  • Ya know somethin'? Ebert looks like the fat guy in the afterlife waiting room who died by choking on his food, doesn't he?

  • If there's one thing I hate in this world it's fucking movie snobs like these 2 pair of wankers. When I want the opinion over a movie I haven't seen, I don't go to the tabloids, newspaper, magazine, tv show or things like that, I go to THE PEOPLE! Every day joes and janes like us commenting here.

  • @afa78djd then why did you look for this video and watch it?

  • @dante224real1 So I could come and talk SHIT! durrrrrr.

  • @afa78djd think of all the children you could be feeding or women you could be having sex with in the time it took to write that

  • Me and my brother AND sister all loved this movie. We watched it a few times and laughed at every joke. I guess it's different for kids. I could watch it as an adult now and I doubt it would be the same, but I think it's silly to expect just 2 guys to review a movie for 280,000,000 people. You just can't squeeze that many people into ANY two people.

But gahhh... the nostalgia. Time never stops killing the past. Better get busy people.... make some good memories worth remembering!!

  • ghosbtuster clone what the fuck?!? these guys for real....???

  • @Astr0wave its basicially a ghostbusters role reversal. think about it

  • I give this review two thumbs down

  • Beetlejuice is awesome! What were these guys on?

  • @squamish4244 theres gonna be a sequel of beetlejuice film and Michael Keaton atached in it...its unclear about the release date

  • I find this review very difficult to masturbate to.

  • "there's no comic energy behind it"! How obtuse can they be? Keaton gave a totally energetic comedic performance!

  • Well, let's just say I enjoyed the animated series better back in the day. Yes, it's basically a comedy and the cartoon delivered the jokes better. The jokes in the movie just don't work for me.

  • @Tron239 Let me rephrase. Many movies Siskel & Ebert trashed back then have become cult classics (including Edward Scissorhands). I feel they would have reconsidered their reviews had they known the popularity growth of these films.

Its extremely hard for me to value their opinions when they compare Beetlejuice to Ghostbusters. That's far from professional.

  • @Versethirteen reconsidering reviews because of a films popularity would also be highly unprofessional. that's what rolling stone does.

  • @07foxmulder Its funny you mention that. Siskel received a lot of online attention for his flip flopping review on Blade Runner. Could the directors cut of Blade Runner really have changed his mind that much? Or was it the fact that Blade Runner became a huge cult classic? Or perhaps both?

  • @Versethirteen to be honest i believe that someones opinion can change over time about something. for example; when i first bought radiohead's "kid a", after multiple listens, i didn't like it. 4 years later i listened to it again and i loved it. something clicked. i'm cool with people changing their opinions if it's something personal, but when people do it out of pressure, or because they feel like they have to, it bothers me. to answer your question.. i have no idea lol

  • GET OUT I LOVE THIS MOVIE.

haha I guess it's pointless to get mad at them since this was reviewed so long ago, but I love this movie, loved it as a kid(even tho some parts scared the crap outta me) and I still love it as an adult.

  • I see no resemblance between Ghostbusters and Beetlejuice. Completely different characters. The Ghostbusters were out to help people solve their ghost problems, while Beetlejuice is a fraud who is only out for his own interests and pretends as though he cares about helping others. Beetlejuice is still one of the best films of 1988.

  • i always wonder at what point in their lives they had their brains replaced with tuna salad...

  • How the fuck was this like Ghostbusters?

  • All the movies Siskel & Ebert trashed back then have become the cult classics of today.

  • @Versethirteen Oh really? Did North become a cult classic? Did Batman and Robin become a cult classic? Did the Super Mario Brothers Movie become a cult classic?

  • That guy on the left is the worse! She talks trash about every flim!

  • I hate these guys, they trash talk on everything they watch.

  • i summon beetlejuice on their asses....

    beetlejuice........beetlejuice..........beetlejuice!!

  • How can you not like Betelgeuse? He's the ghost with the most!

