@urabnetwork I'm quite sure that this family would rather let their trusted and well known family pet near their child than many people. Much in the way that certain people would never hurt a puppy, there are dogs who would never hurt a baby. I agree that people need to be responsible, but for all I know this dog has cuddled with hundreds of babies without any sign of agression. That would lead me to call this interaction, under supervision, much safer than many other things.

The pit bull debate is a very difficult issue to resolve. I am a huge animal lover. I would hate to see a ban on these beautiful dogs. But, I also LITERALLY see the bad side in this issue. My neighbors own a dog which is half pit bull. Their dog is extremely vicious. When he gets into our yard I cannot leave the house until he is contained, this happens more than once a week. I really do fear he will attack a child some day. Then again maybe its the way he is being treated. I dont know :/

My friend's neighbor has an aggressive, territorial German Shepherd who goes to the fence and barks, growls, snarls, and lunges if you're so much as IN my friend's backyard. He even lunged at my friend's Golden Retriever. It terrifies me, especially since the fence is only a few inches above the Shep's head. He could jump it if he wanted to.
@RandomGirl119 You are right. Your friend should contact the authorities about that German Shepherd because, yes, it is only a matter of time before it gets into his/her yard. Even responsible people who own dogs don't realize that at one time or another, a dog is going to find a way around a fence or slip out through an open door. The animals are incredible that way. The police will give a firm talk to those neighbors. Hopefully they'll straighten up. Don't wait!

Some of these pit owners either don't recognize this or do not want to accept it. I'd suggest you contact the authorities because clearly this family is unable/unwilling to consider your safety. @TammySparrow Pits and their mixes are popular with bad owners right now, sadly. Your example is typical of events leading up to dog bites regardless of breed: a dangerous dog not controlled by the owner. A dog doesn't necessarily need to be maltreated to become dangerous. They are naturally territorial, especially males, and will defend their territory (this dog believes your yard is his territory). Call animal control on them every time he's out and get photos as proof.
My family has 3 dogs, a pitbull, a wiener dog and a Rottweiler. If someone broke into the house the pit would lick them and direct them to the jewelry but if they make the mistake of waking up the wiener dog they will lose some blood. You want to talk about aggressive dogs then you need to look at chows, German Shepard's, wiener dogs and Chihuahua's.
I just hope that "Sharky" remains your friendly house hold pet and does not end up maiming any of you, if he does, these vids will take on a whole new meaning.

However there are numerous sites, in addition to those I've already listed, that identify pits as having attacked more people over a given time frame than any other breed. That's just a fact. When you factor in the size, strength and abilities of this breed it is clear that they must be altered from their present state in order to be a safer pet for the community.
@4forever1000 I said that a lot of websites that are anti-pit bull say that the "locking jaw" myth is true. There are different sources that have different bite rankings. Some say pit bull, some say German Shepherd, whatever. All I know is, if everyone is to be happy, the problem can't be solved with hatred and genocide. It has been proven that the dogs can be reformed; irresponsible owners and dog fighters need to be dealt with and the breed repaired.
@4forever1000 And dedicatedlurker9 is right. Also, there are breeds with much stronger bite force than a pit bull. Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Mastiffs, and more beat the pit bull in bite force. One thing that scares me is that if we completely ban pit bulls, gangs might switch to the Presa Canario. They haven't yet because Presas are far more prone to aggression and are actually MUCH harder for the owner to handle if allowed to be aggressive, AND they're bigger than the pit bull.

One good point you make though is that there are other potentially dangerous breeds. If the pit bull were to go bye-bye (which I do not advocate) I agree that some other breed would take it's place as the gang dog of choice. One thing I learned is that Rotts are high up on the attack lists too. I am concerned about the safety of kids.
@4forever1000 I can't remember the name of it, but there was a show or special on Discovery Channel where some people measured the bite forces of several different breeds and tried to get the bite force of a particularly large wolf, although the wolf only gave a "warning bite" and not a full-on bite. It was pretty interesting to watch. It seemed the larger and broader the dog's head, the stronger its bite force. Even a slightly bigger skull made a significant difference.

@urabnetwork I'm quite sure that this family would rather let their trusted and well known family pet near their child than many people. Much in the way that certain people would never hurt a puppy, there are dogs who would never hurt a baby. I agree that people need to be responsible, but for all I know this dog has cuddled with hundreds of babies without any sign of agression. That would lead me to call this interaction, under supervision, much safer than many other things.

The pit bull debate is a very difficult issue to resolve. I am a huge animal lover. I would hate to see a ban on these beautiful dogs. But, I also LITERALLY see the bad side in this issue. My neighbors own a dog which is half pit bull. Their dog is extremely vicious. When he gets into our yard I cannot leave the house until he is contained, this happens more than once a week. I really do fear he will attack a child some day. Then again maybe its the way he is being treated. I dont know :/

My friend's neighbor has an aggressive, territorial German Shepherd who goes to the fence and barks, growls, snarls, and lunges if you're so much as IN my friend's backyard. He even lunged at my friend's Golden Retriever. It terrifies me, especially since the fence is only a few inches above the Shep's head. He could jump it if he wanted to.

Your example is typical of events leading up to dog bites regardless of breed: a dangerous dog not controlled by the owner. A dog doesn't necessarily need to be maltreated to become dangerous. They are naturally territorial, especially males, and will defend their territory (this dog believes your yard is his territory). Call animal control on them every time he's out and get photos as proof.

