@Kratzbuerstenvisage the concept of being allowed to drive as fast as u want seems almost unreal to us, because our law enforcement/ governments/ insurance lobby in N america are so hung up on speed being the reason for car accidents. Which is why they go crazy enforcing our speed limits.
@bernietheeyeguy We, in general, lack the training for high speed driving, so for us it's not a good idea. We have no training requirement to get a license & the test is too easy. Of course, if you lived in Germany or anywhere that has a real driving test etc, then you are OK to drive fast, regardless of what country you're from Most of us Americans can't even drive stick, let alone be safe at high speed. You might, like me be 1 of the exceptions. I have a U.K. a German and a U.S. license.
@bernietheeyeguy Man, you need to see how brazilian roads are. Only few of them are in good conditions, and even in the good roads you can`t pass 110 km/h. Well, the cars here aren`t very safe, so it would be dangerous to speed them up. I can`t wait to travel to Germany...
@RocknLester2011 thought about that a lot. First of all, you're extremely aware and alert, while driving that fast, so hopefully you'd notice the deer as it emerges from the woods with enough time to scrub off some speed. Maybe the thing to do is just to stand on the brakes, trust the ABS to keep you straight, and just hit the critter. On the other hand, maybe swerving to avoid it is better. What do the driving instructors in Germany teach?
@bernietheeyeguy I drive 50 -70 thousand km per years in Germany and I have NEVER seen a fucking deer on the Autobahn ,the things that go through your Canadian minds is a fucking mistery to me ??yes it happens ,deer wild pigs even horses ,but if you think like you do you would never leave home,by the way you should move to the right more often ,and when, if you ever can get to 300 the lines in the middle become one ;) that is nice
@zghvbn1 Yeah, buddy, that's why i sit in a rubber room all day and just babble and stare at the walls, waiting for a hero like you to lead me to a meaningful life.
@RocknLester2011 I have never heard of that happening in Germany, at least not where I lived in Niedersachsen. I lived in Germany for 8 years. I hear of it all the time over here (USA) I lived in England for a long time too and I've heard of it happening once there, to a friend of mine.
2:47 you said someone is behind you, why didn't you move to the right lane? Your 4 Zylinder E Class Coupe is not very fast! Take a E Brabus or E63 hahahaha :D That would be fast
@Tommynatorium i was waiting to pass the car in front of me. As soon as i passed the other cars, he didnt keep up with me. Had he still been there i would have definitely let him pass.
@Tommynatorium renting a seriously fast car is very expensive. An e class benz/5series beemer or even an s class/7 series for a few days is reasonably priced from sixt or europcar.
I drive 35-40 thousand kilometers of autobahn per year and just from the looks you are an experienced and polite driver. At 190kmh+ germans tend to put way more pressure on the cars in front, expecting/demanding them to get out of the way (which normally is the case). I laughed at the typical netherlander not using his mirrors enough, but you saw it coming. Respect ;)
Also I agree to bhigr, the best travelling speed is 150-160kmh. Still hurts the wallet though :((
@rahgahnah There's no end to the things people don't know. They don't know stopping distances, safe following distances, why it is dangerous to pass on the right and and and. You can tell you're not in the US because the people in front move over to let you pass. This would offend the bravado of the average American male who would immediately gun it as to not look like a pussy.
@bernietheeyeguy 0:51: Often German automobiles are referred to as the best engineered road cars in the world. As a manufacturer you can only test this much, so the knowledge from hundreds of thousands of cars is quite valuable. And when most of these cars regularly operate at high speeds you're bound to gather more experience.
Also the car lobby is really powerful in Germany (probably the best explanation), so we probably won't see speed limits soon.
@bonham1981 without a doubt, Germany was tops in automobile engineering for quite some time. I agree though, that the speed unlimited autobahns force the german car manufacturers to make cars stable at high speeds-ie better quality. The car lobby is one thing, but the Green lobby is another. My guess is that you have speed limits within 5 years.
@147hannes I went through a discussion with Fincut81 on that subject. It explains my point of view, which basically is that I was passing other cars within the acceptable 20-30 second time span per car passed.

