  • I'm mid twenties and i love this generation of music. Now days music promotes nothing but sex appeal and materialism. No wonder the new generation are what they are today.

  • What is a didy?

  • @usdarts ditty = a catchy lil tune

  • the guys used to dance like this in fyc.

  • @nosaj1939 know why they did? the 2 white guys in the beat went on to form fyc with roland gift after the beat split up

  • The only reason i went on this song was because didy sings 'i hear the "tears of a clown" oh i hate that song i always feel like there talking to me when it come on" so i now know why he hatesnit but next im gonna look at the other song he mentions called a house is not a home x

  • The only reason i went on this song was because didny sings 'i hear the t

  • @xvoui ha, ha, no fella. everey fucking saturday night.

  • haha, nope!

  • diddy hates that song.

  • Two Word................The Bollocks

  • God I miss those days!

  • I love it that the UK had music like this and Gary Numan, Bowie etc. while the US was still wearing flares and going to Styx concerts.

  • Rankin'''' Roger!!!!

  • Dave wakeling's still out touring as the Beat, still sounds superb but you've got to be in America to see him,he lives there these days. Saw them twice last year and its just a shot of 80's joy everytime!

  • Thumbs up if coming home by dirty diddy brought you here

  • I always think their talking to me

  • they ruined the WHOLE song. why would a sad clown be singing such an upbeat song? he wouldnt!

  • i hear the tears of a clown, man i hate that song.... only reason im here is cause diddy mentioned this song in one of his songs...

  • @b2butiful

    Same, and eminem said

"marshall your so funny man you should be a comedian, god damn! unfortunetly i am i just hide behind the tears of a clown"

  • Great stuff and good to see Bill and Ben of the flower pot men on the saxaphone..

  • Wish I could go back in time to relive it all again...

  • Brilliant! Do you remember when hearing this kind of music at the local village disco of a Friday night just got everybody up and dancing like a wild thing! I miss those days so much. I 've still got my white stilettos and glitter dust though...

  • @bradnocksmarsh

Me too, I miss those days madly. I still think we could show this lot how to party today. We really lived life then.

  • I WAS 26 THIS SUMMER OF 79 AND IN THE NO NUKES TOUR AT CAMP EDWARDS BUT I OFTEN WISHED I'D BEEN IN LONDEON WIH GREEN HAIR GETTIN SKA'D UP! I'M STILL HANING WITH ALL THE 3RD WAVE SKA AT 17TH STREET RECORDING STUDIO, YOUTUBE CHANNELS LEWP77 AND HOTDANGSTUDIOS AND ACTUALLY FEELING QUITE YOUNG!!!!!!!!!!! THE BEAT FOREVER YOUNG!

  • Man, in it's day, this shit was the bomb!

  • i need a 2tone suit :)

  • is that a young chris kamara ?

  • the was and still is a corker

  • EllennLouise - you must be a f*^&$#g zombie! If you saw this band live - sooner or later - even your dead bones would have started a-shakin! !!

  • @1hunglowly

I saw them, top band full of ska energy - not a good recording but hey its a good cover

  • @1hunglowly TeeHee -- im not quite sure bout that, but i trust you.. you should go see MCR live, they are amence (:

  • @1hunglowly THAt's no joke you'd have to be dead not to be lovin this kind of groove

  • Fucking still mint

  • no offence but this is shit

  • @EllennLouiseeMeadd just because you said "no offense" doesn't make it not offensive. get you're hate away from this brilliance.

  • @EllennLouiseeMeadd Yeah, nice way to back up your remarks.

  • @EllennLouiseeMeadd You fucking idiot.

  • @naoise1 personally i dont care, i have the right to voice my opinion and i dont like this song.

  • @EllennLouiseeMeadd so why watch it and then give a crap comment

  • How is this 1979 if "I just can't stop it" didn't come out until 1980?

  • my fav twotone group ever, love them, still got the vinyl

  • HOT!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you for posting this...my all time favorite band.

    Thank you.

  • ah haaa the memories xx

  • god if only musicians today sang about real shit instead of shite that sells cd's we would have a fantastic music industry instead of the commercialised shite thats out today

  • is it the beat or english beat?

  • @duder1010 actually it´s the beat but in the US they are known as the english beat

  • fab fab fab.....gotta love the beat

  • proper choooon

  • oh by far the best, wicked tune by a wicked group......

  • This version is even better than Smokey Robinson's original (if that's possible)... I love the way the bassist shuffles around the stage like a maniac :))

  • @cheekyhamsta you know what i agree. I love Smokey and soul music, not sure about better, as his is slower and a different style, but easily as good, and there aren't many covers you can say that about.

  • Saxa is a legend!!

  • My favorite version is the one Adam Lambert did, but this does bring back memories of a time music was indeed different. I'm a big fan of music from the 60's, 70's and 80's. The 90's kinda suck music wise. Music now is so so. We need more 'real music' . Music that comes from the heart, with feeling and real emotions. Music that touches you. Not that computerised crap. And the boring, everything sounds alike music (Miley, Justin B., Beyonce, etc.) Heard 1 you've heard them all. Nothing special.

  • I love it!

  • I absolutely loooovvveee this band!! saw dave in atlanta a few months ago but it would have been great if ranking had been there too. :(

  • Well I wasn't even born when this came out but it's on my in-car playlist, along with The Bodysnatchers - Let's Do Rocksteady. Awesome.

  • AfriSka

  • @dude75able ??? dont you mean jamaiska????

  • Still prefer the Smokey Robinson original.

  • This is Dave Wakeling - the ONE and ONLY (same dude that sang in General Public; another awesome band!)

  • ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuude bwoys what an era fantastic music ,harrington jacket brogues, yes man black and white unite

  • Bought this on '45 when it first came out and played it non stop for weeks. Brings back real happy memories of being 14, wearing a two tone dress, stilettos and thinking I was oh so grown up!

  • we feel the same exept i dont wear dresses or high heels lol

  • happy feet!

  • oh yea baby!

They do it again, showing their love for motown

  • Excellent cover, not superior to the original though.

  • can't say I agree, I think the Beats covers of this and Andy William's "cant get used to losing you" were absolutely brilliant ska versions of two good songs

  • if only music these days sounded like this

  • If only !!!

  • @liamsickle It does! I saw the beat last sunday :P

  • @liamsickle You're not far wrong there, mate. I actualy feel a bit sorry for todays youf! The crap they have to listen to! Long live Mr Weller etc.

  • @liamsickle YEAH... we'd still have a Top 40 on a Sunday night, and Top Of The Pops on a Thursday night.......... and Cd's/records to buy.

  • brilliant

  • Amazing feeling when I just listen to this.. I went to a gig of them just 4 days ago in Rotterdam (The Netherlands), it was just AMAZING!

  • good old days, fuck i feel old

  • @smithdvr Word!

  • @smithdvr same as pal 42 now some song thopugh

  • @smithdvr i hear ya well i would if i had my hearing aid in lol

  • @smithdvr Me too mate

  • @smithdvr Hahaha... Don't!!! I'm about 11 years older than you, and I don't feel any older....just WISER, fitter and better looking hahahahahaha ;-)

  • back in the day ! My favourite band saw them all but this lot hit the spot !

  • magic cover, improved on the excellent original

  • Maybe (surely...) the girl won't like it, but is there any better than that ?

  • best cover ever! wow.

  • shit i m back in the day .

  • Open tuning heaven!

  • First album I ever bought!

  • i was born in 1960,doesnt make any difference to me.a great band with a catchy tune.

  • hey dude, me too, 50,s looming,,i saw them on friday night in a barn at clun,,strange but true!! look out for barn stompers next event on myspace,, you,d love it,.

  • fantastic version...is it better than the original? I think so

  • No, but great in its own way.

  • I need a time machine to go back to 1979.

    I wish I was born in 1960!

  • A great song and a great new sound for it too!

  • the BEATles?

  • brilliant song and brilliant band.

  • fuckin awesome

  • skankin man!!! <3 <3

  • great cover.

  • what a ska classic love this song :)

  • i love this song

their new keyboard player taught me at college for 2 years

  • furkin lurves it clarke

  • They turned a soul classic into a ska classic!!!

  • God Roger looks dead young!

  • ok i stand corrected.. smokey robinson, stevie wonder and hank cosby wrote this song.. Barry Gordy was the head of the Motown thing back then.

  • BARRY GORDY ???? LMFAO

  • how many other covers have u heard?

  • BARRY Gordy? its BERRY Gordy! (Jr).

irishyankrocksinger, you give the Irish a bad name.

The Beat made a fantastic cover of an already legendary song.

  • If you don't like it. Don't comment

  • better sound would be nice for this vid

  • smokey or the beat, who cares its a brilliant up when im down. thanks for posting

  • You're "shocked" 30 years later? Give me a break, this was a breakthrough song by a breakthrough band. Smokey himself was quoted as saying he loved this, who are you to speak for him? Seriously, get over yourself, you know nothng and it shows.

  • joeGthatsme... oh i see... you know soo much more than me and are a expert on smokey and the whole soul genre itself? I never claimed to be an "expert" but as a musician and brought up on a steady diet of old school r and b all of my life... yes, i can say I do have a "bit" of knowledge in this area

  • i'm english and i stll prefer smokey's

  • I love this song. It's not an affront to soul, it is an enhancement!

I cant help but wonder if Stevie Wonder heard this and wondered why he didnt speed it up.

(I think STevie WOnder wrote the music to this for Smokey)

  • we are the british mods, make no mistake.

  • WTF???!! this is the worst cover I have ever fucking heard What a disgrace to soul music!!!! Awful!!!!

  • cover? haha

  • irishankrocksinger....It's ska circa 79. Mod had a bit of a renaissance in the UK at the time & fans of mod often liked ska.

It may a cover version of SR's soul classic but as The Beat were not and never claimed to be a soul band, are you shocked to see a ska twist to their cover?

  • tabithaMcCleod....being a hardcore R and B fan of old skool motown soul... yeah, i am "shocked"..... seems to me they did an "injustice" to Smokey Robinson's name and the whole Motown music scene altogether

  • "ah see your comment is wrong as its not soul it's SKA!!!!!

  • I'm going down the crown perry barr!

  • dave is my great uncle!

  • Love it

  • Superb tune, lots of memorys from that era. Probebly not the best cover ever but at the time it felt right.

  • It still feels right to me, but I'm old ;-)

  • you are an idiot....its nowhere near that.

  • yeah no shit yank. nothins ever as good as an original. but this is british ska, which is a totally different sound.

  • yah actually a Canadian...but agree with you nevetheless!!!!

  • what an ass

  • Hearing this song on American Dad cracked me up..

  • GO FEET

  • i saw these guys here in l.a. a year or 2 ago and they still sound great. love this sound.

  • IMO they were underrated, compared to the specials and madness.

i liked all ska, but the BEAT were that bit better than the rest.

  • There aren't that many covers that are as good as this!

  • Great cover! Smokey would be proud.

  • wow saxa & ranking really made the band complete

  • :)~

  • thanx for post
