@1dducks There isn't any steel on earth that will hold this sharpness for more than a couple cuts. 8CR13MoV is actually a fairly good budget steel. Check out my edge retention test with it, it did pretty well actually. This edge is at roughly 36 degrees inclusive. :)
@jdavis882 HEY! How about good ole ZDP-189? Pelahale did a vid putting I think a very keen, maybe 20 deg inclusive on it. It cut the hair, too, however unknown how long the edge lasted.
Holy smokes! What kind of man hours did that take? Also, I'm no good with a stone, what do you ink about the WickedEdge sharpener for someone in my shoes?
@SirSmok3Alot225 It only takes about 30 minutes to get an edge like this. People spend WAY too much time sharpening.
I think the wicked edge is a great system, but the stones are way too expensive. I prefer the edge pro to the wicked edge. I used an edge pro for a long time before I started free hand sharpening.
@jdavis882 nice thanks for the recommendation..I have a decent stone to work with (but I always like having a backup sharpener for the times that I manage to reverse-sharpen a blade! lol). Do those stones you mentioned earlier, like the diamond and Japanese water, apply to any knife or were those specifically choisen for that knife?
@jdavis882 cool thanks..well I didnt want to make a $100+ investment on free hand stones just yet (at least until I feel more comfortable sharpening) and the Edge Pro was a little steep also, so I got the $40 Smith's Edge DFPK version of guided sharpener. We'll see how it does (it has a 350gr. coarse diamond, 700gr. fine diamond, 600gr. medium arkansas, and 1000gr. fine arkansas). Wish me luck and thanks for the help. Sub'ed
That's exactly the edge you want on a straight razor. With them, usually you draw the hair down onto the razor's edge to see if it separates it -- sometimes referred to as the hanging hair test. Can you feel the difference in the edge? To me, it gets a tacky feeling as the edge easily bites into the skin's surface when testing.
@Chris1992usa Oh yeah you can definitely feel it. Most "sharp" edges seem to skate across my skin. This one feels like it just "falls" into the tissue. It's hard to explain, but yes you can definitely feel the difference.
you gotta do it samurai style: float a flower down a stream and put the blade in front of it, it should slice thru it. hahaha. If it reforms after you are Masamune and thus a god.
Man you are insane with this sharpening thing. urs should be the go to channel on knife sharpening IMO U must have like robot hand eye coordination LOL
That looks like a True Murray Carter style facial shave edge.. i mean.. if it cant do that, its going to hurt like crap shaving your face with it. Very nice edge.
I would love to know if it can still do that after slicing up a bit of cardboard (just out of curiosity) you could let me know in a comment.
@knivesandstuff I will cut with it and report back tomorrow. I doubt it will hold this sharpness for very long, like maybe a few cuts. Kind of makes it seem pointless to take it this far. Haha
@knivesandstuff Just figured you'd like to know. I used 3/4 inch sisal rope to see how long it would hold this sharpness. It took all of 1 slice to lose the tree topping edge, and about 5 to lose the hair whittling edge. It was still damn sharp, but it lost that ridiculous edge super fast.
I remember a long time ago, someone put up a video on a knife on its back. And a hair is put onto the blade, and it would just chop it off with barely any force. You should try that!
how the hell did you achieve that?

How many degree inclusive did you sharpen it at? I'm guessing with that 8cr13mov steel the edge lasted through one box cutting? lol

@1dducks I already did a video showing how sharp ZDP can get. The edge I show is beyond hair whittling. :)