  • I saw it as a kid and I loved it. Haven't seen it as an adult so I can't really say if I'd agree with them now.

  • Say what you like about either Siskel and Ebert and their dislike of Beetlejuice but to their credit I think they genuinely attempt to be a constructive in their critical dissection of the movie. Many other critics can be quite nasty and get personal but I didn't get any sense of that from these two guys. Fundamentally there's no nice way to say you didn't like anything, never mind a movie.

  • Great example of Roger and Gene being as wrong as they ever were.

  • Wow...these guys really don;t seem to have much opinion in regards Tim Burton. They more or less slated edward scissorhands too...I do actually think Siskel and Ebert are entertaining but mid way through the eighties and into the nineties they really seemed to become old men. Then Siskel started dying and Roger Ebert seemed to perk up a bit at the news...then felt a bit guilty about it after Siskel actually died and did a tribute.

  • Ghostbusters clone? That's just lazy reviewing.

  • idiots didnt even mention the soundtrack or the grest dinner scence beetlejuice is a classic and the music in it is timeless

  • Siskel and Ebert compared just about every special effects comedy to Ghostbusters during the 80s.

  • full of shite him, shite talker.

  • Siskle is a horrendous critic in particular- both in retrospect get almost every film review wrong- they were so off the mark in terms of the zeitgeist of movie making in the 80's and 90's it's actually slightly comic. I think the only reason these guys got so much mileage out of their programme was because they seemed to have inordinate access to trailers...I have to say that i do find them entertaining though.

  • Oh, come ON! Every performance in that movie is perfect; Michael Keaton's performance in particular was really entertaining to watch.

Ghostbusters clone? Alright, Ghostbusters is a brilliant film. It's nostalgic-gold for me. That being said, I never thought it was that funny. I might be killed for saying this, but I think Beetlejuice is a LOT funnier.

  • @GeddyYeti2112 i agree 100%

  • i only agree with them about the beetlejuice character. in all his scenes, i wanted him to leave.

  • Thumbs down, I can why they made fun of those critics in the cartoon.

  • Really, guys? Really?

  • Really? Two Thumbs Down for Beetlejuice?

    Gimme a break! This movie's a classic.

  • It's funny how all the things that resonate with general audiences go right past these guys on this and other films

  • I don't agree entirely with what they're saying, but I agree with the verdict. A lot of people love Beetlejuice, but I've just never been a fan.

  • Siskel is totally wrong. Michael Keeton is what made this movie.

  • Comment removed

  • So what the hell do these guys panties get wet for? Fried Green Tomatoes??

You can't please these guys unless you make them cry.

  • They're right. This move was more annoying than funny.

  • I loved this movie. I must have seen it ten times or more, fond memories indeed.

  • These guys are cunts. who pays them for this none sense bullshit

  • So right.

  • Gene Siskel was such buzzkill. I never agreed with him...

  • This movie is extremely original and way ahead of its time. And michael Keaton is perfect as Beetlejuice!!!

  • well we all know how much Roger Ebert loves safe, goofy comedies...

  • thsi movie ROCKED!

  • Did the ghostbusters call on outside help? i don't remember that part

  • @TheMooseCooks Hah. I was just thinking exactly the same thing. Hilarious.

  • @TheMooseCooks I think he's implying that the ghostbusters themselves were outside help and Sigourney Weaver called on them.

  • jaw dropping talk!

  • Ghostbusters? REALLY?

Thats like saying the Ring was a ghostbusters clone. Its just fucking ridiculous and makes no sense.

Beetlejuice was the best troll ever. EVER.

If I were a ghost, Id be equally as obnoxious as he was.

  • This movie is an absolute classic! Charming to the max

  • Nice to know people respect other's opinions.

  • Horrible review. They got everything wrong.

  • NICE FUCKING REVIEW

    crotch grab

  • Yea it's just kinda does remind me of Ghostbusters a little, but for the most part it's really different

  • 33 people like beetlejuice and dont know who siskel and ebert are

44 people like beetlejuice and know who siskel and evert are

  • Like Roger Ebert, when I first heard the title 'Beetlejuice' and took one look at the movie poster, I also thought the whole movie was just going to be a charming gentle comedy all about a goofy young couple trying to fix up a house...

