  • Nothing new at 12:33. Heightened media attention on child crimes breeds suspicious minds.

  • Amazing work of art...

  • HIDE YO KIDS. HIDE YO WIVES.

  • This is one of my favorites! I've enjoyed it big time, thanks.

  • Thank you SO MUCH for having the subtitles. I was afraid id have to watch it and not understand it.

  • Thanks so much for sharing this. I've been wanting to see it for a long time.!

  • im reeeli thankful that i speak german!

  • RIP Peter Lorre

  • VIELEN DANKE FüR UPLOAD DIESE FILM

    IST GROSS.

DANKE DANKE.

  • is it weird that I really admire the Chief Criminal? He's pragmatic, he's correct, and he has an awesome leather trench coat.

  • @beepandbop

It figures someone like you would admire a murdering child molester. Sick bastard.

  • @radioblueheart are you mentally challenged? The Chief Criminal is the guy presiding over the kangaroo court...the guy who orchestrated the sting.

I know reading comprehension is sadly under-taught these days, but this has to be a new record.

  • @beepandbop

The chief criminal is the main character of the title. You also strike me as some one who is a child molester. You sick perverted piece of shit. You need to be locked up some where to keep our children safe and so you can get the help you need.

  • @radioblueheart hahahahahahaha WOW. I am speechless. You may have just won the coveted Moron Prize. Damn, you really worked hard for it.

  • okay it's been fifteen seconds and i'm getting goosebumps already. i guess this has to be good

  • @sgasperx: Yes, the movie is supposed to end that way.

  • @skiandhu12

    ja das ist er

steht in seiner Filmographie auf Wikipedia

  • Danke fürs reinstellen !!!!!!

  • could anyone analytically inform me about the sound and its expressiveness and effectiveness, someone mentioned to me that this movies use of sound makes it 'special' so i was hoping someone could inform me.

  • @smileyseverywhere Most of the movie was silently filmed, with a little bit of sound film and overdubbing some silent parts if Im not mistaken

  • @smileyseverywhere

it was the first time that sound has been used as effects and not just hearing what the actors are saying. the souns appears sometime before you see the image and that was new to that time

    Amir

    Israel

  • M is just the name of the movie... fritz lang is the one who produced it...

  • Was the ending cut off or is it supposed to end like that?

  • @sgasperx yeah this upload of the movie cuts out, but that is the final scene, it just fades out at the end where the mothers are mourning their children.

  • lol

  • An amazing film, and a brilliant, classic plot.

Where there is no single hero, no one protagonist to root for, but the entirety of the city as they make mistake and revelation, and to cheer both the light and dark sides of justice as they reach out for the same bit of chaos hidden within their midst.

Even with such a gloomy ending, the resolution is satisfying, and quite realistic. Again, an amazing film by Fritz Lang, and to be sure, I am glad that it provided it for free viewing on Youtube.

  • watch this youtube.com/watch?v=gnKvBCFT-_g

  • WONDERFUL! Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

  • Thank you for uploading this masterpiece... it is rare to find.. The three Films Fritz Lang did on the screenplays of Thea von Hardou are non just great, but also important for comprehend story and modern society.

  • Classic expressionist film excel. d/l. thank- you very much.

  • Cinematic depictions of modernity and its attendant problems and/or possibilities?

  • Your channel is GOLD, Lucky. You know your movies. Thanks!

  • @conewells you're goddamn right!

  • Awkward movie on many levels. But very interesting. Thanks for posting this!

  • Neinn mann!! lass noch ein bischen tanzen

  • @grimjob69 and so are you.

  • One of the most chilling films ever made whose relevance is as great today as it was then. Peter Lorre was brilliant. I loved the criminal underworld's unspoken mantra: 'Thieves, forgers, whores, con artists, mobsters and drug dealers we may be, but even WE don't tolerate child killers.' LuckyStrike502, I bow to you, sir, for putting this movie up.

  • @MusicOTNight2096 AAhh another person who shares my opinon by think how awesome peter lorre is

  • @DrLeonardBonesMcCoy Yes indeedy. And your name makes you eternally awesome :-D

  • This is the best print I have seen yet. Thank you.

  • after this movie came out, the response from women was crazy. when peter walked down the street women some woem would pull their kids close and a lot of women would write letters to peter telling him they loved his eyes and some women would write begging him to come and whip them sexually. it was a riot. many women found him sexy but men of course only see his buggy eyes and cast him as characters.

  • not M but P.

  • this is a masterpiece indeed, it will always be relevant

  • i must have heard it 100 times before, but what is the name of the song/classical piece that Peter Lorre keeps whisteling?