@golf1diesel actually i'm canadian, which you would have noticed if u paid attention to the video and stopped thinking about sex ;-) You're right though, driving does seem different now. @bernietheeyeguy haha yeah right! I'm german, went to Vancouver a few months (holiday), was nice there, then was in California - many differences! I can comprehend the comments my german colleagues posted, we took our rule "drive right" very seriously - as all rules ;-) ... its a bit annoying if you want to pass a car in front of you which not want to leave the left lane...but I must admit, if there is no car behind me which is faster, I stay on the left, too...:D
@bernietheeyeguy im sry if you understood my comment as a remark about your driving skills I did not intend. but you said that you heard its an outlet for german guys to blow of steam and i just wanted to make clear that the autobahn exists exclusively to get fast to another place. There is statistical evidence that the lack of speed limit on some routes do not lead to more traffic dead and thats because we get intense training to prepare the drive on the autobahn.
@TheHazeGuy the bit about blowing off steam was just a joke. I fully agree that it makes sense to have limitless autobahns. When we drive faster, we drive better because we have to. After all, we don't want to die. I wish we didn't have speed limits on our freeways here in Canada. As far as the training goes, i'm not sure it helps that much. A study a few years ago at U of Toronto showed that driver training was not proportional to fewer accidents/deaths. More studies on the subject are needed.
Regarding "autobahn tourists" (like us). Autobahn driving doesn't appeal to most tourists. But it does appeal to car enthusiasts. Guys like us visit the automobile museums and assembly plants out of interest. We also often belong to car clubs, and have voluntarily taken advanced driving courses including high speed driving and skid control. Some of us have raced. We have no interest in shopping malls, zoos, or disneyland. But i promise you, we know how to drive.
remember always to use the right lane, left lane is normally only for overtaking.. especially if there is an open road and nobody in front then go on the right lane... i remember when i went 260 on the right lane and someone else used the left lane to overtake me with about 280+ in a nice M5 :P i also got a video of me and my dad driving on the autobahn on our way to austria which i made cause we were bored and you clearly see how we and everyone else always go right if theres enough space..
what nobody knows in germany is a speed suggestion of 130km/h(richtgeschwindigkeit) every crash over that speed , the accident insurance will have a real close look. that means, if there is a crash that could had been avoidet at 130 or below that speed, the driver is to be held partially at fault
Fuck Canada with speed limit for shit cars and trucks that can't go beyond 120. And that is the reason they sell performance cars for such low prices in Canada/USA compare to Europe hahaha I guess you gain some by losing some.
next time try any Autobahn in the ruhrgebiet or A3 or A5 or A7 and see "what it's like" I'm sure you'll love all the cars changing lanes, trucks doing elephant race (blocking left lanes) and finally you'll stop putting German Autobahn on a pedestal.
@bernietheeyeguy Sir, at 2:20 its spelled wrong. Its Schweinehund, not schweinhund. ;) Good to see the World likes the german autobahns :)
Btw you should maybe try the Schwarzwald (Black Forest) which has great roads with no cops and awesome corner combos, its so awesome. I live there. If you want you can try out the handling abilitys of your E-Class.
@AtzengamerMemphis "its" should be spelled "it's." And "abilitys" should be "abilities." No problem though. Life is too short to worry about spelling mistakes, especially when it's not your first language. But here's some free advice: correcting people, even if you are right, doesn't win you many friends. You're better off to nod and smile! Greetings from Toronto
@AtzengamerMemphis after reading my reply again, I admit it was a bit harsh. Sorry if i offended you. BTW i have been through the black forest, which in my mind has some of the prettiest scenery on the planet. Loved the Muenstertal.
@bernietheeyeguy I don't see where there was a need to turn defensively hostile on that guy... anyways greetings from Ottawa, I will hopefully be able to drive parts of the Autobahn someday too! :D
@DK99824 guess i got carried away in "constructive criticism" mode. My bad. But u better hurry to the autobahn! .... there are rumblings of speed limits on the horizon :-(
its so nice how the Europeans move out of the way for you. In Canada, people just see you coming fast so they slow down in front of you...thus pissing you off...or creating an accident...
@showtek1001 very true. I say the biggest difference is that in europe in general, drivers use their mirrors more, and remain mentally more engaged than their north american counterparts. Interestingly, having a drink in the car --even water--is frowned upon. As in, "Venn you drive, you vill drive viss both hands!!" I rented an S-class Benz in Germany a couple of yrs ago. Despite having every other conceivable luxury, it didn't have a cup-holder. No doubt, the way god intended!
@showtek1001 they don´t really "move out of the way for you". We have a right-lane-law (Rechtsfahrgebot). In Germany you have to drive on the right lane, if you can.
@1963concorde I think I was born in the wrong country cause I always drive 20+ above the speed limit when it safe and I can(as long as there is no police around, its only illegal if you get caught). I see waht you mean, I live in California and here you either have the drivers whos a pussy and drives so slow you can get out of the car and run faster then them or you get the fast guys who are rude and dont even touch their turn signals and just hope in a and out of lanes.