My family has 3 dogs, a pitbull, a wiener dog and a Rottweiler. If someone broke into the house the pit would lick them and direct them to the jewelry but if they make the mistake of waking up the wiener dog they will lose some blood. You want to talk about aggressive dogs then you need to look at chows, German Shepard's, wiener dogs and Chihuahua's.

@GrendalSven Since I engaged in this debate I've learned quite a bit. The stats are even worse than I thought. I amazes me how little attention many folks pay to the facts. I guess if I felt my dog was under verbal attack I'd get defensive too. I wish they could realize though that these attacks are really happening. People are losing their lives. The only way to save this animal is to adjust the breeding protocols. But too many folks want the jaws and big muscles.

@4forever1000 have you ever picked up a book and read up on this? do you have any education as far as canines or are you just coming on here cause you read some stat about dog attacks? your talkin bout facts but leaning one way and completely ignoring the other side. there are lots of owners of kids that kill everyday!! should we change those breeding protocols? understand that it has everything to do with the OWNER. read an informative book and dnt go off ur mixed feelings and emotions.

@foureleven86 I have owned 4 dogs in my lifetime. Facts are the only thing we can rely on friend. I'm sure you have a great dog. I'm not trying to attack your pet. However, the facts are that pit bulls have the weaponry to maim and kill. 59 children in the U.S killed between 2004-2010. Would you want to make an argument like yours to the families of these poor kids? Think about that. What I'm proposing might actually save the breed. As is, more cities are banning them.

Show me these stats please. Then show me the stats also of other breeds. That includes any dog that bit someone in a vet setting, groomer, dog walker, dog hotel, at home, at the dog park, at dog friendly stores, at dog friendly work environments, ect. Then, after you've actually studied the facts; turn your TV off and stop listening to media.

@lolfuxyeah For statistics search these sites: "The truth about pit bulls: The Nanny Dog myth revealed" or "dog bite law" or "dogbites.org." Try those for starters. I can give you more if you need them. I suspect you want to argue that every breed has bitten someone at one time or another and if so, we should ban all dogs. Sorry. The logic is no good. Pit bulls are at the top of attack stats and more importantly, their attacks lead to serious injury and death.

A lot of the places I've looked that call pit bulls "the most dangerous" seem like they're established JUST to give pit bulls a bad rap, often saying myths like "locking jaw" are true.

@RandomGirl119 I don't think I ever referred to a so-called locking jaw on the dog. However there are numerous sites, in addition to those I've already listed, that identify pits as having attacked more people over a given time frame than any other breed. That's just a fact. When you factor in the size, strength and abilities of this breed it is clear that they must be altered from their present state in order to be a safer pet for the community.

@4forever1000 I said that a lot of websites that are anti-pit bull say that the "locking jaw" myth is true. There are different sources that have different bite rankings. Some say pit bull, some say German Shepherd, whatever. All I know is, if everyone is to be happy, the problem can't be solved with hatred and genocide. It has been proven that the dogs can be reformed; irresponsible owners and dog fighters need to be dealt with and the breed repaired.

@4forever1000 And dedicatedlurker9 is right. Also, there are breeds with much stronger bite force than a pit bull. Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Mastiffs, and more beat the pit bull in bite force. One thing that scares me is that if we completely ban pit bulls, gangs might switch to the Presa Canario. They haven't yet because Presas are far more prone to aggression and are actually MUCH harder for the owner to handle if allowed to be aggressive, AND they're bigger than the pit bull.

@RandomGirl119 I doubt that your comparison of bite forces among breeds is correct, although I'm willing to look at your source. Please list. One good point you make though is that there are other potentially dangerous breeds. If the pit bull were to go bye-bye (which I do not advocate) I agree that some other breed would take it's place as the gang dog of choice. One thing I learned is that Rotts are high up on the attack lists too. I am concerned about the safety of kids.

@4forever1000 I can't remember the name of it, but there was a show or special on Discovery Channel where some people measured the bite forces of several different breeds and tried to get the bite force of a particularly large wolf, although the wolf only gave a "warning bite" and not a full-on bite. It was pretty interesting to watch. It seemed the larger and broader the dog's head, the stronger its bite force. Even a slightly bigger skull made a significant difference.

This website only shows the top dogs who are likely to bite; I want the website that says How Many Douchebags a year who shouldn't own a dog, get a intimidating one for looks, and then hit them cause they think that's training. @lolfuxyeah I assumed that your argument would be that if we ban one breed that bites, then all that bite must be banned. I was incorrect. You never said that. As a trainer though, I am sure you would rather take a bite from a Pomeranian than from a Pit Bull, right? You are also right about owners influences on the animal. But numbers are numbers. 59 kids killed between 2004-10. That has to be our priority. Don't you think that engineering the breed is it's best hope to survive?

@4forever1000 Well of course I'd rather have the Pom bite me. That little dog can still take off an appendage; regardless I am not down for regulation. I'd rather be in a car crash than a motorcycle crash; should we ban motorcycles/modify them to have tops? I mean there is carelessness among humanity regardless of the subject. Kids are going to die all the time. The thing that needs to be engineered is the human; through awareness.

@lolfuxyeah The motorcycle comparison is a bad one. Generally, it is the person riding the motorcycle who faces the danger. They make the choice for themselves. A child/person walking outside does not make the choice to confront a pit bull. Your statement that kids are going to die all the time is callous. We all know that. What we are trying to protect them from here is one form of brutal, unnecessary death. Your privilege to own a specific breed does not trump a person's safety.

I used to raise them, I've had 6 of them, we used to use them to hunt wild boar! Why? Cause they are the only animal crazy-stupid and bloodthirsty enough to run into a set of 3 inch gnashing tusks!
