narcoleptic and non-narcoleptic people. Actually, one can self-induce a scissor lock if conditioning the body the right way. I'd post a link but then that might be marked as spam... AKO, look it up! But otherwise, this was an interesting video. COOL :D
OMG! I don't have narcolepsy but I have had sleep paralysis a lot of times before. It so scary, like I wake up and want to roll over or like grab some water next to my bed BUT you try to move but you can't and you like panic but can't move! It's soooo weird and scary! I experience micro sleeps like most people ocasionaly. 1 second of sleep (on my feet or sitting down),but i suddenly cant move for 20 seconds and often see and here things. i think to my self wake up wake up but i cannot move.i can just watch the world. could this be cataplexy? its not every day though i am always tired. 12 h0ours sleep is not even enough.
and when i do sleep I dream in less then 1 second is this narcolepsy?
I am on Xyrem so I get better quality sleep at night, A c-pap machine for sleep apnea and I currently take adderall XR 10mg twice a day for my excessive daytime sleepiness-does methamphetamine work better? Anyone who has narcolepsy receive disability?
@indianirishfrench yo you ever take the 2 doses at once and not go to sleep? you get fucked up.. i was on it for a while but got off to take accutane, im gonna get back on it soon
I have narcolepsy and Xyrem works good for me with cataplexy my daytime is helped greatly with Provigil. To those saying this guy is lazy I believe if you had soemthing similar you might have a differant view plus what comes around goes around :).
I TAKE RITALIN I have narcolepsy since I have 10 YEARS OLD and now and 35 for the lats 3 years I beaing taking also at nigth tine CLOMIPRAMINE it help me to sleep somtime better at night and more strong during the day
I missed my entire freshman year of high school due to Narcolepsy. My parents thought I was in a coma or something. I like this video, it brings out all the important aspects of the disorder and how even watching a show that is funny is hard to deal with. I have all the same symptoms and try'd all the drugs and it never helps 100%. It's a life long sentence of complications, but it's life and all of us that have it, deal with it!
you are a meatball, there is no pitty, people think it is no big deal when it is very hard to do any thing, I cant play laughing hard and having real fun with my son caz ill just fall over. Pitty that! Grow up!
I had a few Hypagogi moments a few years ago, probably from me not be comfortable.I think I`m narcoleptic, I get tired very quickly and I get up and lay down and say fuck it I`m going to sleep.I don`t pass out in class or fall where I am, It`s just laziness and tiredness.
I was swimming a few years ago. Me and my sisters snuck out to go swimming in the summer at around 4am...We got to the pond and when I went under, I fell into a deep deep sleep and the hullications seemed so calming and peaceful i thought i was dying. i saw beautiful castles, starfish that shone bright, etc...i felt...perfectly normal and then it all rushed away as i was being drug back to shore by my sister and gasping for air. It's hard to do much as a Narcoleptic.
This shit's real. I eat something that has a high glycemic index and I'm copping Z's after a short while. I hate it. I was in class and I ate a oatmeal raisin cookie because I was hungry and needed something to eat later I dozed off right in front of the teacher and I was the first desk directly in front of her. I apologized after class. I felt bad but they don't have anything low G.I. in the vending machines and I had to eat something I was starving.
I haven't seen any video that says that they get the same medication as I do - In Norway called Ritalin - very similar (but not the same) as Methamphetamine. I almost call it "speed" (as the drug) as I get awake and full of energy. It totally changed my life. Anyone who use the same thing or have seen vids with people who does?
I tried Ritalin, but I might as well have been just drinking water. Didn't do a thing to me. Now, in addition to Xyrem, I take high doses of dextroamphetamine. Much more potent and seems to keep me awake enough to at least function in life. But I wouldn't be where I am now without Xyrem. That gives me more of a boost than any of my medications. Without it the dextroamphetamine would be useless.
@triggerhappygunnerm I take 30mg of Ritalin everyday. I can really say it saved my life. Or at least it gave me one. I lost my first year on my engeneering course just sleeping. It was awful and nobody could understand why that stupid mtf was sleeping at Calculus classes.
It has been about two years since I was diagnosed, I have severe narcolepsy and severe cataplexy, it sucks. I really hope that there will be a cure in the future. I guess things could be a lot worse, I would rather have these problems then a lot of other things.
-Automatic Behavior kicks my butt...a quick trip to the store for milk turns into a 2 hour sleep walking event(while being followed by Store Security).
-I've driven over 50 miles into the next state...woke up while I was still driving down the highway at 65 miles per hour(posted limit)
-I was even kidnapped by homeless people when I tried to ride the public bus.I woke up as one of them was sticking his hands in my pocket, "looking for my ID"
omg that really sucks! I have a VERY mild form of this problem...always sleep through all my classes (currently in college)...happens during movies and driving too. - I have had occasional symptomes of the hallucination during nap, and can't move...trying to scream but can't and eventually jerk up. But i'm def not as bad as this guy..sry!
I am wondering....could it have something to do w/ eye-strain? it seems like i always gets sleepy went im starting at something -professor, movie/tv, the road
Wow. Finally a video that has the facts straight. My narc w/ cat is much less severe than this. Stimulants & a noon nap allow me to get through the day with little sleepiness. If you have a narcoleptic friend, please be their friend. It may be amusing, but keep in mind those naps are really important. Thanks.
I too can relate. My sleep paralysis often consists of the devil coming after me, and let me tell you the hallucinations during this sleep paralysis is terrifying. I can feel the heat, hear the tortured screams, see the devil and demons and sometimes even smell burning flesh. I know that this isn't everyone's perception of hell, but during my sleep paralysis this is what comes through most times. The cataplexy, extreme daytime sleepiness and having to take constant naps is annoying.
I don't have cataplexy to where I completely fall to the ground during the day, but it's nice to meet someone who has the same type of hypagogic hallucinations, along with paralysis, as I do. It's scary as hell right! Especially when you do come fully awake and the hallucinations are still there, but fading away, thank God.
I also have Narcolepsy with cataplexy, hypogogic and hypnopompic hallucinations, sleep paralysis, and extreme daytime sleepiness. but I do not take Xyrem -- which is sold on the street as GHB (yes, the date-rape drug). I only take the stimulants and antidepressants to help control cataplexy...
