I think it is amazing how much Katie's moment of awakening or enlightenment resembles the awakening that Eckhart Tolle describes in his book The Power of Now. Amazing. Both of them are great spiritual teachers now.
Katie herself admits that she was told she's a walk-in, i.e. a soul who exchanges places with another soul inhabiting a body. That would explain her "sudden" awakening. It also means she has access to the memories of the original Katie. I suspect she is a highly evolved soul not originally from Earth. Katie admits she had to "re-learn" how to function. The significance of this is ultimately she has never really been touched by the suffering she refers to as it was not her's in the first place!
