On this date in 1969 {Mar. 1st} "Only The Strong Survive" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it would peaked at #4 and spent 13 weeks in the Top 100...
Ranked 38th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1969 chart...
Reached #1 on Billboard's Black Singles chart {for 2 weeks}
Covered versions; Elvis Presley {1968}, Billy Paul {1977}, and the Netherlands' The Tramps {2003}...
I absolutely adore listening to and watching Gerry Butler sing this song. I'm not in a romance or a breakup, but the message in this song is exactly what I need to hear right now. "Only the strong survive," indeed. God bless you, Mr. Butler.
This was one of the top 45 records on the jukebox in the cafeteria at the Eglin Air Force Base in Ft. Walton Beach, FL. I contributed many a quarters just to groove to it! Love Jerry Butler!
I never had the pleasure of seeing Jerry live but I have loved his music all the way back to his days with Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions.In these days of hard times it would be wise to take his words to heart.
@mbb72 I Checked it out.It doesn't Hold a candle to this one.Elvis' version sounded kind of contrived and druggy to me.some songs just dont fit some people .sorry
@mbb72 DA HELL with ELViS! He was a DAMN COPYCAT!! IF IT WASN'T 4 JERRY...ELViS WOULD'NT HAVE HAD A VERSiON OF THiS SONG TO SiNG. BiG UP JERRY B. #YOUARETHEMAN
@mbb72 Oh, pleassse! I certainly do not dislike Elvis, but the truth of the matter is Elvis never gave a 'kick ass' version of anything. As for Elvis's rendition of Butler's "Only the Strong Survive", it was at best quite mediocre--and I am being kind--since Elvis's sense of timing was noticeably off.

Are these not videos of him but entirely dubbed from the album?! Are there any videos of him singing his songs that are not lip-synced!?