No offense to you personally, but Autobahn tourists are just bad idea. They have no experience driving that fast, and Germans are more skillful drivers since it's so hard to get a license. The most dangerous is getting off the autobahn, since your sense of speed is distorted. How do we suppose Germans feel, spending months and thousands of euros getting a license, and tourists that got their license in a day can just blaze through the autobahn.
@wwppk Do you base that opinion on facts, or do you just assume that tourists can't drive? A group of us has been autobahn-tripping for 6 years in a row without so much as a single dent on any of our cars. No offense to you personally, but when you make a statement, try backing it up with something like statistics or expert opinion (not yours).
The problem is that Autobahn tourists think they need to do and can safely do high speeds the first time they are on the Autobahn. I personally had to gain 6000km of experience doing 180 kph before my father let me do more than 200. If you are unexperienced, you just don't know what the car feels like and how it reacts to braking and turning at speeds beyond 200 kph... And I'm just talking about a general danger, not about you personally. Many germans are bad drivers as well.
@bernietheeyeguy count it as the typical german presumption. there are of course all types of drivers on german roads, no much difference to other countries.
@wwppk But thats the thing, Germany has the only no-speed limit highway in the world, of coarse tourists are gonna come. BTW you make it seem like only germans who got their license there are qualified to drive the Autobahn, like they are born natural racecar drivers, but i've had my license for a few years now and worked hard to make sure I get it. However I do understand your view and yes im sure idiots who cant drive are gonna try it.
@wwppk also i saw a lot of people who are not germans which are not civilized in driving ,meaning no signals no right lane use...very slow reflexes no mirror check...
@Fincut81 looking at the video again, maybe there were a couple of times when i could have moved over, but I say it's debatable-- mostly there were cars up ahead about to be passed, so it would have meant redundant lane changes considering that nobody was behind me. Rest assured--I always use my mirrors.
@Fincut81 there's no disrespect. I like Germans and Germany. The only thing that's debatable on the subject is when you're passing a line of cars, how close does the next car up ahead need to be to simply stay in the left lane instead of weaving in and out after passing each car? in the video, in most cases there was a car up ahead in the right lane that i was closing in on. But i agree in a couple of instances I should have moved over. Not sure why i didn't because i usually do.
@Fincut81 Well if that is the rule, if u watch the video again, you'll see after passing the A4 it was 18 seconds, after passing the car with the trailer, 26 seconds--i'd say that's not unreasonable! So what's all the fuss about?
@bernietheeyeguy When someone is behind you and the gap on the right is not big enough for you to move in this gap without heavy breaking stay left, even if the car behind you could go faster than you. If the gap is big enough for you to move right with just stop pushing on the accelaration, move right.
If you go right every time you see a small gap driving becomes very stressful, for you and the others around you.
@samussamus1 my fastest is 250 kph which is around 156 mph. It was in an S350 Benz 3 yrs ago. For me, the only stretches that seem safe enough for that are the ones with good visibility--ie flat and straight with few trees. A terrific autobahn for high speed runs is the A20 which runs from Lubeck eastward.
It's nice to see what it's like to drive fast. Even my 1 litre economy Nissan Micra is kept 'tethered' when it comes to everyday speed limits and safe driving, though it does get a workout as speeds approach 90mph on fast motorway sections (everybody's speeding!!)
Not a lot of people know this, but Germany isn't the only place with no speed limit roads. Montana in the USA has no speed limit on its freeways and once you are outside of Douglas and the small towns on the Isle of Man, there is also no speed limit. No speed limit on 30 foot wide country roads (not freeways). Ob the Isle of man you will see a round white sign with a black diagonal line through it. That means no speed limit in the I.O.M
@ReCre8PS3 gee guys, sorry to to wimp out by only doing 235. Recre8 your dad's 320 does 250 easily? Dream on, unless it's been modified or descending a cliff. And an A6 is governed at 250, so i think it's something in the water. See your doctor. And Hondaryder: youre more man than i am. Careful though, those state troopers are packing heat.
Nice video Bernie. It's awesome hey... I lived there a few years ago and miss it so much. My best time over there was about 1100km in 6 hours, including toilet breaks, food, fuel, everything. Foot mashed into the floor the whole way. Same trip would take a solid 13-14 hours over here in AUS.
@greenhound87 bet you guzzled a lot of fuel driving that fast but that's insane ha ha. You'd need continuous not too busy autobahn with very few roundabouts.
@TimpBizkit Not really many roundabouts in germany. The only ones I remember were at entrances to shopping centres etc. Anyway yeah, you need fairly light traffic to cruise at that speed... Like the traffic in the video.
Apparently not as dangerous as it seems. Fatality stats are similar to N america's. I suspect the offsetting factor is that u pay more attention. At 220 you likely wouldn't text someone or play with the stereo.
@bernietheeyeguy The difference is our driving licence here. It costs about 2000$, you have to work for at least 3 months with special edjucation for the freeway and its offered only to people older than 18. Not like paying 15 bucks as an 16yo ;) And in fact, driving 250 kmh is nothing a german would ever do a video about, ive been watching Autobahn videos on YT for about half an hour now with tourists freaking out by hitting 150... You really have to rethink your laws back there dear ;)
ive done 230 in Michigan. Just need to do it where no one lives, like the UP.