Imagine how horrified I was when all the ghost stuff started happening! It's like when I watched Die Hard and I thought it would be a nice marital drama about Bruce Willis and his wife, but then all that violent terrorist stuff started happening... :(

  • Movie snobs... The word pretentious doesn't quite do these movie snobs justice. This is one of the most unique and original movies in history down to it's score and they dumb it down to "it wasn't that funny."

  • Comment removed

  • their expectations hinder their ability to just enjoy something unique

  • Why do they keep comparing it to "Ghostbusters?" Because it has ghosts?

  • Ghostbusters clone?! Oh yeah, because Michael Keaton playing a ghoulish comedic nutcase just SCREAMS Bill Murray and Dan Ackroyd fighting ghosts.

    THAT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE, EBERT!!!!

  • fools

  • 1:08 - :14 Giving it to her the rat like it's normal is funny, kinda like when Mork chooses a manniquin for a girl friend.

  • Ghostbusters clone? WTF!

  • @Paradox3002 diddo

  • This is the first movie I ever watched. I loved it when I was a kid. Watched a couple years ago and realized how incredibly trippy it was, lol. I'll always have fond memories of it.

  • Beetlejuice a Ghostbusters clone? I'm surprised they didn't call Robocop a Terminator clone (and yes, I know they liked those movies) Also, saying "A little bit of Beetlejuice goes a long way" doesn't count when a character has 17 minutes of screentime in a 90 min. movie.

  • ghostbusters clone?? uh HELLO?? I doubt it

  • Wow. These guys are way off! This movie is absolutely unique, engrossing, wacky, bizarre, outrageous, and extremely funny. All of the characters are amazing. When I first saw this on HBO back in the 90s, I had to watch it every time it played. I thought it was spellbinding, and unlike anything other movie ever made. It's incredibly creative. The movie has endured and become a classic. Apparently they just didn't get it.

  • @MillionthUsername Apparently they just watched half of the trailer and make their own version.

  • i kinda have to agree with them. The film just keeps throwing new stuff at you without really going into depth regarding any of it. It's watchabele popcorn entertaniment but nothing more, sorry. i like Burton's other films better.

  • I like Siskel and Ebert but boy did they miss the mark one this one. "Ghostbusters" clone? Are you kidding me?

  • i disagree this movie is a cult classic my dad rented this movie when i was 7 years old in 1991 and laughed all the way to the end!

  • I Agree with them, there is no comic energy and I was waiting for it to get better but the characters are transparent and I felt indifferent towards them, ultimately I felt unsatisfied.

  • these guys suck ass at movie critics... this is why their is no show for ebert anymore,, cuz he sucks at being a movie critic,, their is no job for movie critics anymore, becouse of shit like this,, the only movie critics their is now,, are the youtube movie critics,, from regular ppl that just post a video,, much better movie critics,, thene these SUPPOSEDLY professional critics lol,, this movie is one of tim burton's CLASSICS,, these guys wouldnt kno a good movie if it bit them in the ass

  • @JOKAWILD26 They aren't horrible movie critics if your only reason for saying they are is that you disagree with their opinion.

  • @youthboy14 They are when they claim a movie about ghosts beating living people is a Ghostbusters clone, and act as if BJ was in the movie longer than he was.

Throw in that they wanted to remove the titular character and totally missed the mark on what the audiences would think, and you get a pretty horrible example of movie criticism.

  • @JOKAWILD26 classic?!? this retarded Hollywood peace of garbage??

Its made to wheal in beetlejuice fanboys and failed to have anything to do whit the beetlejuice cartoon.

FFS i was a kid when this ass-fest was released and it thot me the meaning of "fail". btw thank you for using caps. i might have missed a sentence in witch you where full of shit. made me laugh thou, keep on commenting.