  • @wolfejimmyy according to IMDB, the song is called "Le Halle du Roi de la Montagne"

    in "Peer Gynt Suite No.1, Op.46" (1876)

    Written by Edvard Grieg

I suggest searching YT to confirm, I just pasted this.

  • This is a true story

  • @mastermary2 There was a serial killer in Germany in 1920's and 30's named Peter Kurten that did very similar crimes; Fritz Land denied basing this movie off of him, though.

  • @BenB8290 Yeah, I am having a lecture about that. Peter Kürten ("The Vampire of Düsseldorf"), but also Fritz Haarmann and the butcher Georg Karl Grossmann did very similar murders.

  • @alperloos I've never heard of those other two; are they German as well?

  • @BenB8290 Yes they are. There were a couple of serial killers after World War I. Georg Karl Großmann was a German butcher who killed female prostitutes and beggars and he sold their meat at the market. Fritz Haarmann was convicted for killing 24 little boys (and he said that there were a lot more). There was another one I forgot: Karl Denke who made suspenders and shoe laces out of his victims. Yeah. It's a really disturbing subject.

  • @BenB8290 Actually after the death penalty of Peter Kürten they examined his brain and now you can view his actual brain in an American museum.

  • @alperloos I've read that. Its in Wisonsin at Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum.

  • @alperloos "Serienmord als ästhetisches und kulturhistorisches Phänomen"? XD Ich auch

  • @YehSti hahahaha :D jaaa! wie geil :)

  • @VideoRoom207 So what? Why bash LuckyStrike502 for doing the service of posting these videos on YouTube--something the archive site didn't think to do themselves? LuckyStrike502's spreading of these videos to a wider audience stole nothing from the archive site. If anything, he deserves credit for all the work he went through to put all these videos up on YouTube for us to watch. Why should he get no credit for this work, just because the archive site initially put the video together?

  • Just saw this on Blu-ray (Masters of Cinema Series). Probably one of the most influential films I have ever seen; it's a masterpiece! The Blu-ray is awesome too, buy it, it's worth every penny!

  • Thanks so much for uploading this!!

  • Thanks so much for this and 'Nosferatu.' I joined a German Film class 2 weeks later into the semester; so I needed to watch and review these before I attend my first class. Saved me a trip to the library, LOL!

  • @l0os3nup U of A?

  • @linkin49park182 No, UConn

  • Comment removed

  • @VideoRoom207 Yes, I am earning revenue from this. No, it does not mean anyone can upload this and earn revenue from it. Only partners can. It is fair. I thought of a way to share classic movies with everyone, and make money in the process. I found a good money making strategy. What's wrong with that?

  • Comment removed

  • @VideoRoom207 Honestly, you don't know what you're talking about. That Internet Archive did all of ITS work. There are NUMEROUS sites out there who provide public domain material, and 99.9% of them have advertisers. That means, they make money as well! I even provided a link over in the description to their site. If anything, I'm helping them out! It is no different for me to upload public domain material here on YouTube, than to upload it anywhere else.

  • @VideoRoom207 If people actually think I did the work, that's their problem. That's common sense. Why don't you just fuck off and spread your hate elsewhere, you inconsiderate douchebag.

  • @LuckyStrike502 that diserve a OH SNAP

  • @VideoRoom207 at least he's exposing art on the modern mrket instead of complaining about bit thinking of doing it first. so just get a life.

  • @VideoRoom207 dude thats hollywood okay. even peter lorre didnt want to do this film, and even despised doing the Mr. Moto flicks and admitted he got thru it by doing dope. why? FOR MONEY?! so sit down, shut up, and enjoy the movie. plz.

  • @JennelleBelle Peter Lorre didn't want to do this movie?

  • @davvidd19 no...he was bothered by the plot, and was scared it would typecast him as a villain (which it eventually did).

  • @JennelleBelle Isn't M the movie that made him famous? He was an unknown actor before that. Maybe he said he was bothered by the plot few years after 1931 but at the time I assure you that he saw the fact that he was cast for this movie as a big opportunity. Also, it is said, and probably this is true, that, to make the final scene more credible, Fritz Land would put Peter Lorre to be beaten for real.

  • @davvidd19 he couldnt walk for 3 days because he was kicked in the shins so badly (the scene when he tried to run up the steps).

and as for being an unkown actor...yes in the usa he was but def not in germany.

  • @LuckyStrike502 Thank you, so very much, for this upload. I've heard of Fritz Lang but never wondered much about him and his films till after watching METROPOLIS earlier this evening. Sensational. TCM is playing this right now, but I much rather watch it on my own time. Cheers!

