Roger Whittaker!!!!!!! This a classic performance of a classic Scottish traditional song by one of the greatest Scottish female singers to emerge from the world of folk music. Poor old Rog is not even in the running. Sorry!
@Gayalert69 Actually it isn't a tradiional song - or even totally Scottish. The tune is traditional and Scottish but the words were written by an Englishman called Sir Harold Boulton.
Must have lived there in one of my former lifes... Tears in my eyes when listening to the song... Have actually d been to Cullodens fields, my heart wept. Picked some heather twigs home - to a remote corner of Scandinvia...
My Scottish Grandmother used to sing this to me every single day when I was a kid. Does anybody know where to buy the song? I can only find instrumental.
Barbara's version is available on two of her compilation CDs which are still available - "The Barbara Dickson Collection" and "January February - The Best of Barbara Dikson".
you're absolutely correct! ...this is exactly how the Skye Boat Song is meant to be sung. The pipe bands play it faster as a 'marching' tune just because they have to march to it. I learned it as a small child in Scotland many, many moons ago (not telling just how many). ;) Now living in NY and was looking for the perfect vocal rendition. Barbara's is lovely and 'just right'..she evokes the entire feel of the boat out on the water carrying Bonnie Prince Charlie.
I like the Corries' version better, personally. This is nice too, though. And yes, the song is supposed to be slow. I like your post (nice way of putting it).
I'm doing this song in chourus at school, and it's a scottish medley. And everyone was like ughhh this music is a joke but I love this song and the medley is better then any of us thought!

Barbara Dickson makes everything she sings so melodic. This is my favorite version of The Skye Song - so poignant.

@BrennanKingsland This one's good but IMO one of the best versions is Roger Whittaker's.

Class. But you cannot sing it like this, unless you have an outstanding voice.. and Barbara certainly does.
