True, you can smash the whole board to get the card, but 1) that takes an excess of energy to do 2) it's much faster to pinpoint 3) it's embarrassing that you have to go to such extents 4) other players will think you are an absolute loser 5) Japanese people are refined, doing a barrel roll on top of a game is not refined.
I think that the reader of the cards in chihayafuru is far more better than the one in this video. It just hurts my ears with that squeaky voice. I think no one smashes the cards like Chihaya does almost everyone plays like the queen.
I'm from Brazil, and when I saw Chihayafuru, I was completely in love with karuta! It's so amazing, and I keep learning a lot with all of those animes!
I get that the clothing is traditional, but it just seems hella inconvenient. I can totally see it happen that you swipe a card on the opponents side and completely ruin the deck xD.
Also find the way the poems are told kinda... annoying at time. Yet i still enjoy watching Chihayafuru. It made me look up karuta and it brought me here :).
@YeroJero not me. I mean, I like Chihayafuru, but I've known about this game LOOOOOOONG before Chihayafuru, since I played this once in my college's Japanese class and Japan Club.
Chihaya's love for Karuta is spreading though out the fans and I'm one of the fans that got hit by that and now I want to learn all about Karuta and all about the hidden meaning for each card of the past like how Chihaya learned from Kana-chan.....thumbs up if you are here to know the hidden meaning of the poems like Chihaya
@SpaceClown404 Doesn't matter as long as you get the correct card. Hell, if you want, you can smash 6 cards out of the way, as long as the right one is in the ones you blew away. Or so I've been taught by Chihayafuru, hehe.

Actually, when I played it, if you hit the wrong card you had to get rid of a point.
