I vacuum my shades every 6 months. If I don't use decorator fabric which is treated to be stain-resistant, I spray the shade with Scotchgard before installing. I once splashed tomatoe sauce on a shade installed over my kitchen sink and it wiped right off!
Those "plastic roman batons" can also be wooden dowels and you can get them at any Home hardware store. They work just as well.
