@jostopholees pitcher hitting excuse isn't present in the AL, and in 2011 CarGo hit .003 behind the AL batting average, and his OBP was exactly on average (.317).
However, CarGo doesn't play in the AL, he plays in the NL where he is above average. Not to mention three of the stadiums that he plays a significant number of road games are VERY pitcher friendly parks (AT&T, Dodger Stadium, PetCo Park). By the way, I have been using ESPN for my stats.
Oh, and I'll also ignore the irony of rocky homer attempting in vain to call ANYONE else ignorant and closed minded because they got beat in a debate about one of his precious rockies not being as good as he wants him to be.
@jostopholees Really? Sure, his batting average wasn't the greatest on the road this year, but he did hit about half his homers in the road. Plus, he did hit .289 on the road in 2010 as well.. Plus, Coors Field does help hitters, but YOU STILL HAVE TO HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO HIT IT OVER THE WALL. If Coors was able to make anyone a power hitter, Dexter Fowler would be the next Jose Bautista
@tstarr17 Yes really. Just in 2011 [home then away]: Ba; .331 to .252. Obp: .402 to .317, Slg: .597 to .440, Ops: .999 to .757. The splits were even bigger in 2010 so I can't imagine why you would think bringing up 2010 would help your case at all. Coors field does help hitters..it helps them HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO HIT IT OVER THE WALL. Coors field can make almost anyone a power hitter. Take carlos gonzalez, for example.
@jostopholees No it can't. If it did, guys who have shit power like Dexter Fowler would be able to hit like Jose Bautista or Albert Pujols. It does help them a little bit, yes, but if you say it does help them become power hitters, then how come guys like Fowler, or Chris Nelson still can't hit homeruns? I mentioned 2010 because it was part of his career as well.
@tstarr17 Uhh, the fact that gonzalez hits for so much power at coors and doesn't away from coors lends creedence to my case. Using guys like fowler who have carrer slg percentages that barely top 100 really doesn't help you any. In fact, bringing up a guy like fowler hurts you, as he has a 100 point greater slg in coors career wise than away [a very respectable .463 at coors, .363 away]
@jostopholees I'm mainly talking about his power. You say that Coors Field helps them hit balls over the wall. I mentioned Fowler since he's our worst power hitter in our lineup. If it does help guys like him hit it over the wall so much, like you said, then why doesn't he? Coors Field only helps power, and hit the ball farther. It doesn't help you make contact, or hit the ball right where you need it to.
@tstarr17 I am talking about power, which is why I brought up everyone's SLG %. That proves me correct. Coors field DOES help make contact just because of the fact breaking balls aren't as effective. Just using gonzalez, even though this trend would apply to most rockies hitters, he strikes out 12% less at home than on the road. Coors field also helps hit the ball where needed, as evidenced by gonzalez's [same trend applies as before] 64 point higher home batting average than road.
@jostopholees True, he doesn't play quite as well on the road, but that doesn't mean he's a bad player. All I'm saying is that Coors does help hitters hit it a little farther, and breaking balls aren't as effective, yes, but they still need to be able to hit the baseball, and hit it over the wall. It won't make everyone play like Jose Bautista.
@tstarr17 I didn't say he was a bad player, just that without playing 81 games in colorado he wouldn't be looked at as an elite player that rockies fan seems to think he is.
@jostopholees Both are great players. I'd give the edge to Kemp at the plate, but Gonzalez has clearly been better in the outfield. Over the last 2 seasons, Gonzalez has had just 2 errors, while Kemp has had 10.
@jostopholees i can't stand when people say Coors is the only reason players are good. What about Yankee Stadium? Take Jeter, who hits almost all of his (few) homeruns at his own park. Does that mean Jeter is only good because of his park? No. Neither is CarGo. They're good because they're athletes. Coors field gives Cargo one of his five tools. Go ahead and root for your power hitters who can't field or run though, since according to you "elite" players need to be power hitters.
@BtAsRg I can't stand it when homers ignore the facts in defense of their own players. [btw, jeter's home/road homerun splits are only 20 apart]
I also hate when people who have limited reading comprehension abilities resort to straw man arguments because they can't counter those facts. Please point to where I said power makes one elite because I remember factoring in hitting [ba] and getting on base as well on offense. All of which gonzalez'd road dips are at HISTORIC levels.
