  • Wow. You've turned a pop song into a tearjerker.

  • AWE!!!!

  • I just watched it with the sound off and loved it almost more than with it on. I don't remember the song at all but you're so great at showing the emotion and musicality. It's especially fun because I'm trying to learn ASL right now and while watching your videos, I realized I'm starting to recognize many of the signs.

Thanks for all the videos and Please, keep it up! :)

  • Oh my word, you are good : ) I felt myself making faces along with yours. I felt the song. We are teaching my daughter ASL, because she has Down syndrome, and this makes me even more excited about it. Thanks.

  • you should do some teaching online too that would be so cool

  • This is one of those songs that gets played to death and I didn't really like it, but seeing the sign language (therefore the emotion) of the song really brought out the beauty and sorrow for me. Thank you for these videos, they are really enjoyable to watch!

  • will you be my teacher!?!? lol

  • I love what you do. I have always had an infatuation with ASL, but never had the time to learn it. You make songs I don't even like beautiful. Keep up the good work. Do you know what would be a real tough one? "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" by REM.

    Mike:-)))

  • i so love you stephen torrence... hehehehe... brrrrrr

  • I've been looking at a lot of ASL translated songs, and i have to say this Gentleman is the most wonderful I have ever seen. his style is clean, and it is heartfelt. I will favorite this man!

  • Dude, have you considered acting?

  • i noticed i favorited like half of your songs but never subscribed... O.o my bad.

  • I love the way you sign. My ASL teacher does too. You inspire me to continue with ASL.

  • im in love with stephen torrence!!! its amazing what you do! so much passion! i love you!! haha

  • my dad is deaf we we go to a deaf congregation and usually i dont like when people on YouTube who have no connection to the deaf make asl videos on song just because they went to collage, but not you. you get the point that its SIGN LANGUAGE. you have to paint a picture for the deaf ( hence SIGN- like SYMBOLS) not do everything by the book like using a sign for every word

  • you're amazing :)

  • wow i mean just wow i cant even really say to much im speechless ....

  • Beautiful :)

  • i really love this video. it is beautiful

  • you should sign hero of war by rise against!!!:)))

  • I LOVE this! Please do more songs!! Can u do some country songs from Reba?? I am in ASL 1 so I'm not sure what all the sings are but I totally understood what you were signing and it's not because of the song either. I knew the signs. I feel so happy for myself. :)

  • I just fell in love. <3

  • Your hands are beautiful for this song T___T

  • i love these vids i cant stop watching them they are GREAT!!!

  • I seriously can't get enough of watching these; keep performing Stephen. You are amazing at expressing the lyrics and feeling in the song with your signs and movement. We are lucky to be let in on your interpretations.

  • God bless you.

  • This video is perfect - so beautiful <3

  • I'm so thankful that people like you are in this world.

  • BEAUTIFUL! -- I humbly bow to you!

  • Even though I didn't understand all of the words (because I'm just starting to learn) you signed this song with so much emotion that I cried. You are really talented.

  • haha, i think i have that shirt lol

  • you're signing feels more genuine than kelly's singing.

  • Stephen, it would make my life if you could sign Parachute by Ingrid Michaelson. Just saying. <3

  • I have learned all the sign language I know from videos like this. He is my favorite. :) and I just got an interpreting opportunity. I need to learn more. Is it possible for you go go step by step on one video teaching how to sign it?

    P.S. I love you:)

  • @thelifelessteens I'd suggest a book, like maybe "The Joy of Signing".

  • LOVE IT..you did really good!

  • I love this song From Kelly Clarkson. when I watched you perform this in sing language I felt what she was singing through you. its like you were channeling the feeling of the song.

  • I Honestly Can't stop watching this. I feel like hes looking right at me. I adore him.

  • Im Inlove With This Boy. :) <3

  • @ExpressYourself077 that makes two of us! did you see his Fireflies video, that one did it for me.

  • @ExpressYourself077 I agree! thousand times! ^___^

  • never mind... :)

  • can i get the gloss lyrics for what you did? please/

  • It was reported on a Deaf dating site named Deafornot dot c om that 500,000 Deaf individuals in the United States claim American Sign Language (ASL) as their primary language.

  • @deafornot2 Really? I never knew there was a such website? Does it have alot of songs that are signed like this?

  • this is awesome and love this song and you did a great job :)

    Davey

    from New York

  • I LOVE YOU. ur just SOOOO GOOD!!!

  • you're just awesome, love all of your songs, and great ASL teacher.

  • i think i may love you. (:

  • I LOVE the emotion he puts into the "Break-up finish" parts, especially when Kelly starts vocalizing or extends a note! This is a great video!!!