  • @Ingamevirus The fact that people still remember this movie means it is a classic. That you don't like it is immaterial.

And the cartoon obviously came later, seeing as it is obviously set after the movie, after the ghosts save the house and Lydia starts living in it.

  • @Ingamevirus the cartoon came after the movie, and TIM BURTON was the producer for the cartoon serries for beetlejuice to

  • @JOKAWILD26 Oo my bad then. i apologize. but it still is only interesting "flick" and far from the "movie" category.

  • Beetlejuice is a classic and innovative for the time that it came out!

  • @Pozorrogo agreed

  • How can they have the gall to call it a clone of "Ghostbusters"?! You can't find two very different films. If anything It's slightly similar to that movie but in reverse. Both movies have very different styles of humour as well. The humour in "Beetlejuice" at times is blacker. It's one thing not to like the film but to give the reason that It's a clone of "Ghostbusters" is a crock of shit!

  • Cant believe they didnt like this one---Oh well---even pros mess up once in awile.

  • WTF, This is nothing like ghostbusters!!

  • How the fuck is this anything like Ghostbusters?

  • @windowsVD

    Other than having ghosts?

  • @windowsVD haha right? thats exactly what i was thinking. NOTHING like ghostbusters.

  • @windowsVD its like the reverse of ghostbusters, they ghosts were hiring a "pro" to get rid of the living.

  • tries to hard? hmm..I've always found Beetlejuice to be one of the most economical big special effects movies.

  • Burton's only truly classic movie is Ed Wood.

  • Siskel and Ebert never knew what to do when it came to Tim Burton's movies, so they mostly ended up praising it and criticizing it at the same time. But let's be honest, their opinions on the acceptance of a movie were always hits and misses.

  • saw this in movie theater ... hated it... saw it recently .. still hated it

  • shut the hell up siskel and ebert, u don't know u stuff, u lost the magic.

  • ALEC BALDWIN SHOULD LAY OFF FATTY FOODS. ROGER EBERT NO LONGER HAS THE JAW TO ENJOY HIS FATTY FOODS!!!

  • Holy shit that was Keaton as Beetlejuice?

I didn't even know that was Baldwin either.

  • lost some respect for these two after watching this, but they were entitled to their opinion.

  • its nothing like ghostbusters wow eberts a idiot this movies awesome

  • They don't "seek outside help to get rid of ghosts". The ghosts are trying to get rid of the humans. Its kind of like the opposite of Ghostbusters. The ghosts are being haunted by humans.

  • I agree with them here, this, like many of Burton's films, try far too hard to be different.

  • this is what happens when old ppl talk about movies!! the think everthing is suppose to be like the godfather or something!

  • These guys hate a lot of good movies. I just watched their review on The Professional and they both trashed it and gave it 2 thumbs down. Before that, I watched their Deep Blue Sea review and they gave it 2 thumbs up which is retarded.

  • @HolySasquatchTurd Ebert also reviewed Kick-Ass (wich is one of the greatest 2000 movies along with the Lord of the Ring trilogy) saying that is bad, violent, dirty, gruesome and rude.

Oh, yeah, while he liked the South Park movie and the Beavis and Butthead movie!!!

  • @DeepEye1994 Cause Kick-Ass Sucked-Ass

  • @Jigsaw082 8.0 positive votes on IMDb, 85% positive reviews from SELECTED top-critics on Rotten Tomatoes, called "delightfully dynamic" by the MARVEL comic's writer, generally well reviewed by the connoisseurs of the genre and critics and it grossed 96,188,903 dollars on a budget of only 28 million dollars.

...Only Ebert's lickers, IDIOTIC mothers or old pussies can dislike that movie. YOU silly haters SUCK-ASS. end.

  • @DeepEye1994 I don't know about Beavis and Butthead, but Roger gave the South Park movie a very poor review. I believe his exact quote was "the bar has been lowered"

  • WHAT?!

They would both hate movies today with all their special effects.

