  • not only its to costly to build but theres no room to build, theres to many business, farmland, and houses in the way, and there too full. Instead of building HSR from Scratch, lets speed up the existing amtrak trains running from oakland to Bakerfield on th Santa Fe tracks up to 110 MPH like Illinois are doing with their amtrak, and maybe amtrak could build more tracks running from bakerfields Santa Fe tracks to L.A.

  • I don't know why they would limit their top speed to 150mph. The average (and most) high speed rails in Europe and so on have a top speed of 186mph (300kph) where it's possible (not in densely populated areas). They're more than well capable up to the task, so why don't they plan to use the most out of it? Why innovate under the average standards?

  • @Nelsa123 That's the current Northeast Corridor you're thinking of on the other side of the country. This new line will reach cruising speeds of 220 mph.

  • @gibb1991 Oh I see, thanks. So over there thats kind of an upgrade for the Acela tracks then. In the business plan video they say it too what you're saying, but I hadn't seen it yet before I wrote my previous comment. Can I ask something: is the CA HSR now a certain fact or is there not a final decision about whether is going to be built? It would be a shame if not. HSR is such a big step forward. In Belgium we've got them too under the company name: Thalys. They're the same as the french ones.

  • @Nelsa123 Yes, I am aware of Thalys, it's a subsidary of SNCF. I'm wondering if they'll split like Eurostar did, though. Anyway, there are plans to upgrade the NEC to 220 mph as well, but nothing is final. The CAHSR is supposedly final and the first section between Fresno and Bakersfield is funded and to be completed by 2015. However, funding poses a the rest of the system questionable. Hopefully, private companies and investors will help once investment opportunities open up.

  • I dont even live in California and I'm in TOTAL support of this system. I just took a trip from my home here in Las Vegas to San Francisco driving. Plane tickets were too expensive, so we took the car. We had planned for an entire week, but we had to cut it short because of the time driving. It was horrible, traffic, long hours, having to drive into the right exits in directions. With this just 1 hour on the planned Maglev and 2 hours on this, and in San Francisco. Sounds like haven.

  • This system is absolutely essential to California's economic growth, which will be coming in large part from cities in the Inland Empire and the Central Valley. Connecting them with San Diego, Los Angeles, San Jose, and San Francisco will create mega-regions that function well and that remain competitive with the rest of the world.

  • @gibb1991 if that is true then i'd be in support for the system. But not just any company can take over it though. They have to be good like the japan rail group is. They run the tokyo metro to which is the busiest metro system in the WORLD. metro and rail is the way to go! it's highly efficent, barely takes up any space and lasts much longer than a car does.

You take that train down then you have to rent a car to get around. It would be real easy to do. I bet there is some rental car lobbying going on...

  • i lived in japan for a while and have gone back many times. i've ridden the shinkansen a lot and i can say it's THE MOST reliable transport system in the world. i think this will work great especially in a crowded state like CA

  • And just a quick follow up. I will acknowledge that Taiwan's HSR, for example, is supposedly like 4000 billion NTD in the red, and needs government bailout. But what public benefit project does not need government aid??? And you can argue that JR of Japan has been operating privately for decades, so what is happening in Taiwan is not the norm, and may not happen to Cali. BTW, 2020, when its complete, I'd probably move to Cali.

  • This would be sick. Hopefully train tickets would cost less than flying and this would be a great way to have a mini weekend vacation. I could leave from OC and be in SF in 2-3 hours. Seriously, it takes me about 2-3 hours to drive from OC to LA due to the bad traffic. That's fucking sick. Linking Nor Cal and So Cal together.

    Whenever this gets complete, I am going to have more vacations in Nor Cal.

    Really 49 mph's would of been your high speed rail? The proposed rail was suppose to connect the entire Midwest with connections to Chicago and the Twin Cities not just simply Ohio. It was suppose to be bigger than just the mere state but whatever, what's done is done. Well Ohio's loss is California's gain. Our high speed rail will move 220 mph so I guess thanks Ohio and Wisconsin as CA thanks you for the funds.