  • You need to be on D-PAN

  • i love deaf boys

  • i went to a funeral that played this song. i wonder if the interpretation would be different if seen from the perspective of death. The person who died had cancer and they knew he would not make it. It would be interesting to see your interpretation.

  • Awesome in every way!!!

  • you are an inspiration for everyone my friends and I are learning sing lenguage because of you, you make us saw how especial is for others know asl and well congratulacions you are really amazing keep going like this =D

  • My mom is an interpreter and she said you're super good at this and that the deaf community will love you! You're too cute! :)

  • So beautiful. There is so much emotion in this video in your signs and in your face! I almost cried while watching this video. All your videos are really great and I absolutely love watching them! Keep making them and I'll keep watching! :)

  • i love your interpretation and facial expression

  • u look better in this vid instead of ur latest vids (ur hair is nicer)

  • im wondering? you like girls song than boys?why?

  • but how do you solve the problem with author's rights? it is very important for us here in russia to understand how deaf people all around the world manage to get rights to use songs for asl performances. cause paiments to music agencies are very high

  • this is just purely awsome

  • yes GymnastO1794 my best friend has a coclear but she can hear as much as it will allow her she dosent really like to listen with the signin but when its on radio she sometimes watches me sign them and that helps but her coclear when im not around is helpful but she depends on the signs and things but she likes to listen to her ipod i touch btu when her battery dies shes pissed lol its the best thing ever

  • Thank you. So much. People like you show the passion that you see in those special people who are so passionate about ASL. You inspire me. I hope you continue to inspire people. Because that's what some people need. Just a pinch of inspiration. Thanks you.

  • awesome! great work!

  • i never new a beautiful song could be more beautiful in sign language.... ^-^

  • Your videos are amazing i'm just starting to really learn to sign but i have two family members who are deaf and i just couldn't wait to share your videos with them. What your doing is amazing! <3

  • he proves that you don't need to talk to have a beautiful voice

  • @culacula14 i agree i mean he is using a bunch of expression so even if the music wasn't there you could tell all of that expression and he is signing from the heart.

  • @culacula14 hes amazing if i was deaf id pay big money to see him live. dammit id pay big money deaf or not!

  • @culacula14 right on.

  • Stephen!!! Awesome THAT! haha its cool you put ASL transliterations!!! I like that thanks man!!!

  • [ To Usual ] He is hearing; but you make an excellent point. In fact one band I used to sing for; we had a deaf drummer. He was AMAZING....when we practiced he used to just hear what my bass player would do. Also he practiced at home with the volume and bass way up...He was truly one of the most amazing drummers I ever knew.

My daughter is Multiply disabled. We use these videos to help her sign. She is hearing as well; but has Apraxia. This man has truly been a HUGE help to us! We LOVE him!!!!

  • he has big hands.....you know what they say about big hands! >;D

  • LOVE it!

  • wow first time i heard this song and when i saw you sign it it made a whole lot more sense to me, absolutely amazing :) 5 starsss

  • I love how clear and expressive your signing is. As an ASL student myself, I find it very easy and fun to watch your videos and learn signs from them. Keep up the good work! c:

  • thanks for sharing this...gorgeous song.

  • I absolutely adore ASL! =]

And you are a pretty darn good signer =]

I am very interested in ASL and I would LOVE to learn how to sign =]

  • You're the best :3 No "playlist demands," just glad you made me lose the hate I got after my stint doing Relay. <3 <3

  • Another beautiful video Stephen.

  • WOW! i've watched just about all of your videos now! ...keep it up! good work! :)

  • im hard of hearing and i speak clearly, but i always wanted to learn sign language. this helped me soo much!!!! :)

  • @luvXmeXlots18 I grew up in an oralism state (Michigan) so I actually didn't learn ASL until last year. I'm so glad that I was able to get interpreters and learn sign language!!!! This video definitely sets a high standard for all of us who use ASL as our first language. ;D JK.

  • you almost perfectly matched the words! ur amazing

  • Can anyone please tell me why ASL never use their lips in their sign language? I'm a almost deaf girl from Norway, and here we are very strict on always using our lips in additions to signs. If it wasn't for i already know the song, i wouldn't have a clue of what he was actually saying..

but beside from that, the movie is good :)

  • @prelga ... in ASL we must use lips. Just one example, the sign for "must, should, need" is the same but is the facial expression and lips what make the difference. Could be some people are more expressive than others, that happens in any language.

    cheers from Canada

  • @wokker From the US, but close to Canada (Michigan!!!). It is true that some cultures are more expressive than others, but that's just a generalization. You don't have to use your lips, but some people do it because majority of people lip-read and read the sign language (I'm generalizing again, but that has just been in my experience another reason is that it feels natural since if you do speak verbally it's almost natural to move your lips even though it's in a silent language)