  • Way Too Much Michael Keaton Hammery.

  • Surprisingly, I liked this movie for all the reasons Siskel and Ebert hated it. Certainly they should've elaborated on the neitherworld and focused less on the comedy, but that was because the original screenplay which focused on those elements was rewritten for more of an audience-friendly film. The special effects then which were definitely special then is now considered a dead form (stop motion over computers)

For more check out my review of the animated spinoff on my channel!

  • Ghostbusters clone? That's BS

  • what the fuck is wrong with these idiots?

  • My friends, what Roger Ebert said WAS he walked in not knowing ANYTHING about it. It could have been a "Ghostbusters" and "Money Pit" clone. He though it COULD have been and it really wasn't. Roger didn't know what to expect. But he seemed to like everything except the title character. Keaton... he hated the one-man show that he brings.

Well, to each their own. This was one of my favorite movies as a child.

--Love For All of You (Including these guys), Dane Youssef

  • And whyyyyyyyyyyyy wasn't there a sequel? They could of made three at least.

  • A little Micheal Keaton goes a looooooong way.

  • This is one of my favorite movies.

  • wow these guys trashing a good movie what a surprise haha what a joke ghostbusters clone please..

  • I don't care what these two idiots say, this is a brilliant movie that Micheal Keaton should have gotten an academy award for. Amazing movie! Amazing performance! Enough said. These guys should have been fired after this review.

  • ghostbusters clone.........ummmm yeeeeeeeeeah. that shows that these guys dont know what they are talking about. its nothing like ghostbusters. and he refered to the beetlejuice character as someone from another world. ummm..noooooooooo, hes a ghost you dippyshit

  • What is this bullshit about ghostbusters clone? Why are those two movies being compared? Ghostbusters has almost no similarities to compare with Beetlejuice! their entire argument... or review in this case, is totally invalid... and retarded.

  • the special effects aren't there just for the sake of special effects, all the twisted furniture and sets and weird stuff is meant to reflect beetlejuice's mind, it reflects how he perceives things... it's called expressionism, these guys should learn a little about films

  • Very unique picture. Though called "Beetlejuice," it's more about Oliver and Barbara.

It's ironic after this they casted him for Batman when I always thought he would have been perfect for The Joker--as you can see here for his role as the Beetle-Eater himself.

I loved The Beetlejuice specifically when I was a little kid... I wished he was in it more. He only has 14 mins. They gave him his own spin-off. Now, I wished the others had more screen-time.

    --Still A Fan, Dane Youssef

  • Hmmmm I love this film but now that I think about it...is not exactly because of Beetlejuice...yes he is funny but the whole movie relies on other characters...and Beetlejuice did get obnoxious towards the end...when he wouldn't just go...it's a bittersweet relationship with his character lol

  • Wrong Wrong WROOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGG!!!!

  • I really really enjoyed this film when I was 13. I was thought it was a charming unique interesting funny film.

  • NO COMIC ENERGY???? They are crazy!!! Michael Keaton was hilarious, especially in the the "commercial scene" where he is trying to sell himself to them LOL! "WOOAA (falls on his back to the ground) I got demons running all through me" LMAO classic! This is what happens when you have middle age men review movies

  • Every review these guys do, they complain about special effects. Are you kidding me?

  • @jackanthem90 - GB was in 1984 and BJ was in 1988. Maybe GB was still fresh in peoples' minds in 1988, but the only similarity as both involve spirits from the Afterlife. GB involved the spirits as a threat to the world in an epic fashion, and BJ is about two dead people, three live people moving in. BJ is more personal, whereas GB is a spectacle.

Both are successes in their own rights, but the more generalized concept of GB does make it more "accessible" for more due to its simpler nature

  • Ebert surprises me in not knowing the movie quickly turns from being a "Money Pit" clone to a "Ghostbusters" clone (which it isn't - "Ghostbusters" has a completely different premise and execution). Maybe "Ghostbusters" is referenced because the font used for the opening credits is similar.

