In the book it says that Vermeer doesn't paint his wife and doesn't even let her inside the studio only because she is too careless about things and can't sit still. I think the book is a great read, it explains deeper emotions and everything else in great detail plus there are some things missing in the movie like Griet's family story and Vermeer wife's 5th and 6th child. I think the movie is really beautiful, I almost cried.
I think it's funny how some of the comments relate to the wife's attractiveness being the reason he wouldn't paint her. Honestly they were both just as attractive IMO but art is so subject and I think if I were an artist (which I'm not so don't take this to heart) it'd be more about the feeling and what I see in my work rather than how aesthetically pleasing it is.
I watched this today in art class and my favorite part in all this was when she had to take her bonnet off and the master saw her hair. I screamed out ,"Oh no you took my hair virginity!" Just cause the look on her face. Hahaha :D ! Oh and sitting behind my teacher I said , "Why doesn't she & the master just get together already?" and she said "You have to think about this logically!" and I said , "But...the butchers son is uglyy! Id give myself away to that hunk of a master anyday and runaway
ive been looking for this movie for so long! i cant believe i found it on youtube! i love it! and the butcher boy oooo took her virginity! oooo i love the way the movie is periodic and about my favourite thing ART! great story and perfect character casting
@melsibrith I think he just meant them as a farewell gift to Griet. Also, there was no welfare at the time. The loss of a job was devastating to her family. They've been sinking into poverty ever since her tile painter father loss his sight, and his right hand was maimed. Recall Griet's desperate plea to her Master the first time she almost lost her job due to being blamed for Cornelia's theft.
@jasprincess98 Because she was a servant, lower than the wife. Wearing her pearls-- the husband's favorite-- puts them on the same level in the wife's mind.
@melsibrith I feel like it also has to do with the fact that her husband seems to take interest in Griet. She has a guess that something is going on even if there are no actions taken. She sees how he stares at her and he in the end paints Griet but never paints his wife. It hurst her
@jasprincess98 i dont think the wife was upset about the pearls, she wanted the pearls to be the reason for her anger, but she was just mad at johannes attention for griet, basically jelousy. this is all in the book, recommend u read it ^^
Vemeer and the wife just don't get each other. The look he gives her at 2:30 tells me "Yes, she did wear your pearls, but if you understood art, you'd know it had to be done and this wouldn't be an issue. But you don't. And I resent that about you." whilst she can only think, "How dare you let this OTHER woman wear my pearls? Tread so intimately into your heart and passions? What's she got that I haven't? Why aren't I the special one?"
Stupendous acting on both sides. Great underrated film, imo.
@lickurbass To guard her modesty. Griet was a raised a stern Protestant and so strongly believed that in order to remain "pure", she must cover her hair; especially in front of other men. When Vemeer sees her hair, the effect it had on her was so strong that it was almost as though he had taken her virginity. To be seen without her headcovering was a significant loss of innocence for her. That's why she slept with Pieter, I think. She thought "Why not? I'm unpure anyway."
@lickurbass The whole thing is must easier to grasp in the novel, methinks. It's basically a symbol of innocence...that's what I took away from the book. Haha, hope I've helped! ;)
@Bloodnswash You're welcome. Yeah, the film itself is amazing too. Especially Scarlett. I really love her. I had first watched the film and then read the book. While reading it, I used to imagine Griet as Scarlett and every single discription was very appealing to me. Then I watched the film again and it had nothing to do with the first viewing. Somehow it become more emotional. :)
@Bloodnswash I suppose that you will have finished the book by now, but it's ok. I am glad to hear that you are enjoying it so far (talking 3 weeks ago XD). I enjoyed every little detail of it too. In my opinion a masterpiece is great in all aspects, only in its original form. During the conversion into another form, it looses some of its glamour. :))
I think that the book wos so much better, there are allot things they missed .First of all ,there are no France and Agnes, second, she didn`t slaped Cornelia cos of that, third, they didn`t showed the part when Kathren dropped a knife in Greit`s house, and in book it says that Kathren has curley hair, not straight, and they also skipped the part when her family wos eal.
Ok , here's what I think. Regina Spektor's facial features have more resemblance to the girl in the painting. The eyes, lips, her stare (at least it's the feeling I got when I saw the painting in pictures) , but then again, Regina is not an actress so I didn't see how she can possibly be Griet ,I don't see any connection lol (but I do love her as a singer).
(3) and who he saw when he saw her in her mothers kitchen cutting vegetables and who cleans his studio and helps him. But he cant look at the breathing-speaking Griet because he cant promise anything to her and would only end up hurting her. By having the painting (which in the book he took from VanR a while after Griet left) he could always look at her as he wanted.
(2) She is her muse because of the painting looking out the window that she inspiredand the idea she silently gave him to remove the chair, much like what a muse would do.As for the painting of Griet, as she said, hehad captured HER in the painting and that's why it seems he loves the painting not her. Though in fact, he loves the real Griet who is seen in the painting