  • @Einsteinbomb The Ohio proposal for high speed rail included a line between Cleveland, Dayton, Columbus, and Cincinnati, and the average speed would have been 49 miles an hour, which is not high speed rail by any stretch. Cleveland to Cincy would have taken 6.5 hours by train, when you can drive it in 4 hours. Boondoggle. Enjoy the funds!

    Yes true, but eventually the idea was to connect the entire Midwest. And well San Francisco to Los Angeles at 220 mph is about 2 1/2 hours while driving is about 6 hours. So, we'll definitely enjoy those funds as 300,00 new jobs arrive. Sounds like a true waste of funds, right?

And it's sad since the Midwest Rail, the Chicago Hub Network would of connected Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota, Indiana, and Michigan. But, now because of three states refusing funds the whole project even for the other guys is put in jeopardy.

  • We in New York State would be happy to take Wisconsin's and Ohio's federal dollars for a high speed rail system in our region we already have the Acela which has cut my time from NYC to DC by 2 hours. I'm really impressed with this development and wish more states would actually be in this frame of mind. Kudos California!!!

  • I support this 100%. I do love to drive. However, if this were in place today, I'd be willing to take trips to San Francisco and even San Diego all the time. I would be able to make it to downtown LA within 25 minutes! If we're going to say that we're the best nation in the world, then why has Europe and Asia had it for the last 30 years now? Even third world countries are putting in plans for high speed rail. We as Californians and Americans need to start creating this for the 21 century.

  • I live in socal. i know that a lot of people in the central valley travel to the bay area and to LA for vacation, to visit family and even to commute to work. The central valley has some of the most polluted air in the country. Californian's do love their cars. I do think that we are growing tired of traveling in a bubble from point a to point b. Personally, I can't wait to see if this comes to fruition and changes the dynamic of how Californians interact.

    When I arrived in Los Angeles from Cuba in 1963 I was ten years old and each summer for the next ten years children like myself would literally CHOKE from the pollutants such as carbon monoxide, and all the rest.....At least 5 different poisons in the air......The people who live in the Los Angeles of today can't even begin to imagine how awful it was to breathe back then......IT WAS BAD !

  • @stealthyeros That problem was solved a long time ago when Japan's high speed rail network was first built. The rail line will be equipped with Positive Train Control. If the Seismic Center detects ground movement strong enough to disrupt traffic, all trains in the vicinity are immediately placed into emergency braking. It's worked pretty well considering there's never been a single fatality on dedicated high speed tracks.

  • Our state is broke no way this happens. Also, this will have no effect on urban traffic congestion, as these trians are designed to go city to city. Can't compare this to Japan, as they have over 100 million people living in an area the size of our state. Also, unlike us, in Japan and most other European countries gas is over 5 dollars a gallon.

  • @danielcaan 65 yeas ago the States was broke and there were no way they could afford build the interstate which would link bunch of State through out this country, they think Interstate 10 and 40 was a joke and we would be stuck with Root 66 but guess what, we have interstate, and we can drive 80 MPH instead of 50 MPH. IF the Interstate has happened I'm shure HSR would happene in America.

  • This technology looks ancient! Inform yourself about Evacuated Transport Tubes, and ET3 "Space travel on Earth". Search for it on YouTube. Compared to ETT, "High Speed Rail" looks slow and wasteful. Seriously, we can do better than this!

  • @repfreedomforce Those would cost subsidies of untold amounts. The airlines already run on $15 billion per year in subsidies in the USA alone. True high speed rail has proven to produce a profit and privatize itself all over the world. There has yet to be a failed, modern true high speed railway system.

  • @allegrosm6 Those were just examples. The actual trains will be selected by the private company who will operate, and someday own, the system. These trains are just virtual models of the existing technology in a rapidly changing industry. In 2020, high speed trains will probably be much more efficiant than they are already and possibly may be able to take certain trackage faster.

  • @A0990Productions This system runs on a dedicated track system that will be set up in a series of two, four, and six track segments, which will allow faster express trains to pass local or regional trains, just like in Europe.

  • @seegee1951 Yes, all trains in the U.S. are already wheelchair accessable. By 2015 all station platforms in the U.S. will be upgraded to allow wheelchair access.

  • I love driving my car, but that feeling of freedom dies during rush hour. Implementing HSR into our transportation infrastructure will alleviate the clogging of our highways.