@1963concorde what's the speed limit in Hungary?
bernietheeyeguy 1 month ago
@IceIceToktok so your forced to stay on the right lane unless you have to pass someone?
showtek1001 2 months ago
remember always to use the right lane, left lane is normally only for overtaking.. especially if there is an open road and nobody in front then go on the right lane... i remember when i went 260 on the right lane and someone else used the left lane to overtake me with about 280+ in a nice M5 :P i also got a video of me and my dad driving on the autobahn on our way to austria which i made cause we were bored and you clearly see how we and everyone else always go right if theres enough space..

what nobody knows in germany is a speed suggestion of 130km/h(richtgeschwindigkeit) every crash over that speed , the accident insurance will have a real close look. that means, if there is a crash that could had been avoidet at 130 or below that speed, the driver is to be held partially at fault
DummkopfRadar 2 months ago
Fuck Canada with speed limit for shit cars and trucks that can't go beyond 120. And that is the reason they sell performance cars for such low prices in Canada/USA compare to Europe hahaha I guess you gain some by losing some.
pianoworm 2 months ago
next time try any Autobahn in the ruhrgebiet or A3 or A5 or A7 and see "what it's like" I'm sure you'll love all the cars changing lanes, trucks doing elephant race (blocking left lanes) and finally you'll stop putting German Autobahn on a pedestal.

@szt1964 I didn't say it was perfect. But try the A20 east from Lübeck. The smile on your face will last for days!

Greetings from Southwest Germany.
AtzengamerMemphis 2 months ago
@AtzengamerMemphis "its" should be spelled "it's." And "abilitys" should be "abilities." No problem though. Life is too short to worry about spelling mistakes, especially when it's not your first language. But here's some free advice: correcting people, even if you are right, doesn't win you many friends. You're better off to nod and smile! Greetings from Toronto

@AtzengamerMemphis after reading my reply again, I admit it was a bit harsh. Sorry if i offended you. BTW i have been through the black forest, which in my mind has some of the prettiest scenery on the planet. Loved the Muenstertal.

its so nice how the Europeans move out of the way for you. In Canada, people just see you coming fast so they slow down in front of you...thus pissing you off...or creating an accident...
showtek1001 2 months ago 16

I see waht you mean, I live in California and here you either have the drivers whos a pussy and drives so slow you can get out of the car and run faster then them or you get the fast guys who are rude and dont even touch their turn signals and just hope in a and out of lanes.