(1) The movie missed a lot of what the book had, which I expectedThe last part of the book I thought was very important after all Vermeer had his WIFE give her the pearls and i would have liked to see thatLike most movies based on books it felt a bit rushedStill it was great and i very much loved it As for Griet's and Vermmer's relationship i think its obvious that their was sexual tension as seen in scenes with both of them in it, it was like pink elephant in the room.
@dementiaHIGH I somewhat disagree. If the painting mattered more to Vermeer then the "real thing", it was because he couldn't HAVE the real thing. He had a wife and family, and was dependent on his mother in law's social standing for his survival as an artist. In the film, Vermeer is obviously attracted to Griet physically, but he also clearly regards her as an EQUAL; she understands his art, his creativity, and the artistic process in ways that his wife never will or can.
I like how her and her master didn't end up hooking up or anything. everything was really subtle..like it would have been in real life. such an amazing piece of literary
@Shloerful PS. You have to respect someone to love them, and women were very much second class citizens in this age (in fact 'citizens' barely comes into it.)
Read up on it if the subject is of interest to you.
@Shloerful PPS. Rembrant was of roughly the same era, and he slept with his housekeeper while his wife was dying and afterwards. He gave her a ring, but when she tried to make him marry her afterwards by publicly bringing attention to it and trying to shame him, he had her committed to a mental institution until she died.
I don't know necessarily that the painting was more important to Vermeer than Griet herself was. I think he was fascinated with her, and found her soul and beauty alluring, and obviously there was a sexual attraction between them. I believe he cared about her, and was protective of her and he'll never forget her, but I don't think he was in love with her. If he loved her, he wouldn't have let her go. He cared about her deeply, though.
@liesjeeeWxX Yes, they were! XD But in the book there were also another character, a friend of Veermer, and the director gave his lines to Pieter. Maybe that's why this character is so ... confused? XD
And yes, in the end of the book Griet married Pieter (maybe there too). :(
I really hate the fact that women were such petty, backboneless, little more than possessions back then. Wouldn't stand for half the things that went on back then now days.
I remember absolutely loving the book of Girl with a Pearl Earring. When I found out there was a movie I went through hell trying to find it. 5 years later I've found it but the movie seems so hollow compared to the book. Unfortunately becuase its been so long since I've read the book I can't remember too much. :( I think I'll reread it.
I like the book better. The movie left out a lot of what the book had. If it didn't leave out stuff like why Cornelia was so mean to Greit and Greit and Pieter's little vists in the alley and why she does not want to take of her cap. The movie would have left me hanging if I had not read the book.
@awGT500 I liked the ending much better in the book too. I like how Greit found out vermeer took her painting at the end of his life to die looking at it, I really thing if they put that in the movie it would send a stronger message. I was also happy she married pieter even though she was in love with vermeer it was nice to see she had somebody at the end. I agree the book was much better, so much left out from the book to the movie
But he was very much at the mercy of his wife and mother-in-law. They were the financial side of the family. Without them no money- no money, no artist.
Thank you, Xsemiramiss, for making this film available on YouTube.
I wish Griet did not always have this apprehensive and diffident look on her face. The painting of Vermeer speaks of love and inner radiance. Looking at the painting, I feel she has a love for the artist that she cannot divulge ... but it's all in the eyes !
@megaswenson In the book she marries the butcher and has two kids with him. The end with Tanneke is supposed to be ten years later. She pawns the pearls and it only gets her about a months worth of a maids salary(so not very much). But at the end of the book she is relatively happy and has a good life. The book is definitely worth a read if you enjoyed this :)
@opalura I agree. The book is way better too in my opinion. Fills all the silences in the movie with beautifully crafted sentences. Its worth the time.
@opalura It is actually this way: Pieter the butcher was supposed to get 15 guilders from the meat bill they didn't pay. Pieter the son considered it as the price he paid for getting Griet. In the end indeed it should be ten years later then she got called back at the house. Got the pearls and sold them for 20 guilders. Saying to Pieter the son the Vermeer's finally paid their debt (believe it was 1 year of meat :P) keeping the other 5 guilders to herself, never spending it.
This movie made me feel awful for everyone except Cornelia and Van Ruijven. Griet had to be in love with a man who wasn't allowed to love her back, Vermeer was forced to be with a woman who didn't understand him in the least, and Catharina had to be second to a maid in the eyes of the person who mattered the most.
Jeez. That was great. Even if I red the book, the movie is absolutely amazing. And Scarlett Johansson is such a good actress, and she looks sooo much like the girl in the real painting! Aww! I wish they would only just... kiss... That scene when he touches her lips after percing her ear... RWAWR! Hehe. What a romantic movie! Loved it from the beginning til the end! :)