@jostopholees it's funny that you resort to attacking my intelligence based on a difference of opinions on an MLB player. You did say you were talking about power, you also said Cargo wouldn't be seen as elite without playing 81 games in CO. Yes, Coors is a hitters park. However, it does not help baserunning, fielding, throwing, or clubhouse presence. CarGo has a combination of tools that make him elite, and the fact that he plays at Coors only helps a few of those tools (BA, HR)
@BtAsRg What's funny is you think I am attacking your intelligence based on differences in opinion. I am dealing with and presenting with FACTS. No matter how hard you try you simply are unable to counter the numbers. I said I was talking about his entire hitting package. Tstarr brought up just power which I successfully countered. LOL @ resorting to "clubhouse presence" to justify a player being elite. Playing at coors affects BA, OBP, HR and extra base hits, SLG and OPS. Next.
@jostopholees congratulations on "successfully countering" someones argument! Tell your mom about that, I'm sure she will be as proud of you as you are of yourself. It's surprising how much a strong clubhouse presence (leadership, advice, etc) can help a team. But you took my point out of context, I was saying its ALL of his tools that make him elite. You are only using a few facts (usually called stats). I am saying there are many more "facts" that make a player like CarGo elite.
@BtAsRg Interesting, you are sitting there actually saying that using stats to judge the quality of a player is a bad idea and resort to condescending posts because you CAN'T counter anything I've brought to this discussion...and you had the nerve to question why I called you out on your lack of intellect?
Oh yeah, I forgot to add, your opinion of gonzalez being elite is like having the opinion that the sun is cold, sure you can say it but the facts prove you wrong.
@jostopholees I've given plenty of facts. Sure maybe not straight numbers I don't really feel like going a googling stats for every comment. Here you go though career .298 average. He's only had 4 years so his .242 rookie year is kind of an outlier. 77 HRs. Again only 4 his rookie year, 73 homeruns in three years is pretty impressive...
Its late right now and I don't feel the need to defend myself. You're quite immature to say the least. And you're very ignorant and close-minded.
@jostopholees its a ball player you don't need to get your panties in a bunch because I think he is good and you don't... Life lesson for ya: Not everyone has the same opinions. I watch at least 150 Rockies games a year so yes, I am very biased towards my team. Yes, I had the nerve to question. That's what you do when you are having a conversation. People disagree, not everyone has the same opinions. I do know that your social skills need work. You got some maturity issues pal.
@BtAsRg Your tears and anger amuse me. I didn't say he wasn't good, I said he wasn't elite and I proved my point. Like I said, it's kinda hard to argue "opinions" when the facts prove your stance wrong....flat out. It's not my fault you can't handle being proven wrong and have to resort to juvenile insults as a result.
@jostopholees not insults just observations. I don't see how I got proven wrong, you never looked at my point of view. Don't bother responding because I'm done here.
@BtAsRg You were done a long time ago, whether you know it or not. I don't have to look at it from homer point of view, I look at it from neutral, FACT based point of view. There is no argument you can make that can counter what I've brought to the table here. You are trying to argue against facts. Surely even you can see how much of a logical fallacy that is.
@jostopholees I wasn't arguing your "facts" seriously though call them stats saying facts is just annoying. I was stating what I think makes him elite, which if you really care you can go see my previous posts regarding his numerous tools. Not arguing the stats, just pointing out there's many stats you left out, and I doubt you can find a major stat of CarGo's that isn't pretty far above average. 5 tool player, and you are far from neutral. One more time... I'm not arguing anything
@jostopholees and you should realize I wasn't out to prove you wrong, I was only saying why I disagree. I'd be interested to know what players you think are "elite"
@jostopholees nope, I never said anything you said was wrong. I gave reasons as well. You really should go read the conversation I'm pretty sure you didn't read anything I said before. One more time: CarGo has speed, power, high BA, outstanding defense, and fielding. I know, all of those things are better at home than on the road. But, that doesn't mean he isn't elite just because he plays better at home. He still has the ability to do all those things really well.