  • What gives it the right to be in public domain? I think I read about it somewhere? Like it has to be a certain number of years out...is that right?

  • Yes, you can use the images in any project. You see a lot of public domain movie clips in TV series when the characters are watching TV. Otherwise, at the end of a movie or TV show, the Producers state: Clip of ? courtesy of .....

I Pi on u

  • @Amoniak7 Oder so wie du. Schäm dich für diesen Kommentar!

  • nice translation 36:52 "zum Teufel nochmal" = "christ"?!? :-) Damn or even "sod it!" would be better. But the "Teufel" is the devil! :-)

  • This is definitely a masterpiece

  • This is my all-time favorite German film. It helps that Peter Lorre is my favorite German actor too :)

  • its so cool that its actually Fritz lang himself who whistles, not peter lorre. Lorre couldnt whistle when this movie was made, so lang did it for him.

  • Great movie! Thanks for the upload, how convenient it has English subtitles :)

  • Peter Lorre is Brilliant in this Masterpiece.

  • every time I indulge in German art, be it cinema or otherwise, I am always blown away. This film is no exception

  • @ColdmaN5 Not that they're explicit or racy, but for some reason I always ignorantly associated oldies with la-di-da mannerisms and light hearted themes because of censorship. Yesterday I saw Broken Blossoms and was shocked by the depth of the content--child abuse, interracial relations (now that is overshadowed by the racism of the casting but in 1919 when it interracial relations were illegal it was major) I can't believe the best serial killer movie is from 1931! And the whistling! Creepy!

  • @Phishy90 I finally watched this again. The Berlin of 1931 was a left over from the twenties when Berlin really rocked. If Hitler wouldn't have came to power I see Berlin becoming one of the film capitals of the world. There were so many other amazing film makers there at that period. Not to menton actors and actresses. Marliene Dietrich comes to mind. In those days there were totally nude stage reviews and if you got an STD from a prostitute, you could sue her in the public court.

  • @mytvmemories No, Berlin in 1931 was a horrible place. Long lines of unemployed and homeless trying to get something to eat. Criminal gangs and communist riots. A woman I know who lived in Berlin as a young girl was intimidated by the pedophiles. They even put their penises through the mail slot. After 1933 Berlin became safe, and everybody got employed and got better social security. The pedophiles were locked up.

  • @Gumbypotty

Have you ever asked a jew, who lived in those times what he thinks about employment and security after 1933? I bet you would hear about worse things than pedophiles.

  • @Podager It's true that the good NS reforms in Germany were for the German people, and not for its enemies. The pedophilia promoters at the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft in Berlin were almost all jews, and they got unemployed pretty quick...

  • What do you know about it? Who are you anyway? Who are you? Criminals? Are you proud of yourselves? Proud of breaking safes or cheating at cards? Things you could just as well keep your fingers off. You wouldn't need to do all that if you'd learn a proper trade or if you'd work. If you weren't a bunch of lazy bastards. But I... I can't help myself! I have no control over this, this evil thing inside of me, the fire, the voices, the torment!

  • I saw this film when I was in college, and it is just amazing. Made shortly before Hitler came to power it shows Germany in a period that will be lost forever. So many shots in this movie have been copied over and over. I always remember the mothers voice calling out her child's name while showing the empty stairs and the balloon blowing away. I'm adding this as a favorite so I can watch it again when I get time

  • Thank You SO VERY MUCH!!! My boyfriend got this when we broke up and I have been... well... dying ;) to see it since! At least I got LaStrada!

  • Are they really saying words like "bastard" (I just wouldn't have expected it in a film of this age) or is it like Nosferatu where the names have been changed?

  • @Ashbyelliotts Yes because this is a European film and even then those films were more liberal than American Films. In the United States films were also quite liberal before the Hays Code in 1934.

  • This movie is loosely based on the story of Peter Kürten "the vampire of Düsseldorf", a german serial killer from the 1920ies/early '30ies.

In the 1920ies there were three rather famous serial killers in Germany: Peter Kürten, Fritz Haarmann, Arthur Denke, who scared the shit out of the population who weren't "used" to this kind of criminals like today.

Even the song the kids sing in the beginning is authentic but originally was about Fritz Haarmann "the werewolf of Hannover".

  • A really great movie! You can interpret so much into M.

  • Wir gucken den filme gerade im Deutschunterricht. Ich finde ihn gut.

We watch at time the movie in German. I find them good.

  • hoever translated this did a really really bad job

  • Peter Lorre is an amazing actor!!

  • THIS IS ART!