The movie has achieved cult status, along with others like "Death Becomes Her". There is comic energy, but not every movie can be made to fill every aspect of the "lowest common denominator" audience

  • Wow, they were really off on this one.

  • Siskel and Ebert have always lacked the ability to accept new ideas. They complain about how everything is old hat in other movies, but then when something truly experimental comes out, they pan it and help maintain the environment where only the old hat crap can survive.

  • I seriously think the issue with both Siskel & Ebert here is that, even as Ebert said, they went in expecting something that this movie wasn't about, and came out disappointed because of it.

Sorry guys, but that's your fault for bad research and poor expectations, rather than this being a bad movie. Which it isn't.

    BEETLEJUICE FTW!!

  • They were out of their friggin minds. This is why I don't listen to critics. They have no sense of humor. They over analyze everything to death.

  • nope. dont agree. i loved beetlejuice and found it funny. dont speak for my humor pls :P

  • They were so wrong on this one!!!!!!

  • Fuck movie critics! Most people love this movie, Keaton is brilliant in it.

  • @jc790 - "F-word" aside, Michael Keaton's timing is pretty much spot-on in this film, which is why his character works. I can't fathom other actors trying to do the role, because they wouldn't "get it"... or "get it right".

  • Introduced me to Michael Keaton and been a fan ever since.

  • "If this were a comedy act for about 40 minutes, you would walk out after 10 and say 'who needs this?'; it's not funny."

Oh, hush Gene! You were a great film critic and I miss you dearly, but sometimes you were WAY too cynical.

  • talk about a finger of the pulse.

  • Hey, reviewers review movies for other reviewers, not the movie-going audience.

  • I have said it before, They suffered from professional "Hurrumphness!" Stuffy Stodgy Coot Critique, missing the point entirely. Beetlejuice is suppose to be obnoxious, Duhh! He is the danger sign to crossing over but hillarious to observe.

  • Oh, they got it so, so, so wrong.

  • Wow, one of the all-time worst movie reviews. Now that this movie has gone down in history as a classic flick, it is even more embarrassing for these two "experts" of cinema. Well, the one that is still alive, anyway.

Seriously, Michael Keaton's role in this movie is fantastic and brilliant. He is hilarious, and a perfect counter to the goody-two-shoe of the husband&wife.

It's not a flawless film, obviously (modern effects would make it better), but it's beautiful, captivating, and original.

  • I don't agree with their assessment of this movie either, but wow, all this nasty shit you people are saying about them sounds unduly hostile. You people are taking it WAY too personally.

  • how the fuck is this a ghost busters clone? To these guys any movie with ghosts is a ghost busters clone i guess. The sixth sense = gb clone

  • I always wanted them to re-review a movie (such as this) 5 or 6 years after they first did to see if their opinions changed.

  • Siskel & Ebert suck man! Beetlejuice was awesome!

  • I dunno, I always found this movie to be crude and annoying. A few of the visual gags were amusing, but most of it was just... well, "obnoxious."

  • remember seeing it in the theater... thought it was the worst movie I ever saw. Micheal Keaton was wacky = unfunny and annoying

  • I get what they said about ghostbusters, but this movie i A LOT better than either of them are making it out to be.

  • all movies from the 80's are the greatest, the 80's as a whole were the greatest times ever, wish they never ended they were so original & fresh!!!

  • @rrrjjjmmm100 Your right the 80s were indeed original and fresh. I can't think of any other decades that were so original and fresh.

  • ghostbusters clone.... the fuck?

  • @gtsport02 yeah, they go to an outside source to get rid of a ghost. so paying a guy to do my taxes is a copy of ghostbusters? i love gene sikel and roger Ebert, but we can all agree that they were off this time

  • dipshits

  • Booooooooooooo! Beetlejuice is awesome! Booooooooooooooooooooo!

  • Ebert, you fat worthless fuck. I hope you chock on a mountain of dick.

  • @3rdsnowleopard Well, he no longer has a jaw, so...