  • @prelga It depends on what what are and what type of sign language is being used in ASL. Full deaf people usually prefer you to NOT wear your cochlear, hearing aids, or sim-con (speaking while signing) and/or mouth while signing. I grew up in a very Oralist state that was very against sign language; so, for me I take into consideration of who my audience is and proceed from there. So, if its someone who's deaf, but doesn't know ASL I would probably use ASL: ASL. In school I use CASE and lip read

  • Brilliant videos :) I was confused a few times since I am learning Romanian sign language and some words are different :)

    Keep it up :)

  • wow that was amazing!! i loved your facial expressions and everything!! congrats!! your very attractive too! so thats a bonus ^-^

  • Amazing...I think I love you. :D

  • Would someone like to inform the UNinformed? lol - what's the difference between ASL and Signed English? (I didn't know there was such a thing as 'signed english' ...) and what is 'gloss'?

Love this vid, btw - you definitely connect with the music thru the signing:)

  • @rosebloodfaerie ASL is a language with its own grammar and structure - signed english is where you have signs for each english word and they you replace the english. ASL is more comceptual and easier to understand and gets emotions across much better - for example phrases such as "getting on like a house on fire" makes no sense literally so you would sign in ASL something like - friendship - very close. Or whatever. Hence the interpretation on the captions

  • @rosebloodfaerie Oh and gloss - is the concept attached to the sign. So the basic meaning - then how the sign is expressed is also important so if you have the gloss for example "LOVE-ME FINE" depending on your facial expressions this could mean you loved me adequately (more negative face) or as in the song you loved me enough(really well) - with a postive face. I hope this makes sense.

  • @gingerbreadmun thanks! yeah, does make sense now:) now I am informed lol:P

  • your pretty good but theres some signs that wouldve worked better with some words but good job! your videos are amazing =]

  • this is so kool i love these videos

  • Awesome video!

  • DUDE! YOU ARE FRiKiN AMAZiNG! AND GORGEOUS! i LOVE iT!

    <3 Lauren <3

  • It's nice that you do it in ASL and not Signed English, and the gloss is awesome, it reinforces that it's ASL and not Signed English.

  • You did an amazing job. :}

  • look usualjapanesepetname hellooo not all are deaf and they are mostly hard of hearing!! dummy means we can hear a little haha damn people

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hey i really like the song and you sign pretty well i can understand what the song say by watch you i am deaf

  • he's not deaf- he can hear just fine.

  • i love all ur videos and u r the reason i started ASL, I hope u will write back to me. u do a asome job at what u do. the other reason i started learning ASL is because my cousin is deaf and i was never able to comunicate with her and u make it so much fun so i just want to say u r amazing and thank u :)

  • Love all your videos!! I just started making some myself. Please check out my interpretation of "Two is Better Than One" and one I did with my friend to "My Life Would Suck Without You." I'd love your feedback!

  • *gives you cookie and a cupcake* Great job on the videos...Now if you had a song by Jason Mraz, that'd be epic

  • OMG....beautiful... I love you...that's all I have to say....

You do a fantastic job! ♥

  • how about we stop judging people and just enjoy the song and his interpretation of it...?

  • I teach four languages and I tell my students the same: "no matter how the interpreter does a translation, there's always a subjective component in it; we can try to be accurate but the ideas we give to a receptor can have many different ways, as long as the main idea is understood."

For those who think he's "wrong" I have to say: "incorrect" is the proper term you have to use." Don't correct others making mistakes on your statement. Be constructive, post your own version and let's see then.

  • this is really awsome. I have to do an Expressive Final for my ASL 2 class and I ahve to choose a song. I have no idea what im going to do I want to choose a song thats slow paced, have any pointers for me?

  • Comment removed

  • @snowboarder2231 I would suggest "Tracy Chapman's Baby Can I Hold You." It's slow pace but with deep message, emotional and gives you the opportunity to show your facial expressions.

    Good Luck!

  • You did pretty good. I noticed some signs were off I've studied asl for 5 years and working to make it my job.

Where did you learn and are you deaf, HH, hearing, CODP

  • What are your credentials? As someone who has studied the culture and language for 3 years, I find your signing to be totally wrong half the time. Where did you learn?

  • @videogirlYO

why don't you check out his profile and follow up the question to his web/blog? Perhaps it's a different one? Perhaps you folks can figure out how you sign some words specificially?

  • @videogirlYO

Remember, there are different types of sing languages. This is, I believe, ASL. I'm studying it now (haven't been for too long, but I'm alright) and a lot of signs he does are the same as I know.
