I don't know where you were but I was in the S.O. in CA. The big blue building that use to be a hospital. They had us kids renovating for the higher ranked officers to move in. It was child abuse and violated many child labor laws. We were paid $12.00 a week and we had to use that to buy unscented shampoo, deodorant, soaps etc... No T.V.'s anywhere. I still have issues, but they will pass in time. It is all I have known for my entire childhood into my very late teens, it is imbedded deeply. Now I can buy anything I want from the store, but NO beans and rice. :-) Also, I wear scented shampoo and soap (vanilla, yummy)etc.. I know that some of you may not understand.
