  • R.I.P. Pete Appleby, 1928 - 28 Jan 2012

  • What a break! A Gitar Break.

  • "Don't you draw the Queen of Diamonds, boy, she'll beat you if she's able; You know the Queen of Hearts is always your best bet." "Desperado" The Eagles

  • "Never hit 17 when you play against the dealer, for you know the odds won't ride with you." "Summer Wages", Ian Tyson

  • I'm still waiting for a song called "Deuce of Clubs"...

  • Jack To A King - Ned Miller

Deck Of Cards - Wink Martindale

  • Tally-ho! Ol' Boy . .

  • ace of spades - link wray

  • Sonic Syndicate > Lonnie Donegan

  • Pete Appleby the best drummer Lonnie ever had.....i saw him play once live when he was about 60 in a club backing some band which i dont remember...and he blew everybody away.....he was in a class of his own and ill never forget it!! He was 60 god damn it but he looked like 20 the energy he had.

  • Ah, good ol' skiffle.

  • Deck of Cards, Wink Martindale

  • This man is TIMELESS !

  • Great song and well played.

  • The music around this time was the starting of what we know to as rock& roll.

  • Not really my type of music, but it's cool to hear this. I wasn't familiar with skiffle or Lonnie Donegan until recently. It's kind of like finding rock n' roll's missing link.

  • I really love this! These are seriously good musicians - the harmonies at 1:35-1:45 are really beautiful. It reaches a neurotic intensity almost worthy of Beethoven! Drummer is fantastic as well. My other LD favourite is Gamblin' Man - I think the studio version is better than the live version which is available on the net - both are well worth a listen. Thanks Lupine for posting!

  • my tutor was lester penman. most of the succesful glesga drummers came out from under his wing. he was a wee bit mad like all self rescpecting drummers should be.showaddypaddy

  • the glesga man taught britains rock and rollers the right place to go. a treasure

  • @showaddy11 he might have been born in glasgow, but he considered himself to be english, and even released an album called "An Englishman Sings American Folk Songs"

  • The drummer Pete Appleby was the teacher of both my current drum teachers, it's awesome to see the guru of my guru perform!

  • Sounds great in black and white!! I think these guys just wrote songs and played them, nowadays everybody seems to worry about how it sounds, not what it is !

    Thanks for posting these.

  • IVAN CHAPMAN .

  • wot a GREAT drummer

  • Great !!! - Erkele

  • sonic syndicate sucks, these guys rule.

  • Sonic syndicate doesn't have a fraction of this groups talent. The can play power chords (easy versions of real chords) and bob their head. Not REAL talent.

  • These genre's aint even the same, OR even discussable!

Sonic Syndicate is one of the best Melodic Deathmetal of the world.

    EE DD

  • @Zattara92 Melodic Deathmetal? ...really?

  • Wonderful.

  • Great song.

  • Excellent post, classic tune

  • Some of the best drumming I have ever heard.

  • OMG..... Sonic syndicate - Jack of diamonds 999999999999999999999999 times better

  • agree

  • You english folks will never know what Lonnie Donegan means to people of Concepción, Chile. We, the skiffle followers (the only ones in america -north and south) absolutely love him!

  • This song is about rye whiskey.

  • This was the man responsible for popularizing skiffle ! Excellent song

  • Dylan, the great tune thief, claimed to have written this ! Blind Lemon appears to be oldest recording but who can say he wrote it.

  • What a great drummer Pete Appleby was, used to see him at Barnet Jazz club with Mick Mulligan's band. He would do a 20 minute solo while tha band went back to the pub for another beer. Sorry to see him leave Mick Mulligan, but The Nick Nicholls moved from Lonnie to Monty Sunshine's band.

  • You are spot on there. He is way ahead of his time with his Jazz like fills he is clearly a lead instrument on this anyway.

  • Petes my step grandad and les bennetts is my actual grandad.

  • is he saying jack of diamonds is lucky?

  • tarbox ramblers do the best version of this

  • I love his does your chewing gum lose its flavor overnight?

  • I thought Blind Lemon wrote this? His version is better anyhow

  • It's a folk song... some drifter during the depression most likely wrote it, and it's been performed by dozens of people.

  • Where can I find more cards?

Lonnie Donegan - Jack O' Diamonds

    Motorhead - Ace Of Spades

  • wonderful!

  • Good song!

  • Who can tell me if there are a version of this song were sung by John Fogerty or the blue ridge rangers or the walkers????

  • Try looking up the person-group you want. Like John Fogerty-discography. And then just see which site has all the stuff named.

I dunno off the top of my head. but you're right John Fogerty would cover this well.

  • love the drumming

  • I don't think anyone could argue with the statement that he was one of the original punks :) Love this music, an example of great songwriting and energy overriding the need to get overzealous with ones instrument.

  • my sons 2yrs old n e loves this song

  • Wooo! You can't argue with someone who can make a classic song from 2 chords!

  • beatles learned from Lonie!!!!

  • Absolutely BRILLIANT!!!!!

  • Was offered the lead in "Eraserhead," but refused to cut his hair for the role.

  • the man was a legend

  • On yer, Lonnie - always swung like the clappers!

  • I just recently heard him for the first time with the song rock island line. I had to hear more. I like his voice and they are fun songs.