I... kind of wanted them to consummate the relationship at some point during the film. D: Call me a bad person, but all that unresolved sexual/romantic tension... besides, I love forbidden romances. <3
OMG it has been years since I saw this film and I read the comments before I watched this bit and I thought you were quoting I was waiting for him to say just that! The reality dialogue was such a dissappointment LOL
OMG it has been years since I saw this film and I read the comments before I watched this bit and I was waiting for him to say just that! The reality dialogue was such a dissappointment LOL
not what i expected. i can now see why this movie didnt get as many good reviews as i would have thought. i love the filming and artistic vision of this movie but it lacks drama and meat. a movie far too dull for my taste but a must see nevertheless
:( awww thats a sad ending its a freaking love web....wow.... but im sad cause obviously she like peter otherwise she wudnt have done it with him, but there is a deeper connection with the master and he obviously...no they both obviously felt something for each other.
@CAM91394 well the painting itself is obscene because it portrays a person of low status ( seen in the way her head is covered, trait of a servant) , wearing pearl earrings , which is a very pricy , its contradicting , right now it may not seem to shocking ,but at the time nobody had thought it like that .
@nahia2008 I think also because the gaze of the girl is very direct and challenging, not something that was done that often at that time, particularly for a woman and one of her class. Also, her lips are parted slightly, kind of a sexy pose.
This film is so beautiful. I don't even care that it doesn't follow the book. It's a very artistic interpretation. Everyone in the household was threatened by Griet. That added to the intensity of Catharina's reaction. Also, I believe Griet received the earrings because Vermeer died. His last painting is dated around 1675 so it makes sense that Griet would be pregnant. I don't know how people can say this film is dull or lacks drama. Maybe they just need to get in touch with their senses.
Vermeer should have stood up to Catharina, said she fell for Griet
both Vermeer and Griet ran to another place, and living hapily ever after, leaving crazy ass Catharina and her crazy family....this is what happends when you don't stand up for the one you truly feel a strong connection.
why didn't they show her marry Pieter??now the people who didn't read the book will be left hanging about where she will be.let me tell you the ending:
Griet marries Pieter, and they have two sons.Griet's father passed away and so Griet's mother lives with Griet and her family.Vermeer died too, after leaving eleven children.Cornelia grows up to be ugly.
thanks alot for posting this vid, ive never seen it so was cool, tho im glad i never bought it, was abit of a let down tbh, as an artist myself i find this acting rather bland and pouting and very pretencious, shes gorgeous but god was she boring, wheres the passion? even in the art, therewas jus this over intensity that to ME jus ruined the concept. yes i felt this deep conection from artist to subject ect blah but thats not jus what its about anyways thanks again xoxo
@363262726 i know. thats not how the book ended. there was loads of drama. i am disappointed that they didnt go by the book, and its not even a huge book. they've could've had everything in without trouble
why the fuck did they have the need to change every scene in the fucking movie !? the book was amazing down to every last detail and I was looking forward to seing the book in movie form..this mvoie practically wasnt the book anymore!!! UGHH the ONLY good choice made in this film was the casting of Griet
What the fucking shit!!!?????? Why didn't she marry pieter!!!!??????? It would of made more sence if she did in the movie than it did in the book!!! At least it looked like she liked him in the movie as where the book it's like she fucking couldn't stand him!!!!!!!! What the fucking hell hollywood!!!????? So many god damn questions left unanswered!!! FUCKING HELL!
His wife of course is acting very exaggerative but I think painting a woman like this at that time meant a bit more than nowadays... problably in our times it would be if your husband is painting his secretary almost naked ;o) i love that movie.. full of passion, love and erotic
but this is worst than sex .... she realizes he loves her ..... that servant girl has everything she does not have .... that servant girl is everything to him ...this is far more threatening than sex ......what is the point of having sex with someone when you think of someone else ....that someone else has all the power and the wife knows it that is what drives her crazy ...
because it was on of those irrationnal , "impossible" relationships ...it had to remain a fantaisy ...probably because he lacked a bit of courage too....
i guess it's not that he cheated on the wife physically. he cheated on her emotionally. another woman caught his heart. There was no passion in his eye for his wife.(that he keeps knocking up)
Although I love love love and LOVE this movie, I hate how it's so completely different from the book. I wish they would've kept the ending. And that red headed little brat needs to get a life...
I feel like this movie skipped a lot of parts that were in the book. Like her at the end trading the earrings for money, and going to live with Pieter.
Well that is what you get when you treat your husband badly. I feel sorry for the girl though, she was caught in the middle of that toxic relationship. At least she can sell the pearls to get some funds.
I don't get it. What happened at the end?