i Love you Germany
jimmyrx8 2 months ago
No offense to you personally, but Autobahn tourists are just bad idea. They have no experience driving that fast, and Germans are more skillful drivers since it's so hard to get a license. The most dangerous is getting off the autobahn, since your sense of speed is distorted. How do we suppose Germans feel, spending months and thousands of euros getting a license, and tourists that got their license in a day can just blaze through the autobahn.
wwppk 2 months ago 34
@wwppk Do you base that opinion on facts, or do you just assume that tourists can't drive? A group of us has been autobahn-tripping for 6 years in a row without so much as a single dent on any of our cars. No offense to you personally, but when you make a statement, try backing it up with something like statistics or expert opinion (not yours).
bernietheeyeguy 2 months ago 2
@bernietheeyeguy
Many germans are bad drivers as well.
storm9311 2 months ago
@bernietheeyeguy count it as the typical german presumption. there are of course all types of drivers on german roads, no much difference to other countries.
flurx01 2 months ago
@wwppk But thats the thing, Germany has the only no-speed limit highway in the world, of coarse tourists are gonna come. BTW you make it seem like only germans who got their license there are qualified to drive the Autobahn, like they are born natural racecar drivers, but i've had my license for a few years now and worked hard to make sure I get it. However I do understand your view and yes im sure idiots who cant drive are gonna try it.
davesanti 2 months ago

Hi Bernie, please use the right lane if possible.
Fincut81 3 months ago 3
@Fincut81 looking at the video again, maybe there were a couple of times when i could have moved over, but I say it's debatable-- mostly there were cars up ahead about to be passed, so it would have meant redundant lane changes considering that nobody was behind me. Rest assured--I always use my mirrors.
bernietheeyeguy 3 months ago
@bernietheeyeguy doesn't matter if their is no one behind you rechtsfahrgebot means ALWAYS drive right unless overtaking.

Our laws are NOT "debatable", bernie! Respect us!
Fincut81 2 months ago
@Fincut81 there's no disrespect. I like Germans and Germany. The only thing that's debatable on the subject is when you're passing a line of cars, how close does the next car up ahead need to be to simply stay in the left lane instead of weaving in and out after passing each car? in the video, in most cases there was a car up ahead in the right lane that i was closing in on. But i agree in a couple of instances I should have moved over. Not sure why i didn't because i usually do.

@bernietheeyeguy
Hi Bernie, thats quiet easy:
If you can use the right lane for aprox 30 seconds, switch over. If there is no speed limit on the section, reduce the minimum to 20 seconds.
Greetings.
Fincut81 1 month ago
@Fincut81 Well if that is the rule, if u watch the video again, you'll see after passing the A4 it was 18 seconds, after passing the car with the trailer, 26 seconds--i'd say that's not unreasonable! So what's all the fuss about?

bernietheeyeguy 1 month ago
@bernietheeyeguy When someone is behind you and the gap on the right is not big enough for you to move in this gap without heavy breaking stay left, even if the car behind you could go faster than you. If the gap is big enough for you to move right with just stop pushing on the accelaration, move right.
If you go right every time you see a small gap driving becomes very stressful, for you and the others around you.

Whats your top speed in mph ?
Cheers!
samussamus1 4 months ago

Nice video Bernie. It's awesome hey... I lived there a few years ago and miss it so much. My best time over there was about 1100km in 6 hours, including toilet breaks, food, fuel, everything. Foot mashed into the floor the whole way. Same trip would take a solid 13-14 hours over here in AUS.
greenhound87 6 months ago
@greenhound87 bet you guzzled a lot of fuel driving that fast but that's insane ha ha. You'd need continuous not too busy autobahn with very few roundabouts.

@TimpBizkit WTF?... Roundabouts on the Autobahn??? Not really that fast though, we had a M3 scream past...
greenhound87 4 months ago
@greenhound87 I've never been to germany, but wondered whether there were any roundabouts, not on the autobahn itself but after an exit ramp
TimpBizkit 4 months ago
@TimpBizkit Not really many roundabouts in germany. The only ones I remember were at entrances to shopping centres etc. Anyway yeah, you need fairly light traffic to cruise at that speed... Like the traffic in the video.

Apparently not as dangerous as it seems. Fatality stats are similar to N america's. I suspect the offsetting factor is that u pay more attention. At 220 you likely wouldn't text someone or play with the stereo.
bernietheeyeguy 9 months ago 2
@bernietheeyeguy The difference is our driving licence here. It costs about 2000$, you have to work for at least 3 months with special edjucation for the freeway and its offered only to people older than 18. Not like paying 15 bucks as an 16yo ;) And in fact, driving 250 kmh is nothing a german would ever do a video about, ive been watching Autobahn videos on YT for about half an hour now with tourists freaking out by hitting 150... You really have to rethink your laws back there dear ;)