@BtAsRg Here's the thing, your reasons were subjective. Your reasons could be used to argue almost anyone is elite. My arguments are objective. They are facts. They are indisputable. One more time: Gonzalez has all of those things AT coors field. He only has the ability to do all of those things really well AT coors field. If you have such a HISTORIC difference in home/road production and get that much of a boost from your ballpark and not your ability, by definition you can't be elite.
@BtAsRg Definition of elite? Someone who excels at most aspects of the game and consistently puts up GREAT numbers despite any variable [ballpark for example] put in front of him.
@jostopholees forget it. You don't see my point, so I'm not going to try to present it anymore. Don't say all the "facts" prove me wrong, because they don't. I look at his career stats and see a great player still improving. You see a player that isn't elite if they perform better at home than away. I don't really care though, we all have our opinions. Yes, opinions, and I can back mine up just like you can back yours up. Unfortunately you didn't try to see my reasoning.
@BtAsRg I can say the facts prove you wrong because they DO!! Why doesn't that sink in? His home numbers are excellent but his road numbers are BELOW LEAGUE AVERAGE!! You can't back yours up with anything other than opinion. I back my statements up with facts. Take for example you saying gonzalez is an outstanding defender. Why, because you see him make some highlight catches? That's fine and dandy but his UZR the last 3 years has been 2, -.9 and -.6. That's literally average.
@jostopholees check your facts, league batting average on the road in 2011: .252. CarGo road batting average: .252. League OBP on the road: .315. CarGo road OBP: .317. League road slugging: .391. CarGo road slugging: .440. League road OPS: .706. CarGo road OPS: .757. Couldn't find the league average in homeruns. But no, he is not below league road average he is at or above in all the categories I listed.
@BtAsRg Well the NL league averages you gave were slightly wrong so check your facts [baseball reference] but that doesn't change the fact that 1. I never said he was below average and 2. the differences between them aren't big enough to make the distinction between average and above average and it sure as hell doesn't lend any creedence to him being elite.
@jostopholees I was using MLB averages (AL and NL) not just NL averages. NL averages are lower in almost every category, they show CarGo even farther above average. Here they are, NL road averages: BA: .249, OBP: .313, SLG: .383, OPS: .697.
You said "His home numbers are excellent but his road numbers are BELOW LEAGUE AVERAGE". I was showing you that his road numbers are not below league average at all, they are actually above average.
@jostopholees if 15 homeruns was legitimately the average per player on the road, that would make the total homerun average around 30 (assuming players hit an equal amount of homeruns on the road and at home). Only 12 NL players hit 30 or more home runs total for the year, there is no chance that the HR road average per player on the road was 15. If you could give me a source for that and prove me wrong, don't hold back.
@jostopholees You are right, he is not that far above league average in road statistics. He is above average though, and you did say he was below. As you've said numerous times, he is not nearly as good on the road as he is at home. If you add his much better home statistics to his already above average road statistics, you get a player who is, according to my definition, elite. I consider elite MLB players to be well above average and that is what CarGo is.
0:27 not may players can do that. 0:34 not many players can do that. 1:12 not many players can do that either. Not many players can do very much of the stuff on this highlight reel and that makes him elite. Not sure if there was any stolen bases, but he does that very well too. He does everything very well, and despite his home/road split for batting, very few players in the league have the amount of outstanding baseball skills CarGo has.
@BtAsRg LOL, you don't get hit. his UZR is league AVERAGE. That means he doesn't get to balls even above average fielders get to. Look at it like this, those balls he is diving all over the place for, an above average fielder makes those catches in stride. He does appear to have a decent arm though. He had a rARM of 6 in 2011.
You can't say he does everything very well though when he clearly doesn't. He simply is an average player away from coors and the numbers prove it.
I was there the night he plastered a walkoff homerun vs the cubs! LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!

@jostopholees doing things above average IS doing things well...

@jostopholees oh yeah i forgot to add.
My opinion: CarGo is elite
Your opinion: CarGo is not elite.
We both have reasons for our opinions. So yes, it is a difference of opinion no matter how you back it up.