  • I don't get the crime boss' decision not to involve the cops. Not involving them will mean the cops will never know the killer is dealt with, meaning the cops will continue searching and busting up his businesses! This flies in the face of the boss' entire motivation and slightly derails the story.

  • @Kooshmeister3: Not really if you assume the criminals would have revealed the identity of the murderer to the public after killing him. When they got him, Lohmann and his men allready knew his name und who he was. it would have been easy to check if the dead person was him.

  • @Kildarby I confess I didn't think of that. That makes sense.

  • truly a masterpiece! Thank you for uploading this great movie

  • amazing !

  • Thank you for posting this! It's fantastic how they made movies back then compared to present. I find black/white horror movies scarier than the modern ones.

  • @PhilseXO this ain't a horror film.

  • Powerful film ,I love it and it's one of the top from its era.

  • is this complete? it ends so suddenly

  • thank you for uploading this ^^

  • OMG! u r my hero! i have been looking for this for almost 5 years

  • excellent movie....thanks a mill for the upload..i had search for this one alot but couldn't find it anywhere....thanks again.

  • Thank you for posting it. I almost forgot this movie.

  • @moeloehoe This movie is public domain. If it wasn't, being a YouTube Partner, I wouldn't be able to upload it and earn revenue from it.

  • @LuckyStrike502

does public domain also mean that it would be legal, to use just parts of the movies

in a video clip? cause i´m doing a musicvideo for my band and would like to use some scenes in it.

please answer back cause i don´t want to do something that could cause me trouble.

    thank you

and thank you for uploading all this great "back in the day" movies.

sorry for my bad english i´m a german.

  • @dazerkone Yes, you can use anything in the public domain however you want to use it.

  • @LuckyStrike502

    great!

    thank you

  • @dazerkone From my understanding, yes.

  • @dazerkone

I really want to see it you cant get anywere in america

  • A guy from the USA uploads M. That is funny and well done.

    Thank you.

  • Wow, the Bar-Lady is cool! ^^

  • Oh mein Gott, dieser Schatten..Das ganze ohne Musik.. wirklich gruselig!

  • I lieb diesen Film! Er ist einfach grossartig!

  • alte deutsche Kunst!

  • Great movie! Thanks for uploading this.

I had to get used again to the german language, since I usually watch all movies in english.

  • I think that every student should be made to watch this movie. It raises some interesting questions about punishment and justice. A difficult but worthwhile film to watch. Danke.

  • well, 1:13:40. the transparent person moving from right to left, carrying something.

  • What's happening at 1:13:36 ??

  • First rate job as far as the subtitles are concerned. Thanks LuckyStrike502.

I'm sure it takes tremendous effort to do so. This film contains many German idioms and Berlin expressions, so it is difficult to translate these into English.

  • Just discovered your channel...

    A treasure !

    Thanks a lot !

I added you as "friend" before reading your words about it..sorry...The main thing is that you and your channel are here !

  • awesome movie. loved it. depressing ending though.

I liked that throughout the entire movie there was no background music.

  • Does anyone know the literal translation of the words being spoken n Elsie's Chant ? -- "Just you wait a little while the evil man in black will come. With his little chopper he will chop you up" -- It almost sounds like she may be repeating her first two words or even counting eins, twei at the beginning of the chant...

  • Wait Wait

    only a little while

then comes the black man to you

    with the little chopeper

He will make you into little pieces of meat

    you're out

VERY literally translated, and as well as I could hear it. She is repeating the word "warte" (wait) at the beginning, but she doesn't say einz zwei, but she adds the german suffix "chen"(it means "little") to the end of some of her words, which makes it rhyme.

  • Thanks. I could hear the "warte, warte", so I knew the english subtitles were not translating the verse exactly. I thought maybe they were translating "warte warte" to the whole phrase "just you wait a little while" - but I couldn't tell what she was saying after that. Thought it kind of sounded similar to einz zwei...like maybe she was saying "wait and wait for one two whiles"...I figured I was probably wrong. Thanks for the clarification...

  • Could you provide the German text? As it is said by her? Translating the English back to German doesn't seem to work...

  • warte warte

nur ein weilechen (thats not gonna translate on most translators, I'll explain it)

Dann kommt den schwartzen mann zu dir

    Mit dem kleinen Hackebeilchen

macht er kleinen fleisch aus dir

weilechen is probably not gonna translate, and I may be wrong she may be something else its hard to hear. But if it is weilechin, it means literally a very small amount of time. Hope that helped.

  • Thanks. That makes much more sense then what I was trying to come up with. I couldn't understand "weilechen", "Hackebeilchen"