I really hate the fact that women were such petty, backboneless, little more than possessions back then. Wouldn't stand for half the things that went on back then now days.

I remember absolutely loving the book of Girl with a Pearl Earring. When I found out there was a movie I went through hell trying to find it. 5 years later I've found it but the movie seems so hollow compared to the book. Unfortunately becuase its been so long since I've read the book I can't remember too much. :( I think I'll reread it.
DarkWolfLeader 9 months ago
I like the book better. The movie left out a lot of what the book had. If it didn't leave out stuff like why Cornelia was so mean to Greit and Greit and Pieter's little vists in the alley and why she does not want to take of her cap. The movie would have left me hanging if I had not read the book.
awGT500 9 months ago
@awGT500 I liked the ending much better in the book too. I like how Greit found out vermeer took her painting at the end of his life to die looking at it, I really thing if they put that in the movie it would send a stronger message. I was also happy she married pieter even though she was in love with vermeer it was nice to see she had somebody at the end. I agree the book was much better, so much left out from the book to the movie

@Bloodnswash Oh, you should definitely read the book. It's far better than the film. After all, film says nothing.

@opalura Thank you so much for filling me in! I figured the story had been abbreviated. Thanks again!
megaswenson 10 months ago
@megaswenson No problem! Yeah, they cut out a lot what happened in the book unfortunately : /
opalura 10 months ago
@opalura I agree. The book is way better too in my opinion. Fills all the silences in the movie with beautifully crafted sentences. Its worth the time.
simal12345 7 months ago
@opalura It is actually this way: Pieter the butcher was supposed to get 15 guilders from the meat bill they didn't pay. Pieter the son considered it as the price he paid for getting Griet. In the end indeed it should be ten years later then she got called back at the house. Got the pearls and sold them for 20 guilders. Saying to Pieter the son the Vermeer's finally paid their debt (believe it was 1 year of meat :P) keeping the other 5 guilders to herself, never spending it.
esz170289 5 months ago
@megaswenson
she marries Pieter and about 10 years after she leaves the home it's revealed that Vermeer has died and left the earrings to Griet in his will
What she does with them is up to the reader...

This movie was good, but missing so many events ! so you should all read the book, its amaazing (:
Maya7346 11 months ago
This movie made me feel awful for everyone except Cornelia and Van Ruijven. Griet had to be in love with a man who wasn't allowed to love her back, Vermeer was forced to be with a woman who didn't understand him in the least, and Catharina had to be second to a maid in the eyes of the person who mattered the most.
Cornelia was a bitch, though.

darkwitch333 1 year ago
why is she so upset? how is teh painting obscene? why doesn't vermeer SAY anything?
CAM91394 1 year ago
@CAM91394 well the painting itself is obscene because it portrays a person of low status ( seen in the way her head is covered, trait of a servant) , wearing pearl earrings , which is a very pricy , its contradicting , right now it may not seem to shocking ,but at the time nobody had thought it like that .
nahia2008 1 year ago
@nahia2008 I think also because the gaze of the girl is very direct and challenging, not something that was done that often at that time, particularly for a woman and one of her class. Also, her lips are parted slightly, kind of a sexy pose.

his wife is blind. off course he painted griet, she's way more beautiful than herself, inside out!!!
alegresisi 1 year ago 2

Griet marries Pieter, and they have two sons.Griet's father passed away and so Griet's mother lives with Griet and her family.Vermeer died too, after leaving eleven children.Cornelia grows up to be ugly.
monkeycars911 1 year ago 2
@monkeycars911 In the film you can see she that she is quite pregnant. I think that implies that she married Pieter and is being a housewife.

thanks alot for posting this vid, ive never seen it so was cool, tho im glad i never bought it, was abit of a let down tbh, as an artist myself i find this acting rather bland and pouting and very pretencious, shes gorgeous but god was she boring, wheres the passion? even in the art, therewas jus this over intensity that to ME jus ruined the concept. yes i felt this deep conection from artist to subject ect blah but thats not jus what its about anyways thanks again xoxo
